TORTOLA: The 2010 BVI Music Festival ended on a high note, and it wasn’t Fantasia fantastic voice, but the great weather, packed new venue, and screaming fans that brought the curtains down on Monday morning.
The night could not have had a better start than the BVI’s own homegrown crooner MJ Blues. The local rock band Blue Essence followed suit with an exceptional performance that declared that the night was going to be amazing.

Sledge then launched into his most acclaimed song, 'When a Man Loves a Woman'. After two 'hip shaking' songs, Sledge took a rest and told the audience that the Blue Essence band made him feel like he was 25 all over again and he was being tempted to dance. "I'm not ashamed, I have paid my dues," Sledge said as he took a rest on a stage stool.

Blue Essence is made up of five seasoned musicians with varying musical backgrounds who decided to come together to create a new sound for Caribbean alternative music back in the summer of 2008. Since then, the band has performed for events at Scrub Island Resort, Bitter End Yacht Club, The Moorings, Peter Island Hotel, Treasure Isle Hotel/The Veranda Restaurant, Christmas on Main Street and BVI Music Festival. Members of the group have performed on international stages in Cyprus, Germany and venues across the continental USA and the Caribbean. The band has opened for acts such as Barron, Tanya Stephens, Mike Phillips, The Drifters, The Spinners, Fantasia, Joss Stone and Percy Sledge. As well as opening for Percy Sledge the Legend, the band had the privilege of being Mr. Sledge's performance band and backed him up for that concert. We also more recently had the pleasure of opening for John Legend in November 2011.
The sound of the band is distinctfully different from other local and regional groups and has already been able to generate a buzz around its uniqueness. As there is no sampling or sequencing in the music, the clean smooth sound is totally live and that energy can be felt by the audience. Blue Essence boasts an array of original music ranging from Reggae, Rock, Latin, Calypso, Soca, R&B, Alternative and Jazz. The group’s debut album is slated to be released in Spring of 2011 and promises to be like multi-flavored ear candy.
