"Bodhi jams with an ego-free style"

Bodhi's living large, with no one in charge.

The jam band rockers from Fort Lauderdale want it that way, rolling with an ego-free ease and playing freestyle extended grooves at clubs around South Florida. The group, formed in January, has made sure not to turn its gigs into a one-man star vehicle. They avoid what bassist/lead vocalist Brett Diaz calls "singer-songwriter syndrome."

"It's not one person, their songs, their words, done their way," Diaz said. "We're a perfect musical democracy. We're all equals. Everyone contributes."

The outcome is a blend of Southern rock with jazzy undertones that's punctuated by bluesy, raspy vocals, driving guitar riffs, melodic saxophone lines, organ solos and a strong back beat. Improvised rhythms are coupled with lyrics that cover everything from road trips to girlfriends and grandparents.

Taking the populist approach on and off stage works well, mainly due to the tight bonds of friendship between the members, all of whom are in their early to mid-20s. Along with Diaz, there's drummer Jake Beal, guitarist Aaron Dumas and Ross Goldman on saxophone and keyboards.

Goldman and Diaz go back the longest. The two have been pals since attending Silver Ridge Elementary School in Davie. Their circle expanded when Diaz transferred to Chaminade-Madonna College Preparatory in Hollywood and met Dumas. Diaz and Beal were music majors at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton.

Despite going to different high schools and colleges, the foursome always found time to jam informally. They began performing as Bodhi after backing up Diaz at a college recital this past winter. The group liked their sound and decided to make the union official, plucking their stage name from a book on Eastern religion.

"Bodhi means to become enlightened," Diaz said. "It struck the right chord with us."

The band expects to take a break over the holidays to work on their debut disc, due out in February. Before heading back into the studio, they'll be at the Jolly Jam Holiday Concert Toy and Food Drive, starting at 6 tonight at Tobacco Road, 626 S. Miami Ave., Miami. The show features artists, vendors and four stages of live music. There will also be poker and domino tournaments to raise money for autism research. Go to tobacco-road.com, myspace.com/tobaccoroad626 or call 305-374-1198.

"Bodhi: The Band To Watch As Jam's Rising Contender In 2010"

Bodhi: The Band To Watch As Jam's Rising Contender In 2010.

Written by Laura Jenney

For so many music lovers everywhere, jam is the genre of preference because it embraces MORE mixtures and crossovers of multiple styles of music at once than any other genre, and incorporates them into one; thus creating a 'musical product' that ultimately appeals to vastly more people at once. ...Which is smart thinking if you're a professional musician of that genre, if you're looking at the music you create equally from a business perspective as well as from an artistic perspective.

Because jam combines elements of any number of genres at once ranging from rock, jazz, blues, reggae, folk, country, soul, R&B and anything and everything imaginable from heavy metal to Gospel, from funk to bluegrass and beyond, it of course, gains the potential to generate more fans, more CD sales, more bookings, more concert ticket sales, etc., which equates to greater success for the artist, (as well as for record labels, concert promoters etc.)

In short, the more broad audience and/or marketing appeal you have, the greater amount of success you stand to achieve. However for the artist, there is that ONE catch...

To be a contender in the genre of jam, you have to master of ALL the styles of music that makes jam, well, JAM; and have enough creative ability to create a 'musical product' that not only is distinctly your own signature sound, and sets you apart from other bands in today's competitive music industry, but sets you in the forefront. ...Which is no easy feat considering that today's fans are true connoisseurs of ALL of the many styles of music that are utilized within the genre of jam. So with jam, their is no faking it, and one cannot expect to be promoted or marketed on just one's 'good looks', as is unfortunately all too true within other genres. ...You simply have to be truly outstanding performers to make it in the genre of jam.

Jam's connoisseur fans KNEW from the moment they first experienced the music of such prolific acts such as: Grateful Dead, Gov't Mule, Phish, Widespread Panic, Robert Randolph and the Family Band, The Derek Trucks Band, Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, Blues Traveler, Bob Weir and Rat Dog, Phil Lesh and Friends, Les Claypool, Primus, The Dirty Dozen Brass Band, G Love & Special Sauce, Little Feat, Michael Franti & Spearhead, Oteil Burbridge, Spin Doctors, Yonder Mountain String Band, amongst others, would indeed rise up to becoming the highly celebrated if not legendary acts that they have become today. One band that jam's connoisseur fans are placing their bets on today to be THE band to watch as jam's rising contender in 2010 is the band Bodhi out of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.

