""Fly Right" Hooch & The Bluesicians CD Review"

A lean, mean Hooch flew onto the LIBTC stage, snagging a trip to Memphis, where he will show the world just what's what with LI blues. Corresponding to that triumph is his new disk, "Fly Right", which holds forth with pure Windy City Blues power energized by Paolucci's taut vocals, searing slide, corruscating wit, and overwhelmingly lyrical harp. His regular band and a fantastic roster of LI greats supports a roundup of 11 cuts. There are 6 originals and wildly righteous covers of BB, Albert King, Little Charlie, Sir Musselwhite and Aaron Carter. Hooch's vocals have enough Estrin sneer to burn 'em up and the groove of the spool is fiery hot. The unmistakeable talents of LI legendland including Sam Taylor, Kerry Kearney, Pete Kiernan, Danny Kean, Tony Campo, and Tommy Keys are found supporting a Chicago getdown the likes of which are rarely heard on this island. For Hooch, this disk has been a catharsis, helping to exorcise demons and thus, the power and impact of this disk stem from a healing by the Blues. The emotional intensity, the instrumental clarity and the silky smooth production are all labors of love that shout out "Fly Right." Well, fly it right, bluesman and carry it to Memphis and beyond.

Bio

Bob "Hoochie Coochie" Paolucci (Hooch for short), is a North Jersey native musician/songwriter and has been playing harmonica, guitar and singing for over fifty years. He is a mostly self-taught musician, with the exceptions of having the great honor of having studied with both Sonny Terry (country/folk blues great) and Harry Feldman (chromatic virtuoso with The Harmonica Rascals). Hooch has been lucky enough to have toured with two great guitar legends, Son Seals (where he got his "Hoochie Coochie" nickname) and Louisiana Red, and has also shared the stage with performers like Johnny Johnson, Big Bill Morganfield (Son of Muddy Waters), Shamika Copeland, Koko Taylor, Junior Wells, Johnny Winters, Sammy Lawhorn, Victoria Spivy, Vasser Clemens, the 1995 Blues Hall of Fame recipient Mr. Sam Taylor, Eddie Shaw, Jimmy Vivino & The Conan O’Brian Band, Little Sammy Davis, Eddie Brogotti (Young Rascals), Todd Wolfe (guitarist for Sheryl Crow), Odessa, and even (oh my God) Don Ho.

Hooch's varied musical styles include everything from burning Chicago blues to melodic Delta blues to country rock to country western to reggae to jazz. His firm belief that there is no one way to play the harp and no one musical genre to play with it shows in his style and in his engaging performances.
