"High Sierra Music fest 06 review"

Quincy, CA
The breakout band of HSMF this year was Blue Turtle Seduction. They played HSMF in 2005 earning prime sets in 2006. Opening the grandstand stage to start up the festival, a late night opener on the forgiving wooden dance floor, and the primo spot of the weekend, closing Vaudeville stage.
We saw them off on their journey at the Grandstand. It was a nice set but felt like they were saving something back for the late show. They got the festival pushed off and we were sailing the High Seas of Quincy. This band had reworked a few of the numbers making them easier to consume. It was very cool to see this new evolution of the Turtle.
The late night set did not disappoint. They brought many of their bigger numbers and had the crowd ready for more. I love Hot Buttered Rum but BTS was just hitting their stride when they had to go.
In the heat of Sunday afternoon they followed ALO on the side stage sponsored by Grizzly Radio. Exhaustion from the ALO set made it hard to stick around. The first 3 numbers were full of energy but were impossible to match in the heat. Coming events pulled us to our shells for protection from the mid-day sun.
Sunday night Blue Turtle Seduction played one of the most coveted slots on the grid, Vaudeville. A little history… The Vaudeville stage is where the fiercest and hungriest bands do their work. It goes down all weekend.
Poobah set the stage this year with a party on the bayou. A large number of New Orleans friendly bands were booked, moss was hanging from the tent and Mardi gras was on! Every year, one of the festivals top 5 shows ends up being the closer on this stage. Scott Law and Papa Mali have both done their part to set the bar with previous efforts.
The New Mastersounds funkathon left nothing but sweat and satisfied souls. It felt like the stage would be closed. The New Mastersounds in their sophomore year at High Sierra sound like they were born in a channel of funk. How can British funksters make 40 years of American dominance sound “cute”? So as you see the bar was set high but the festivarians that stuck around knew ”Blue Turtles” are excellent jumpers.
How in the hell was Blue Turtle Seduction going to follow the New Mastersounds? Blue Turtle had to deliver a big show to keep taking it higher. The only solution was a power set. Blue Turtle went deep and delivered from the first note. It didn’t hurt that they were joined by the 2006 HSMF MVP Dan Lebowitz from ALO, Tim Carbone on fiddle from Railroad Earth and funk master George Porter from the funk kings, The Meters.
Someone built these boys a platform to launch their summer tour on a trajectory seemingly with no end. This set sealed Blue Turtle’s proper placement closing the Vaudeville stage. They left it all on the stage and gave the fans everything they had. Vaudeville is an outdoor tent and the first year it has ever closed before midnight. It’s an understatement to say everyone wanted more.
The looks on their faces as they left the stage was full of a tired pride and relief they had navigated the course as snappers. Jay Seals (Guitar) said at the conclusion he was so worked up before the Vaudeville set that he was worried he might puke.
It seemed he and the band knew the history of the stage, understanding of the value of this set closing the greatest music festival in the world. We look forward to more appearances by this band around the country and again High on the Sierra Seas. \
Special Thanks to Blue Turtle Seduction - It was touching when BTS sent healing energy out to our community friend and long time Taper Mr. Sandy Alexander. Many of you sit in your living rooms today listening to one of his many recordings. Sandy was unable to attend this year because of a health issue. RSR and the entire community send him healing energy and positive vibrations.

"Blue Turtle Seduction @ The Fillmore SF"

South Lake Tahoe's Blue Turtle Seduction started the evening off with a high energy set of fierce new-grass, rock and reggae-funk. Blue Turtle Seduction's lyrics tend to cleverly focus on the positives and always push the good vibe. Guitarist Jay Seals offered a new original, "Go Big or Go Home," midway through their set, which was received well by the capacity Fillmore crowd. After dropping a huge cover of Outkast's "I'll Call Before I Come," the band finished with a massive jam that left the crowed buzzed, primed for the rest of the evening. - Jambase.com

"Kicking off 2007"

This March Blue Turtle Seduction plays it’s longest Colorado Tour to date including a Pre and Post String Cheese Incident show at Dulcinea’s in Denver, a support spot with Vermont’s RAQ at the Fox Theatre in Boulder, and another support spot with Ekoostik Hookah @ Cervantes Masterpiece Ballroom in Denver. This visit comes on the Heels of a jam packed west coast Tour that spanned from San Diego to Seattle including a sold out performance at the Fillmore in San Francisco and a Pollstar showcase in Los Angeles. Most recently Blue Turtle Seduction is fresh off of 2 weeks in Hawaii and is ready to take it to a higher level in Colorado.

"High Sierra Music press release-06"

Rising from the special backcountry of Lake Tahoe, California, Blue Turtle Seduction began as a musical co-op of sorts - musicians joining together and playing original material. Five of the members began to realize the potential of the project and decided to take their adrenalin-driven performances on the road. Blue Turtle Seduction calls its sound "High-Altitude Bohemian Tribal Funk Grass" - a blend of bluegrass, mountain-reggae, world music, organic hip-hop and funk that was a hit with High Sierra fans in 2005... and surely will be in 2006 as well. Blue Turtle Seduction is Adam Navone (drums), Christian Zupancic (fiddle, mandolin, vocals), Glenn Stewart (harmonica, vocals), Jay Seals (guitar, vocals) and Stephen Seals (bass).

"Something for everyone"

Jam-grass. Hip-hop. Techno-funk. and just about any other kind of hyphenated music you can think of. Whatever genre you prefer, you'll probably find some flavor of it on Under Sierra Ground.
Having a taste of everything for everybody can be a strengh for a disc. It gives any listener something to like about the album. But it can also be a weakness, as it means that the listening audience has to sit through, or worse yet, skip through, the other material in order to enjoy their particular favorite type of tunes.
Happily, that isn't a problem of any consequence with Blue Turtle Seduction's debut disc. All of the songs are eminently listenable. It's the kind of music that opens doors to new music, rather than driving listeners to shut out the unfamiliar. Of course fans of the Tahoe based band won't be surprised by this. BTS has been spreading it's own particular brand of, as the man says, high-altitude bohemian tribal funk grass music around the Sierra for years now. It's not unusual to spot a "Keep Tahoe Seductive" sticker on a passing car.
If you're a Blue Turtle Seduction enthusiast, you'll feel vindicated when you hear this disc. If you're not as familiar with the group, you'll wonder why it took you so long to catch on - why it took you so long to get seduced. - Rob Aulwes, Tahoe Daily Tribune

Bio

Blue Turtle Seduction out of South Lake Tahoe California has built a solid fan base over the last 4 years of touring and recording music throughout the western states and Hawaii. 2006 saw the band play over 225 live shows in ten states. This schedule allowed for the refining of not only their live performances but also their song crafting and adding to their large repertoire of original songs. Blue Turtle’s music is guaranteed to move your feet as well as your head with driving rhythms and thought provoking lyrics that push the limits of style and genre. “the act…known for its inspired live sets, showcases an uncanny ability to slip stitch and pass multiple grooves. Drawing from a multi-instrumental palate… the five-piece moves from spirited and free wheeling excursions into more complex sections with ease.”—Nick Hutchinson, Denver Westword