...And of course those true connoisseur music fans are absolutely right about the band Bodhi as well, as Bodhi's popularity is catching on with a profound quickness. For those of you who have not yet experienced Bodhi's music for yourself yet, we at Mindsweep Entertainment & Promotions are proud to have the honor of turning you on to them.

Bodhi is: Jake Beal, (drums and backing vocals), Brett Diaz, (bass and lead vocals), Ross Goldman, (sax, keyboards and backing vocals), and Aaron Dumas, (lead guitar and backing vocals).

Bodhi's sound consists of smoking hot originals, which indeed take listeners on a fun, fast and action packed ride through a multitude of elements of multiple genres, (that define the genre of jam), while performing their distinct brand of music with master precision, ultra tight maneuvers, and smooth transitions from one style into another. Notable examples of this can be heard in their song "Minor Inconvenience", which starts off with a heavy duty funk/rock groove at the musically skilled hands of the band's guitarist and bassist, Aaron Dumas and Brett Diaz; then flawlessly transitions into a taste of some classy jazz from the added prowess of Ross Goldman on saxophone; and of course, a solid contribution from Jake Beal on drums. The end result, an absolutely great song that perhaps is best described as sounding somewhat like Gov't Mule meets Crosby, Stills & Nash, meets Steely Dan, that's going to stick in your head for at least a week. (Don't try this stunt at home.)

Another example of Bodhi's immense amount of versatility can be heard in the contrast between their songs "Fridge" with it's slower melodic groove, (with an almost Allman Brothers-esque guitar work in the song), and between Bodhi's hard driving, rocking smoker, "Memphis", which could best be described, (if at all able to compare Bodhi's sound to any other major act's sound), as being a cross between Widespread Panic meets Sly and the Family Stone, if one can imagine. And just when you think you've got Bodhi's sound pegged, they will shatter that conception with one of their original 'earworms' (a song that can only be surgically removed out of your head), like their track, "Old & New"; which I can only describe as sounding like somewhat of a reminiscent cross between Elvin Bishop meets Frank Zappa. ...In a Bodhi sort of way.
Within the band’s perfect musical democracy, each member contributing just as much to the band’s sound as the others.

...But don't just take my word for it; you can check out Bodhi's music for yourself by visiting their official MySpace site at www.myspace.com/bodhifl, and join the ever steadily increasing number of Bodhi's fans, that with an astounding swiftness, Bodhi's fan base has exceeded beyond their region in the Southeastern US; and has quickly grown into a national and international fanbase as well.

All songs mentioned above are from Bodhi's soon to be released independently produced, self titled CD, which is expected to be officially released in early 2010. Impressively, the band reports an already brisk amount of sales from individual tracks which are already available for purchase via a number of internet purchasing outlets such as iTunes, Amazon.com, Rhapsody, and is also available from Bodhi's official MySpace site and official website at www.bodhilive.com. Fans and music industry execs can also gain more info on the band, check out videos, upcoming concert dates and more by visiting their site.

...Equally as impressive is the amount of media attention Bodhi is gaining even (months) before the release of their debut album; and considering the official kick off of their media campaign doesn't even start for about another month yet. Their latest media appearance, which took place last month, Bodhi was honored as being a featured guest and performing live on NBC's South Florida Today Show, which airs in the Greater Miami Metropolitan Area.

Video from Bodhi's appearance on NBC's South Florida Today can be seen via AOL Video, YouTube, and Myspace Video.

Of course, Bodhi is already in the process of organizing a tour to promote their soon to be released self titled CD. Astoundingly enough, dates are already starting to fill up fast, again, even (months) before the CD's release. The kick off of their tour is officially scheduled to start January 16th, at the 12th Annual Medical Marijuana Benefit Concert at Tobacco Road in Miami, Florida. (...See, I told you they were a smokin' band!) However, fans can catch Bodhi performing live on December 4th at the Jolly Jam Food Drive Concert, which is a benefit event featuring 20 bands on 4 stages that will be held also at Tobacco Road in Miami, Florida. (The legendary concert venue Tobacco Road is located at 626 South Miami Ave., Miami, Florida 33130. For more information on these events call: 305-303-3976, or visit the venue's official website at www.tobacco-road.com.)

