BLITZKRIEG "Theatre of the Damned" - Armageddon Music 9/10

For years I’ve been waiting for a new decent heavy metal album and finally I’ve found it , and for those of you who still love the good old classic heavy metal (specially British heavy metal “NWOBHM”) with clean vocals –such as myself- this is the album for you , this must be one of 2007’s best albums . Unlike most 80’s bands, Blitzkrieg are still offering fresh and modern tunes but without losing their 80s sound.
This is a very tight and well composed album with some of the catchiest riffs, very aggressive and powerful tunes, very technical guitar playing and a very good vocalist who can hit both high and low notes perfectly , it’s very obvious that those guys have been doing this for a long time and they know exactly what to do and when to do it, the music just flows naturally throughout the whole album .
The album sounds like a heavier and more complex Judas priest , sometimes you get the “iced earth” vibe in songs like “into the light” , there’s also the occasional power metal influenced songs like “spirit of the legend” , but all in all , all 12 tracks are perfectly done , not a dull moment when your listening to this album , my favorite track would have to be the title track “theater of the damned” . the only down side of the album would have to be the production , it could’ve been better , however I still think that this album is a must have for any heavy metal fan out there

BLITZKRIEG "Theatre of the Damned" - Armageddon Music 8/10

It is fair to say that Sins And Greed, Blitzkrieg’s last offering, was a disappointment after the excellent heavy display the British Metal legends showcased on Absolute Power, which had functioned as somewhat of a comeback for the band in the new millennium. A couple of spins of the new album, and the happy report is that Theatre Of The Damned puts Blitzkrieg back on the right track -- thank you! The patented Blitzkrieg heaviness that was strangely watered-down on Sins And Greed is once again allowed to muster, and the listener is immediately transformed to the cozy factors that are typical of this band’s style, and the sound that despite of being steamed in tried and tested formulas, is really unique and better off unmolested.

Then you have the voice of Brian Ross … well, it wouldn’t be ´kin Blitzkrieg without him, would it? ”The Phantom” further ties in an Iron Maiden connection of sorts in terms of lyrical dealings (both bands have touched upon the old Prisoner TV series in the past as well). Ross pulls off what could be described as a ghost-like voice in one of the album’s more memorable choruses of said track. By another token, how many Metal singers could also manage to sing lines like ”My love for you will never end, I love you more each day” and ”It makes me feel so happy to know that you are mine” and still come off as truly sincere? It’s this combination of sensitivity as well as the role of Metal machoness that makes Ross such a powerful front man. His attitude really comes off as authentic as does the music of his band.

Speaking of the band, their talent should of course be mentioned; this may be Blitzkrieg’s strongest line-up to date, which the upfront production job of Saxon’s Biff Byford demonstrates to perfect effect. The guitar playing of Ken Johnson and Guy Laverick is particularly impressive; their trade-off work is splendid throughout and serves as a school of exercise in how to play utterly authentic Metal guitar with flashy, yet song-complementary leads. At times very melodic, as in the short instrumental ”The Passing,” or more technical as fast-paced ”Spirit Of The Legend” demonstrates. Perhaps they should produce an instructional video consisting of riffs and solos based off of Blitzkrieg’s songs.

Back to the new CD ... apart from the ten main tracks featured, fans are treated with extras such as mpeg’s of the band’s performance at last year's Sweden Rock Festival. Also featured are new versions of classic songs ”Armageddon” and ”Blitzkrieg.” Hardly necessary, these bonus tracks should be viewed as nice perks and nothing else, as this band writes just as good of stuff in the present. Then again, Blitzkrieg, as well as Diamond Head, would sadly probably not have gotten even half the recognition they've received if it wasn’t for the hugely successful Metallica covering their material. That aside, another strong release from Blitzkrieg, Theatre Of The Damned once more shows why this band should have been up there with some of the bigger names that belonged to the same era, had there been more justice in this world. At least their work is there for all to still discover and enjoy, and hopefully the band will keep churning out albums of this nature for considerably further years down the line.

Bio

Blitzkrieg was formed in Leicester in October 1980. Their first demo, made in November that year, secured them their first recording deal with Neat Records resulting in the famous Blitzkrieg/Buried Alive single & a track on the Lead Weight compilation album. The band gigged extensively in England but split in 1981. The members went their own separate ways but Brian Ross & Mick Moore stayed together to form the heart of Avenger. The band released 2 singles on Neat: Ross then left to join Satan with whom he recorded the classic Caught In The Act album which was released by Roadrunner & licensed to Neat for the UK. After the success of the Satan album & European tours, the band’s direction became unclear & Ross decided to leave & concentrate on managing the North East band Lone Wolf (Brian performed vocals on the single Your Move). Now Ross decided that it was time to record the Blitzkrieg LP that had been planned on their single, Your Move. Now Ross decided that it was time to record the Blitzkrieg LP that had been planned way back in 1981, entitled A Time Of Changes: it was released in 1985 on Neat/Roadrunner with recruits from the previous bands brought in to record the album. Meanwhile, Metallica covered the song Blitzkrieg on their Creeping Death EP. In 1991 the band made a mini album called Ten Years Of Blitzkrieg for Roadrunner to celebrate their tenth anniversary, re-recording the Blitzkrieg /Buried Alive tracks together with 3 new numbers. In 1995 Neat Records re-emerged with a vengeance & immediately signed Blitzkrieg to a new 3 album deal: Unholy Trinity, Ten & The Mists Of Avalon were the result (also released in Japan on Pony Canyon Records). Another boost from Metallica came when the USA rockers again covered the Blitzkrieg track on their Live Shit box set & their 1998 album Garage Inc. 2002 saw the release of their new album Absolute Power on Edgy Records (a spin off label of Neat Records’ boss Jess Cox) to rave reviews worldwide. A spate of interviews in Europe, the UK & the USA followed with a string of festival dates in Europe (& the US) which helped push the band back into the spotlight once more. Absolute Power was released in Brazil on Hellion Records & as an LP in Sweden by TPL Records. Following the release of their double Anthology CD on Sanctuary Records the band released their first live album on Metal Nation Records (again owned by Jess Cox). Following the release of Absolutely live, the band went on to record the critically acclaimed “Sins and Greed” which was released in mid 2005. This was also the subject of a Limited edition double gatefold release by TPL records in Sweden and in Brazil. The band has been gigging extensively throughout 2005 and 2006 touring with both Saxon and Doro in the UK as well as several European festivals. Live dates are being scheduled in Europe
