Bob Ancona

Bob Ancona

BandFolkAcoustic

I play guitar and write songs. So do thousands of others. Must be something to it.

Biography

If it has guitar in it, I've been influenced by it. (Sometimes I wish I'd picked harpsichord or tuba. Not so much competition.)

That’s just a melody
It’s not a song
Life and the river
Go on and on

Winter’s coming closer
Day by day
The music doesn’t stop
It just fades away

Spent the night
With the full moon
Come back, come back
Come back soon

Sometimes you get there
Walking away
Sometimes you get there
When you stay

(Instrumental Break)

Takes one to know one
So it seems
Two people wake up
With different dreams

All the lonely trains leave
Late at night
It’s always darkest
Before the light

The sun slipped a note
Beneath my door
It’s a new day
Look for more

Beyond the river
The sky looks blue
The river takes me back
Back to you

That’s just a melody
It’s not a song
Life and the river
Go on and on

Kansas Golden Daughter

I wandered into a café in Kansas
On a lonely night going west
She was there working late
Her eyes were blue her name was Jess

She asked if I wanted a job
Washing up the dirty dishes
I did need the money bad
But I wanted her and her kisses

I spent the next few hours
With my hands in a sink full of water
But I couldn’t take my eyes off
Kansas golden daughter

Chorus:
And even when I’m down and dirty
I can still see her so fresh
Kansas golden daughter
Midwest blue-eyed Jess
Midwest blue-eyed Jess

And when my work was all done
And I had to be on my way
I said, “Come with me to California”
But she said she had to stay

We walked that night through a wheat field
And I did some sweet talkin’
She asked if she’d see me again
But I had to say I couldn’t be stoppin’

Then we stood there lookin’ at each other
With the moon shinin’ all around us
And she took my hand and said, “Well then,
This is your night for Kansas”

Chorus:
And even when I’m down and dirty
I can still see her so fresh
Kansas golden daughter
Midwest blue-eyed Jess

Repeat Chorus, repeat last line twice

You're So Cool

Billie Blue from Baltimore
Keeps the wolf from the door
She sings so sweet and high
Takes off into the sky

Billie Blue you’re so cool
You ain’t nobody’s fool
You should be singin’ this song
I’ll just sing along

Jack Sprat could eat not fat
His wife could eat no lean
Jack bought a diesel car
Wife bought gasoline

Jack Sprat you’re so cool
You ain’t nobody’s fool
Right from a nursery rhyme
And into the big time

Wicked Ruby’s got a tattoo
A big red heart ripped in two
Who’s got the other half
Ruby she just laughs

Wicked Ruby you’re so cool
You ain’t nobody’s fool
Go around don’t give a fig
Knows what guys dig

Bridge:
Frankly my dear I don’t give a damn
Gable said to Scarlett way back when
And Jack Nicholson he just grins
Wish I could be like him

Felix the cat that son-of-a-gun
Stretches out in the sun
Plays a game of cat and mouse
Acts like he owns the house

Felix the cat you’re so cool
You ain’t nobody’s fool
I guess it’s true what they say
Every cat has his day

Careless days
Sunburn shores
Roller coaster’s
Crashing roars

Train whistles
Moon bright nights
Idle dreams
Taking flight

Chorus:
Like Eden’s trees
Lost far in time
Faint melodies
And distant rhymes

Radios
Playing songs
First kisses
To belong

Secret glance
Desire smiles
Promises
For a while

Chorus:
Like Eden’s trees
Lost far in time
Faint melodies
And distant rhymes

(Instrumental break)

Open doors
Epiphanies
Life’s sweet
Mysteries

Friends, lovers
There and gone
Like the wind
And the song

Chorus:
Like Eden’s trees
Lost far in time
Faint melodies
And distant rhymes

Repeat Chorus

Hear the song of the moon
Like a lullaby
Soft and silver, my child
Into the night

Let it wash over you
Like summer rain
Lie there, dream
In its refrain

Hear the song of the stars
Like a lullaby
Soft and silver, my child
Into the night

Let it wash over you
Like summer rain
Lie there, dream
In its refrain

Do do do do
Do do do
Do do do do
Mmmm, mmm,mmm

Hear the song of the moon
Like a lullaby
Hear the song of the stars
Into the night

Draw some pictures on the wall
Watch the leaves as they fall
Play tag with the breeze
Touch the sky above the trees

