"Bob Biggerstaff and Mike MacRae"

Bob Biggerstaff and Mike MacRae
These two top comedians share the stage

published: December 13, 2007

Local comedians Bob Biggerstaff and Mike MacRae, who got their start at Houston’s Laff Stop, can now add “As Seen on TV” to their resumes. Biggerstaff was featured on Dave Attell’s recent HBO special Captain Miserable in a closing sketch. His best material is born out of his dry wit and love for watching — but not playing — sports. In one bit the, um, slightly portly (sorry, Bob) funny man talks about being introduced for a gig in St. Louis as “from Houston” during the Astros’ fight for the Series. The audience booed him and shouted “Astros Suck!” “Take it easy, folks,” Biggerstaff said. “I don’t know if you know this, but I don’t play for the Astros. I know I look like an athlete, but…”

MacRae, who recently moved to Austin, appeared on The Tonight Show with David Letterman over the summer as part of Impressionist Week. He killed with spot-on imitations of actors such as Harrison Ford, Sean Connery and Ozzy Osbourne. But MacRae isn’t just a “silly voice guy.” We gave him Best Comedian in 2002 for his ability to craft those voices into humorous interactions. One bit, in which he imagines being in a student in a class taught by Professor Indiana Jones, features the voices of both Ford and Connery.

See these and other scenarios which are probably much funnier when Biggerstaff and MacRae tell them at 8:30 p.m. today and Thursday, and 8 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday. The Laff Stop, 526 Waugh Drive. Through December 22. For tickets and information, call 713-524-2333 or visit www.laffstop.com. $15 to $25.

Wed., Dec. 19, 8:30 p.m.; Thu., Dec. 20, 8:30 p.m.; Fri., Dec. 21, 8 & 10:30 p.m.; Sat., Dec. 22, 8 & 10:30 p.m., 2007 - Houston Press

Bio

Houston, Texas has been the home of many greats. Nolan Ryan, Earl Campbell, Hakeem Olajuwon, Patrick Swayze, Beyonce and the guy that played Data on Star Trek The Next Generation among them. Add Bob Biggerstaff to that list. Bob came to Houston from Liverpool, NY while still in high school and attended the University of Houston. While still in college he became a doorman at the legendary Laff Stop. After a few months “manning the door” he started to perform at the Laff Stop open mic night and developed his self-deprecating, sports related style. Bob quickly became one of Houston’s top comics winning the Funniest Person in Houston Contest in 2003. He has been successful in many comedy competitions becoming a national finalist in Sierra Mist’s "Search For the Next Great Comic", HBO’s "The Lucky 21", and Comedy Centrals "Open Mic Fight". In 2007 Bob made his national television debut on NBC’s hit show Last Comic Standing and was seen on Dave Attell’s HBO special “Captain Miserable”. 2008 looks to be even better as appearances on Comedy Central's "Live at Gotham" (July 18) and the nationally syndicated Bob and Tom Radio Show are in the offing. From comedy clubs, colleges, and theaters in the U.S. to our military bases overseas, Bob has entertained people all over the world. Be sure and catch him at a club near you before he takes all his money and buys an island off the coast of Fiji and lives out his days as a 300-pound weirdo ala Marlon Brando.
