"Get To Know Bobby Duque"

Bobby Duque is a 22-year-old producer from San Antonio, TX. Before landing in the EDM world, Bobby played in several rock bands so he’s no stranger to music. He only recently started producing electronic music, launching his career in EDM last October. He’s already accomplished so much in that short time span, including releasing his first EP, ‘Take-Off,’ featuring 5 dance tracks & 1 instrumental track. ?One of our interns, Trevor, had the distinct privilege of Skyping with him & asking him a few questions about himself, his goals, & his personal life.

T: How were you first introduced to EDM?
B: My best friend Tree Perry (aka Gorilla Perry) showed me a song from Borgore. I think it was ‘Guided Relaxation Dub.’ Still probably one of my favorite dubstep tracks ever.

T: What made you want to produce music?
B: I’ve been playing music since I was young and I’ve always been interested in the creation of it. I was in my band when one day I just decided that I wanted to make an electronic/dubstep song, & I made a tune called “Stitch Says.”

T: What’s your favorite color & why?
B: Probably green or dark purple… or maybe blacks. I’ll get back to you once they find a color darker than my soul!

T: What’s your favorite tune, any genre?
B: Hard to answer. I go through favorite songs every other week. I would have to say one of my all time favorites is Iris by the Goo Goo Dolls. This week I’ve been listening to Secret Empire (Connor Ragan’s project). He just released his album & I think it’s brilliant! I love a lot of electronic music as well. I just mostly listen to other styles so I can find influence from them.

T: Who or what are your influences?
B: Life experiences, poetry, & other artists. I’ve always been a huge fan of Linkin Park, so I try to get influence from them as well. As far as other EDM artists, they are all doing great things! My buddy Crizzly inspires me a lot as well, especially to see how far he has come in so little time.

T: What’s do you do in your free time?
B: I relax. I tend to sleep between 3 & 4 hours a night on a regular basis, so when I have free time, I relax.

T: Is there anything we should be looking out for in the near future?
B: More tunes, more shows, & more stuff in the works [that] I’m crossing my fingers on but can’t talk about yet.

T: Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
B: I see myself making music, whether it’s electronic, rock, pop, or whatever. I love what I am doing now & I love the way it has been growing. I’m excited to see what the future holds for sure. There are so many things that I want to do musically!

T: What do your family & friends think about your music career?
B: My family has definitely always been very supportive of me & my music career decisions.

T: I’ve been told you’re the brother of Sonny Moore (Skrillex). How do people react when you tell them that?
B: Well, It’s not something that I go around telling people randomly or anything, but if people ask, I do tell them the truth. Yeah, we are biological brothers, but I’m trying to make a name for myself in the music world. I’m not interested in riding any coat tails or anything. I’m just trying to do me. I enjoy the music I make & I like it to speak for itself. He has accomplished a lot & he is a very talented artist, but we are two different individuals & two different artists. We just do our own thing when it comes to music. - Billionaire's Apparel

"Meet Bobby Duque"

Electronic fast thumb psycho driven with the pulse to illuminate the darkest of souls and hold the attention to those who chose to be martyrs and dive down the mosh pit once you drop the hook - FDOTR prose
I wanted to hold on to this interview to premiere it for the beginning of the year, wanted to start FDOTR kicking ass and taking names, I felt with the help of Bobby Duque we could do that. Bobby is the brother of Sonny Moore aka Skrillex and it is the nicest person you can talk to and the nicest when he gets into his dj set. We conducted this interview through facebook chat considering he lives in San Antonio, Texas and I in NY. Bobby also recreated the FDOTR mascot just for the pic. Here it is the interview, followed by some of Bobby's music which I feel stands out for itself. [listen to spiderweb, dude has a kick ass voice for the dirtyness we call dubstep music]

I'm a musician first off. I sang and played guitar in rock bands since I was about 15. I had shared the stage with pretty awesome acts in the rock scene but never really hit the next level.
Born in Los Angeles and moved to San Antonio TX in age 18. When Bobby turned 21 I started listening to electronic/dubstep music more.

So my goal starting out was really just to try it for fun and to see if I could create a song sounding like other artists did and make it my own style and feel. I made one song and people loved it, made another one and got a better reaction. I've been making them since, and loving it!
Bobby likes to stick to his rock roots but you can't live on bread alone hence "Variety is the spice of life"

Seems I have really found my edge in electronic music. But because rock is where my roots really are, I still like to put a bit of a rock edge in my music.
FDOTR; How do you feel about wowing an audience?
Bobby D: I like the feeling of hard bass drops almost like a good breakdown in a heavy rock song.I really like producing music that others enjoy. I do make music because I love it, but I also make it because I love the feeling of having a large amount of people listening, singing along or talking about my music.
FDOTR: What was the first song you did that started getting attention?