You never know just what you’ll find
In the great on beyond
I will see you there
Walk this way

Chorus:
And remember when I told ya
Under the Magnolia
Don’t you ever fear
You always have a place right here

Get your feet wet in the stream
Find your heart and your dream
The road is long, deep and wide
On the way to the other side

You never know what you’ll find
In the great on beyond
I will see you there
Walk this way

Chorus:
And remember when I told ya
Under the Magnolia
Don’t you ever fear
You always have a place right here

Bridge:
Thousands of miles yet to go
Thousands of faces yet to know
Thousands of miles away from sleep
Thousands of promises still to keep

Verse:
The day waits at your feet
The night calls warm and sweet
Oceans wave as you go by
Stars wink in the sky

You never know what you’ll find
In the great on beyond
I will see you there
Walk this way

Chorus:
And remember when I told ya
Under the Magnolia
Don’t you ever fear
You always have a place right here

Write me a letter send it to my honey
Send her all my love send her all my money
If it takes all day and all night
Take it all just get it right

Chorus:
And if I die before my time
Don’t bury me in one of those suits
And if we make it through the winter time
Honey let’s put down some roots

We’re goin’ wishin’ by the wishin’ well
We’re goin’ kissin’ and never gonna tell
We’ll count the stars and count our toes
Ain’t that just the way it goes

Chorus:
And if I die before my time
Don’t bury me in one of those suits
And if we make it through the winter time
Honey let’s put down some roots

I promise you yes I do
There’s nothin’ old there’s nothing new
Birds gotta whistle fish gotta fly
That’ll be the day when I die

Chorus:
And if I die before my time
Don’t bury me in one of those suits
And if we make it through the winter time
Honey let’s put down some roots

Honey do and honey don’t
Honey will and honey won’t
Can’t you feel it in your blood
Let’s you and me go into the woods

Chorus:
And if I die before my time
Don’t bury me in one of those suits
And if we make it through the winter time
Honey let’s put down some roots

Chorus:
I didn’t die before my time
I wasn’t buried in one of those suits
We made it through the winter time
And honey we put down some roots

Verse:
I remember the days
Playin’ with my friends
Walkin’ home for supper
Before the day ends
Now I got three watches
Don’t have the right time
Lived in lots of places
Not one of ‘em’s mine

Chorus:
I just wanna go home
I just wanna go home
I just wanna go home
I just wanna go home

Verse:
Was it never in the cards
Never written in the stars
To find a place
Where heart meets sky
Beyond tears
Beyond why

Chorus:
I just wanna go home
I just wanna go home
I just wanna go home
I just wanna go home

Bridge:
Eeny meeny miny mo
Cross my heart
And hope to die
Last one out
Is a rotten egg
Ready or not
Here I come

Verse:
The water falls
The rain drops
The mountains climb
The seas rock
The night falls
The moon beams
The wind sighs
The day dreams

Chorus:
I just wanna go home
I just wanna go home
Why can’t I just go home?
Why can’t I just go home?

Verse:
Come over here
Take off your clothes
Let’s both go
Where lovers go
Soft is the flower
Sweet is the kiss
Wish life could always
Be like this

Chorus:
We can both go home
We can both go home
We can both go home
We can both go home

The Back Street Blues

Written By: Bob Ancona

Cryin’ and laughin’ sound the same down here
And it’s hard to tell the saint from the sinner
You can get lost in a crowd you can even disappear
And not bein' a loser doesn’t mean you’re a winner
‘Cause there’s lots to win but lots more to lose
When you’re learnin’ how to play the back street blues

Electric spark and chewin’ gum man what a smell
You can ride to the end of the line
When the lights go out it just means all is well
Only in the darkness can you really see what shines
Like the blade and the moon and that slick pair of shoes
The ones you use for dancin’ to the back street blues

You learn to go around what you can’t go through
And how to sleep where you’ve never been before
And gettin’ high is easy when you know what to do
The hard part is gettin’ up off the floor
And with so much to listen to still you choose
To only hear the sound of the back street blues

Instrumental Break

So hush little baby don’t you cry and don’t you moan
You can come close but please don’t touch
Now you’re a big boy and you’ve come into your own
And you don’t have to think about it all that much
But though you’ve been there and paid your dues
You’ll never forget the beat of the back street blues
The beat of the back street blues
