Blues Element

BandBluesJazz

Blues Element writes and performs jazzy-blue future standards that stretch the boundaries of the element of blues.

Biography

At the heart of Blues Element is the songwriting team of Jamie Browning and Iain Green. The songs keep pouring out... so they had to put a band together.

The New Album (as yet unnamed) features 12 new original jazzy/blues future standards written by vocalist Jamie & drummer Iain, and brought to life at Wellesley Sound in Toronto with the help of Kenmi Chank - guitar, Garfield Stoddart - guitar, Jason Wilson - piano, Rhodes and B3, Justin Snikkar - bass, Rebecca Campbell - background vocals, and Jeff McCulloch - Engineer. Mixing is just been completed at Silverbirch Productions with Ted Onyszczak, and a late summer release is planned.

In the meantime... Blues Element's 2005 release "Baby's Got the Blues" is currently on the air somewhere near you!

Recorded in the fall of 2004, this album brought together the incredible and diverse talents of some of the best players in Toronto's sprawling musical community including Alec Fraser, Rod Phillips, Michael Fonfara, Michael Keith, Dave Powell, Bryan Huntley, and Kenmi Chank.

Recorded and mixed at Liquid Toronto with blues maestro Alec Fraser (Jeff Healey, Jimmy Bowskill, Broken Joe) wearing the engineer and producer hats, "Baby's Got The Blues" was originally to include one cover song. That recording had to be put on the back burner due to an unsuccessful search to locate one of the publishers in order to obtain the licence to release it. Jamie and Iain may one day attempt the search again, but for now they've agreed that it's less trouble to write their own tunes.

All 10 tracks from Baby's Got The Blues are still receiving airplay on jazz and blues programs all over Europe, Australia and North America, as well as in a few spots in Indonesia, South America, Asia and the Middle East, and a big THANKS! goes out to all the djs and listeners all over the world for their continuing enthusiastic support.

Thanks to all the airplay, traffic to the Blues Element website has increased steadily, as have the sales of digital downloads. In 2006 Its Not You was included on the soundtrack of the feature film Chicknapping, and Jamie & Iain will be on the lookout for similar future opportunities.

Live Blues Element continues to be an evolving entity, but the live show always starts with a fun, sexy and very danceable mix of original tunes plus mid 20th century R&B, funk, blues, and jazz. Artists covered include Dinah Washington, Ruth Brown, James Brown, Louis Jordan, B.B. King, Robert Johnson and more.

Lyrics

So Good, So Fine

Written By: Jamie Browning

It was really nice to see you tonight
Though I could hardly see past your new woman’s big old…
…ass(k) me how I am, and I’ll tell you
I’ve never felt so good

It was really great to run into you today
But I could hardly run home past the two of you …
…alone I’m doing fine, yeah I’ll tell you,
I’ve never felt so good

Chorus:
I’ve never felt so good, I’ve never felt so fine
I’ve discovered I don’t really need you by my side
I’ve got a spine and I’ve got peace of mind
I’ve got what it takes, I’m feeling fine

It was quite a treat, to meet you in the street
And to meet your lady too
Well that’s something I could do without…
… you here, let me tell you
I’ve never felt so good

Chorus:
I’ve never felt so good, I’ve never felt so fine
I’ve discovered I don’t really need you by my side
I’ve got a spine and I’ve got peace of mind
I’ve got what it takes, I’m feeling fine

Bridge:
I’ve never felt so good, I’ve never felt so fine
So good, so fine, I’m halfway out of my mind
But I’m not missing you, no I’m not blue
I am so good, I am so fine

I’d rate this a ten, this seeing you again
But that score’s out of a hundred
I can’t forget what you said…
…“We are through”… let me tell you
I’ve never felt so good….

Chorus:
I’ve never felt so good, I’ve never felt so fine
I’ve discovered I don’t really need you by my side
I’ve got a spine and I’ve got peace of mind
I’ve got what it takes, I’m feeling fine

So Good, So Fine… So Good, So Fine

Smoke and Mirrors

Written By: Jamie Browning

I worry about everything and I worry about nothing
I’ve been like that forever, I’m just like my mother
I can’t do that “settle down” thing
Until we’re finished travelling
Can’t we have it both ways, I will love you always

(Chorus) It’s all smoke and mirrors
Things aren’t quite how they appear
I drove all night and now I’m standing here
Ready to face my fears

I’ve done my share of wishing on the first star of the evening
But I’m not superstitious or even all that ambitious
I just want to write songs, and sing them too, just as long
As long as I’m able to spin a web and tell a fable

(Chorus) It’s all smoke and mirrors
Things aren’t quite how they appear
I drove all night and now I’m standing here
Ready to face my fears

(Bridge) Suddenly for all the world to see
There’s a special way I look at you and you at me

I guess there’s no denying I’ve also done some crying
Some folks call that the blues and they’re glad of an excuse
To drown and dull their sorrows, to soften their tomorrows
But I don’t mind the sting of every single little thing

(Chorus) It’s all smoke and mirrors
Things aren’t quite how they appear
You know I drove all night and now I’m standing here
Ready to face my fears
I’m ready to face my fears
I’m ready to face my fears

Baby's Got The Blues

Written By: Jamie Browning

My baby's got the blues again
And there's nothing I can do to ease the pain
I've tried every lure a girl can use
But nothing seems to cure my baby's blues

I can hardly think of what else to say
I'm almost set to drink his blues away
You know I gotta make him understand
That its time to wake up and be a man

Chorus:
Baby's got the blues and it's making me blue too
Every morning, every evening, every afternoon
Baby's got the blues and there's nothing I can do
So I love him, yes I love him and he loves me too

My baby's got the blues today
But I know he didn't choose to feel this way
So I'm gonna give it another shot
I don't want to live anywhere he's not

Yeah I'm gonna stick right by his side
Stay there through the thick and the thin alike
I know in a while he'll be okay
'Cause I saw my baby smile again today

Chorus:
Baby's got the blues and it's making me blue too
Every morning, every evening, every afternoon
Baby's got the blues and there's nothing I can do
So I love him, yes I love him and he loves me too etc.
