What -A-Melon Festival Events - June 28, 2010
Submitted by Joanne Martin

The heat is on for the 21st annual East Texas What-A-Melon Festival now just a few short weeks away on July 8-10.

First up on this year’s festival events will be the pre-festival concert Tuesday, July 6, at the Windham Civic Center when the George Strait tribute band “Blue Clear Sky” will perform the hits from the King of Country. The concert is sure to be a hit with all ages as the group uses its harmonious vocals and seven-piece band to create a performance that is faithful to the originals. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the concert begins at 7 p.m. Tickets are now on sale at most banks in Center, Brookshire Bros. Grocery in Center, KQBB radio station and The Light and Champion newspaper. Children under six are free and tickets for groups of 10 or more receive a discount.

Also, everyone will want to get the new What-A-Melon Festival tee shirt featuring the new logo designed by local resident Misty Wilburn. What-A-Melon tee shirts are available for sale at the Shelby County Chamber of Commerce, The Balcony and all the banks in Center.

Food and craft vendors, and a big carnival will open Thursday evening, July 8, and the highlight of the evening, the What-A-Melon Festival Gospel Night featuring the areas most talented gospel singers and groups will perform at the Big Tent on the downtown Center square.

Opening ceremonies for the 21st What-A-Melon Festival will be held Friday morning at the Big Tent and all participants in the Largest Watermelon Contest and all festival-goers are invited to attend the ceremony.

The What-A-Pet Show will be held Friday night, July 9 at 7 p.m., under the Big Tent. If you think your pet has talent or is just too cute for words, then you need to bring it to the Pet Show. Entry in the Pet Show is free and registration begins at 6:30 p.m. at the Big Tent. All pets will receive an award, and plaques and cash prizes will be awarded to the top winners in each of the pet show categories. Categories include large or medium breed dog, small or toy breed dog, cat, and miscellaneous. All pets will need to be on a leash, cage or box until contest time. This is a fun event for the kids and the kids at heart to show off their favorite pet.
On Saturday there will be several activities and contests including the traditional favorites, the What-A-Melon Seed Spittin’ Contest and the Biggest Bite Contest. All ages can participate and the contests are free to enter. Cash prizes are awarded to the winners.
Next, everyone will want to get a seat at the Big Tent as the “biggest” contest around begins - the 21st annual Largest What-A-Melon Contest.

Watch as the big melons are unloaded at the Big Tent and the anticipation grows as large as the watermelons themselves to see the overgrown gourds weighed-in to find out who will be the champion of the 2010 Largest What-A-Melon Contest.

And as sweet as the watermelon is, there is no comparison to the festival’s sweetest event, the East Texas What-A-Melon Festival Queen’s Pageant. Shelby County shines with its young pageant contestants that will perform at the Big Tent with a talent and style show.

What-A-Melon Festival entry buttons will be on sale at the Blue Clear Sky concert. The festival is sponsored by the Center Rotary Club.

Discography

Blue Clear Sky is a tribute band, a form of cover band. We largely do other people's music in the style they do it, so it would be near sacrilege for us to make a recording of that.

Blue Clear Sky members, including founders Marty White and Dennis Lee have original works which may or may not appear in Blue Clear Sky shows. These recordings may be available at BCS shows in the future.

Bio

Early in 2009, two Central Texas musician/businessmen had an idea: why not build a band around the most popular music in Texas, George Strait's? George doesn't tour all that much, and when he does, he charges big money - something your average bride & groom, corporate event planner, or festival can't afford. But these folks CAN afford Blue Clear Sky - a band that faithfully reproduces Mr. Strait's legendary hit music as well as other dance hall favorites.

So, Blue Clear Sky was born. The founders recruited 5 other top musicians, rehearsed, and went before the public in the fall of 2009. BCS didn't start small, either - the first gig was before 2000 people, and the second was before 2500. Both events were wildly successful and led to a growing gig schedule that continues today.

BCS is geared to the corporate market - launch parties, holiday events, conventions, and the like. But we're also appropriate for large weddings, ranch parties, rodeos, festivals, fairs, casinos, and dance halls. What says "Texas" more than a live band playing the hits of a man that personifies the state?

Besides focusing on this particular style of music - which is popular with all ages - BCS puts on a professional performance from top to bottom. Our musicians are skilled and have over 100 years of collective performance experience. The band may be new; the players, even the youngest, are old hands at this game. And, the professional business background of the band management ensures that you will have no worries about hiring BCS for your event. We will work with you from initial contact to loadout to make sure that the event runs smoothly.

Please contact Marty White today to discuss your needs and how Blue Clear Sky can fill them.
