"In the Pocket: Review: Bohemian Thought 'Magnificent Dyslexic'"

Anyone who describes themselves as a "poetic philosopher" makes me a little nervous. Mind you, anyone who uses "Bohemian Thought" as an artist name probably doesn't care a whole lot if he makes me nervous. Conquering nervousness is undoubtedly one of the first steps towards existing on a higher plane of being. Or something. Anyway, it turns out my nervousness is unfounded. Magnificent Dyslexic, the debut album from London-raised, Wellington-based singer and spoken word performer, Bohemian Thought, is a hugely enjoyable record. BT endeavours to channel Gil Scott-Heron and The Last Poets with deep, considered lyrical content - which is in itself a refreshing change for a local record. Seriously funky musical backing ranging from understated beatnik styles through bubbling afrobeat, future funk and soulful reggae comes courtesy of guests Mara TK and Myele Manzanza (Electric Wire Hustle), Lewis McCallum, Isaac Aesili and many others - including producer Brofessional. An accomplished debut. - David Carroll

Introducing bohemian thought

A new addition to the culture capital's colourful crown Wellington based Bohemian Thought emerges this month with his first single and video 'Seeker' coming from his forthcoming debut full length album 'Magnificent Dyslexic' to be released later this year.

A playful song with an allusion to a much deeper truth and wisdom expressed both lyrically and visually through the video filmed in Wellington and directed by Rollo Wenlock, Bohemian Thought inspires understanding and acceptance through his music which he has termed “true soul” music.

Ancestrally hailing from Nigeria, Bohemian, curiously enough is blessed with the gift of dyslexia which as a young adult saw him put music aside and instead carve himself a place within the IT industry in London - a world where his dyslexia slipped past almost unnoticed. Within this realm he thrived in one way, spiritually starving himself in others.

Had things gone slightly different, the story could have ended there, however, at some point during this grey plateau, he found words coming to him in the forms of songs. The arrival of these words unearthed previously disregarded feelings within Bohemian Thought which led him on a whirlwind journey and after a brief foray into the spoken word, theatre and poetry scenes in London he relocated to New Zealand in 2006.

A spoken word poet, singer, songwriter and percussionist (aka poetic philosopher) Bohemian connected with the local Wellington soul, funk, jazz and reggae scenes. After stints spent jamming with Batucada, Sam Manzanza & the Rhythm Africa Band and Olmecha Supreme, Bohemian Thought arrived at a place to develop his own songs with the assistance of Auckland producer Brofessional, The Urban Soul Orchestra (UK), studio engineer Benny Tones and a host of accomplished local musicians.

Essentially an exploration of freedom filtered through a dyslexic eye Bohemian Thought’s debut album 'Magnificent Dyslexic' is due for release in New Zealand in June 2011.
