"Sidewalk Glass - Single Review"

Brisbane's The Better Mousetrap Treatment walk a careful line between sweet and saccharine with their anachronistic indie pop, which comes barreling out of the late nineties like the noughties never happened. They sound like The Lucksmiths, with more instrumentation, or The Earthmen, with less, hearts bouncing away on their tidy little sleeves. Cute.

"Finely honed laidback pop goodness"

Paper And Pictures starts with Modern Art, a cruisy, if slightly long track with well-balanced vocals and dreamy guitar. Dylan kicks off with energetic guitars, before adding melodic vocals and a simple yet catchy chorus. Early Days is a smooth combination of infectious guitar riffs and light-hearted lyrics. I Can’t Tell is my personal favourite track, featuring breezy vocals, standout piano, subtle yet driving drums and gentle guitar. With Paper and Pictures the local band has produced one of those EPs that slowly grows on you as its jangly guitar and sharp vocals get under your skin.

Bio

The Better Mousetrap Treatment are an indie band from Brisbane who specialise in the sunny, melancholic pop the city has become famous for.

Originally formed by a trio of like-minded boys from Lismore in northern New South Wales, the Mousies have since blossomed into a five-piece of interweaving guitars, keys and harmonies led by the songwriting partnership of Martin Somerville and Matt Santosa. The band weave threads of Augie March, Broken Social Scene and Bloc Party into their rich tapestry of song, producing music that is both mature and exuberant, thoughtful and spontaneous.

Their debut EP Paper and Pictures attracted support from local community radio, particularly standout track "I Can't Tell", featuring the dreamy guest vocals of Mel Tickle from fellow Brisbanites Little Scout.

Since then the Mousies have recorded their second EP The Hole In Yours Truly with ace knob-twiddler Yanto Browning (The Medics, The Belligerents) in the serene bushland surrounds of Airlock Studios in Samford Valley just outside of Brisbane. The EP was preceded by the single "Sidewalk Glass" - which received airplay on Triple J in Australia - is a breezy hit of pure pop that charmed listeners with its jangling guitar lines and sweet boy/girl harmonies.

With the release of EP number two imminent, the Mousies look set to have a big year ahead of them in 2012.
