"North Jersey Notes: Blue Food (Fort Lee, NJ)"

I recently received an email from Blue Food singer Angel Eduardo telling me that he read a recent column that I did on the guys from Ghost And The Big Sky, so he decided to ask me to check out his band! I am so happy that Angel reached out! Blue Food is awesome! I mean, I’m a metalhead, but I do have a soft spot for the funk since I am a bass player and all. Blue Food’s music exhibited some exceptional musicianship and some really talented songwriting in songs like “Chef” and “Waterwalking” off of the band’s EP, New Old Stock.

Blue Food actually formed as a joke while listening to James Brown, of all people, back in the fall of 2007. Singer Angel Eduardo casually mentioned to co-worker-turned-bassist Wilhelmus Sapanaro that it would be cool to front his own funk band. Within a few weeks, they started jamming with Angel’s buddy, Odin Alvarez on drums. Those weekly sessions would continue in Angel’s basement with Miles Ungar joining the band on guitar, Michael Carolan on trumpet, Jeremy Gorin on saxophone, and Chris Winn on trombone to round out the horn section. Blue Food is named after a George Carlin bit about the curious absence of any naturally occurring blue edibles. They recorded a three-song EP called New Old Stock in the spring of 2009, which was rounded out by an amazing version of Led Zeppelin’s “Immigrant Song.”

Blue Food has been playing all over the New York/New Jersey club circuit promoting their three-song EP. Angel tells me that they will be playing a cancer benefit at Mexicali Café in Teaneck, NJ, sometime in July, but if you can catch Blue Food sometime before then, do it! They are awesome! Check them out at bluefood.com.

New Old Stock (EP) - Released 7/10/09

Blue Food's debut EP. Featuring the two original tracks, "Chef" and "Waterwalking," this acted as a demo to give out to clubs and promoters as well as fans. Setting a precedent for the band's original and eye-catching presentation, each copy was hand wrapped in brown parcel paper and twine, opening up to reveal the band in packing peanuts.

Having a limited run of only 500 physical copies and given out for free at shows, this future Ebay collector's item is now only available as a digital download at bluefood.com!

Bio

Funk for the 21st century, Blue Food is a combination of high energy progressive rock and intricate grooves. The band was formed in 2008 and has been flattering audiences since with their dynamic stage presence and unique sound.

Blue Food is funk for the 21st century. Formed in 2008 and naming themselves after the George Carlin routine about the absence of any blue food ("Don't say blueberries, 'cause you know they're purple."), the band has been flattening audiences in the New York City area ever since their first show at Greenwich Village's famous Bitter End with their dynamic stage presence and unique sound, which is equal parts Led Zeppelin and Stevie Wonder.

In early 2011, after two years of performing live and writing material, the Blue Food headed into their guitarists home studio to independently record their full-length debut. The resulting album, entitled "Engines," is an ambitious collection of songs that blends the members various influences, from the classic rock and funk of the 1970s to modern pop, dance, and heavy metal. Officially released in August of 2012, Engines weaves seamlessly between the hard-hitting guitar riffage on songs like Boogiemen, the funky grooves on tracks like Joker Face, and the anthemic, catchy chorus of the albums centerpiece, Engine of the World.

Armed with a new CD and determined to make their mark on the modern music scene, Blue Food is prepared to bring their powerful sound to the masses. Combining their contemporary edge with old school sensibilities and a raucous, in-your-face live presence, this band is bound blow minds, shake asses, and shatter eardrums worldwide.
