Bio
The Bluegill Buddies live and breathe the roots music of pre World War II rural America. This is the music that preceded and gave birth to bluegrass.
Before the record industry became highly organized and genres formalized, rural old-time musicians exercised great freedom in expressing themselves musically. The collections of musicologists like Alan Lomax and Harry Smith preserve this music in its natural state.
Through extensive research and countless hours of listening to music originally released on old 78 records we hope to introduce people to an era when neighbors would share their music at barn dances and “back porch sings”. We strive to carry on this tradition and even add a few of our own neo-traditional compositions. While our approach to this instrumental and vocal music is low-key, the music itself is fun, exciting, honest, and straight-from-the-heart.
We play a variety of traditional string instruments, many of which are restored vintage period instruments.