Bodhi is currently seeking and accepting dates for their upcoming tour. To book the band Bodhi, or to possibly gain them as an opening act, or for media appearances, contact Brett at B.D. Productions by phone at 954-560-3642, or by e-mail at musicbodhi@yahoo.com. The band plans to tour the US first, and is currently also seeking and accepting corporate sponsorship to extend their tour even beyond the United States to perform for, and embrace fans everywhere. Members of Bodhi has expressed that they would especially like to extend their tour to perform for fans in such places as Canada, The Caribbean, Mexico, Central and South America, England, Ireland, Scotland, Germany, Sweden, Demark, Spain, France, Italy, Greece, Poland, (as much of Europe as possible); and possibly Russia, Japan, Australia; and would be proud to perform anywhere and everywhere fans demand.

Bodhi has already recently opened for the band Sister Hazel, and more dates as an opening act with several world renowned headlining acts are also being considered and are possibly in the works. As the Manager of the Florida Office of T&T Management & Booking Agency as well as being the Owner of Mindsweep Entertainment & Promotions, I personally recommend Bodhi as sure fire crowd pleasers to talent buyers as an outstanding opening act for just about any major headliner in a number of genres because of the high quality of their music as well as the rich amount of versatility the band possesses. I also personally recommend Bodhi as an outstanding choice as an opening act for any headliner that would like to increase their concert ticket sales.

Bodhi's musical influences are as diverse as they are stellar, and include such outstanding acts as: The Allman Brothers Band, Gov't Mule, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Grateful Dead, Phish, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Cream, Janis Joplin, Widespread Panic, Dave Matthews Band, Ozomatli, Blues Traveler, Robin Trower, Jeff Beck, Steve Vai, Joe Bonamassa, Rose Hill Drive, AC/DC, Herbie Hancock, Black Sabbath, Curtis Mayfield, Eric Johnson, Mike Stern, Michael Jackson, Pearl Jam, Queen, Pink Floyd, Frank Zappa, Stevie Ray Vaughan, The Who and Pat Travers amongst their many.

As one can see, Bodhi's ever increasing popularity is not limited only to true connoisseur music loving fans; as Bodhi is also steadily gaining a significant amount of respect and recognition within the music and entertainment industry on both the performing end as well as the executive end, and is only due to vastly increase as time progresses. So what is secret attributed to the very fast rise of the band Bodhi? Three things...

1) The high quality of Bodhi's music that is both well performed and distinct due to equal parts of God given talent, combined with a great deal of dedication and hard work that all members of Bodhi put into writing and creating a great musical product with a very definitive edge.

2) The great deal of hard work and dedication put forth by Lead Vocalist and Bassist Brett Diaz towards managing and promoting the band. Brett is a high strung, non stop and devoted go getter when it comes to advancing the band's future towards their inevitable success. His own band, Bodhi is not his first time working behind the scenes in the music industry either; as according to Diaz, he has interned with Hardhead Management, (NY, NY), which is owned by Stefani Scamardo (Haynes), wife of legendary jam performer Warren Haynes; and is the management company that handles such renowned acts as Gov't Mule, John Popper Project and Dumpstaphunk amongst others. Diaz has also interned working for Doc McGhee, (Nashville), who is a well known music manager who has worked with such renowned acts as Bon Jovi, KISS and Mötley Crüe amongst others. Brett Diaz is currently working with J & R Adventures, (Boca Raton, Florida), which is the management company of prolific rock and blues Guitarist Joe Bonamassa.

3) The third element, though certainly not least that is attributed to the band Bodhi's profoundly swift rise to success in the music industry, IS those devoted fans of jam music who are indeed true connoisseurs of excellent music. It is after all, THE FANS that truly write the pages of music history and determine who will be jam's next major contender.

Bodhi (Self-Titled)

Photos

Bio

These four friends have known each other for some time. While studying music in college, they performed at Brett's senior recital last December and then began writing original tunes after finding an immediate chemistry.
Ross & Brett have known each other for 14 years and have been playing music together in various bands since then. Brett was introduced to Aaron in high school which opened up the path for many different people to come in the circle and mature musically.
College came with the three going to different schools. Brett met Jake in his first ensemble at FAU and they have been involved with a variety of projects ever since. Brett's recital was the culminating moment when the four started to put together their varied musical influences and really gel as a group.

Brett and Aaron share a passion for classic, driving Southern Rock (Allman Bros. Gov't Mule) and this influence provides the foundation for the overall band sound.
Ross studied Jazz in depth at the University of Miami and this influence (Coltrane, Herbie, Miles, and Grateful Dead) is felt in the harmonies and "different" sound the music possesses.
Jake brings an organic feel to the band. His influences, ranging from heavy metal to Philip Glass, provide the cohesiveness and natural Jam feel that the band tends to exemplify.