Bobby D: Well, I released my first electronic/ dubstep song called Stitch Says. This was a few days after I posted a status saying "I'm going to do something that none of you are going to expect of me. I released it, people heard it and loved it. It's what made me want to create more songs.
FDOTR: You started doing rock music, what made you go from rock to electronic music?

Bobby D: Well, I had been doing rock music for a while. I had been in various bands, the last one being a band called Little Sleep.

I had known about dubstep and electronic music for a while, but never wanted to dive into the genre (I was honestly just being narrow minded at the time).

I started listening to, hearing more about and really liking electronic music. Especially because of the shows.

My first thought was something like "I wonder if I could make that kind of music but at my own feel into it." Just to see if I could and see how people would react. Also that it would be rad to perform like that while also singing. The way I got into it was random and just a spirt of the moment thing..
FDOTR: In the spirit of randomness bobby, how random are you?

Bobby D: [laughs] I don't know. I guess I would consider myself pretty random.
I like doing spirit of the moment things.Like this last week, I ended up driving to Austin to watch Madeon play. This kid is a 17 year old prodigy. Didn't know who he was til I saw him play, but he put on an amazing show! Did that and drove back home getting 3 hours of sleep before having to work the next day.
FDOTR: What is the difference of styles that separate you from your brother?

Bobby D:[laughs] well the spiderweb song was a collaboration with another Artist from France named UFOKIL. He has some really awesome stuff. The style brought to that song is really a mixture of both of us. His french electronic feel mixed with my vocals. It was awesome to work with him on that track.
FDOTR: it is such a flawless effort

Bobby D; As far as the differences in style between my brother an I, It's really hard to say. I don't ever really start off creating a song knowing what the end result is going to be. I'll start with a melody, or a simple bassline and work from there. So the difference between our styles of music really is that we aren't the same person. Though we might have similar voices or influences. It is a bit different. But if anything, I really like to push my sound as more rock driven.
FDOTR: Bobby I want to thank you for re-creating the FDOTR mascot, will you take with you if you go on tour?
Bobby D: It was actually fun for me to create it. Yes, I will totally take it on tour with me!

FDOTR [Random question round] Bobby yo - Falling Down on the Random

"Meet Bobby Duque"

The music industry hasn’t always been particularly kind to siblings trying to follow in the footsteps of their famous brothers and sisters. For every Matthew Hawtin-tier relation, there’s a few Haylie Duffs miserably failing to chart and bickering with Ashlee Simpson over who had the rights to the song Boyfriend. Oftentimes, it seems that for every genuine musical talent, there’s a less-inspired relative – sometimes a few times removed – trying to get their own slice of the cash cow.

With that in mind, it was with a hint of trepidation that we posted Bobby Duque’s remix of Zedd’s Shotgun last month: Bobby Duque, you see, being brother to none other than Skrillex. The reaction to Duque’s tune was an unsurprising mix of “Not another Skrillex”, “Family whoring” and “I don’t see more deserving producer getting this attention”. Bobby Duque himself also responded to the article with the defense: “No, there’s not coat tails being ridden. Different sounds, different label, different artists. The only similarity is similar looking faces.” So before the ITM readership writes Bobby Duque (that’s Dew-kay) off, we thought it was only fair to speak to the producer directly and get the first-hand account of his career.

First up, it has to be said that that both Bobby Duque and his elder bro share a pretty similar musical style: call it complextro, brostep or (if you want to go that far) dubstep, the similarities are arguably there.

ut 21 year old Duque maintains that his career is coattail-free. “I mean, we’re two different individuals,” he begins. “There’s really not much to say about it. He has his emotion that goes into his music and I have my own world and I put that into my music. Every artist has their own feel and though they may sound similar, it all comes from the heart. Mine does and his does.” Comparisons are, however, inevitable. “I mean, it’s just not necessarily that [comparisons] are frustrating. People know and people are gonna find out that we are biological brothers, but we kind of just do our own thing.”

It’s also worth noting that both Duque and Sonny Moore share similar musical beginnings. It’s now fairly common knowledge that before he shaved half his head and became Skrillex, Sonny Moore was the frontman of the hardcore band From First to Last. Similarly, Bobby Duque’s musical initiation was with the rock group Little Sleep. - In The Mix
