"Benefit for homeless flood victims rocks the French Quarter"

Benefit for homeless flood victims rocks the French Quarter

Written By Josh Shirer

June 28, 2010

The flooding of Nashville in early May took its toll on many home and business-owners. It also devastated those who have neither jobs nor homes. On Saturday, May 29th, a local organization gave back through music and donations.

The French Quarter in East Nashville hosted a gala of bands Saturday in order to raise funds for the Bridge Ministry of Nashville, which among other things, devotes its time and efforts to assisting the homeless citizens relegated to the streets of Nashville. Beginning in 2004, the Bridge Ministry has been feeding hundreds of the homeless every Tuesday night underneath the Jefferson Street Bridge in downtown Nashville. Using volunteers, the organization brings in donated food, clothing, and toiletries and disperses them to those who are in need. The Ministry also provides music and a weekly guest speaker for those it benefits during their meal.

May 29th’s concert, however, helmed local Nashville artists willing to give up a Saturday night to raise money for those who the flood has hit worst. Headlining the show was band The Boogie Woogie Jesus Project (members Dave Beigert, Jim Bloodgood, Kelly Donovan, Brian Hinchliffe, Jennifer Hinchliffe, and Mike Waldron). Based out of Nashville, the BWJP was created in the Fall of 2009 with the mission of, playing for God and playing it loud.

With a healthy mix of musical collaboration, BWJP strung along a series of funk inspired rock. On songs such as “Looking for a Miracle” and a funky rendition of “I’ll Take You There,” it was hard to find any flaws in musicianship and even more difficult to find a note missed by the harmony heavy vocals. The number that brought down the house, however, was a soulful alliance with Abby Burke of Abby Burke and the Soul Catchers on a cover of “A Bridge Over Troubled Water.” The song displayed a passion for music and people through a rousing improvisation by Kelly Donovan and Ms. Burke which shook the small venue.

The benefit raised over $2000 dollars for the Bridge Ministry and rocked the French Quarter. Spectators and musicians alike could feel the power of the moment and the grace which will hold Nashville together after such a devastating tragedy.

Meet The Band: Mike Waldron

For the past 18 years, I have had the privilege of performing with some of the biggest names in country music. After playing in numerous bands in my home state of Michigan and attending The Guitar institute in LA, I moved to Nashville and quickly landed a job as lead guitarist with multi-platinum recording artist Martina McBride.

Since that auspicious debut I have not only toured the world, but has performed in several music videos and hundreds of high-profile TV appearances. These include multiple performances on the The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Late Night with Conan O’Brien, and The Today Show just to name a few.

In addition to extensive touring in the U.S., I have also toured Europe five times including the 1994 Garth Brooks world tour with McBride. My international resume also includes a 2003 USO tour to play for the troops in Kuwait and Qatar.

Since 2002, I have played lead guitar for multi-platinum, Grammy® Award winning recording artist Lee Ann Womack and have been her musical director since 2005.

I am involved in many facets of the music business. I am an in-demand studio musician regularly called upon to be session leader on recording sessions as well owner of a profitable, full-time project studio on Nashville’s famous “Music Row” and works with Nashville’s top songwriters and artists.

Meet The Band: Kelly Donovan

Having sung my first solo "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" at the age of 7 years old,I have been blessed with years of singing, performing and writing throughout the United States and beyond.

I have had the honor of recording over 15 solo and collaborate projects selling more then 1 million total copies nationwide. My most recent accomplishment has been the distinct honor of winning the 2007 International Songwriter of the Year with Solid Gospel for her Christmas song "An Angels Prayer" that was released nationwide in November 2007. Originally from Colorado, I call Nashville home and love to fill my days writing and producing at our studio, "Studio G", serving on the board for a new charter school in Nashville, working in and throughout our local community and hitting the stage with BWJP!

As for how I met these guys...It is amazing how God can work in and through things, including prison (ministry in this case). It is my honor to share the stage and ministry with The Boogie Woogie Jesus Project. The love of God, playing of fantastic music and forging of lifelong friends allows me the privilege of saying I have been a part of something great than myself....BWJP!

Meet The Band: Jim Bloodgood

Playing professionally at the age of 15, I toured various clubs throughout Northern California. My career made a substantial advance when I was called to play in the band Room With A View featuring Tiran Porter of The Doobie Brothers. We recorded numerous studio tracks and performed with several mainstream acts including, but not limited to, Dave Mason and The Doobie Brothers Reunion Tour.

After several years with Room With a View, fellow band members Christian Taylor, Nick Chetkovich and I branched off to form what has become Kurth & Taylor. Kurth & Taylor recorded and released 4 independent CDs and had original music featured and written into the production of General Hospital. The band was featured on General Hospital for 5 + years performing live and using original material as the characters “Eddie Maine and The Idle Rich”.

My career with RCA recording artist, Sara Evans began in September of 2000. Our tours have consisted of The George Strait Festival, as well as, the “Girls Night Out Tour” with Reba, Martina McBride, Jamie O’Neal, and Carolyn Dawn Johnson over the Summer of 2001. A highlight of our touring season was the Country Nights performances in Gstaad, Switzerland in September 2001. We are currently on tour with Kenny Chesney, Phil Vassar, and Carolyn Dawn Johnson.

Meet The Band: Brian Hinchliffe

I started my musical career playing guitar at age 16. In 1976 I lost two fingers on my left hand which challenged me to further develop my musical career and challenge to learn bass guitar. It was during this period that I began playing and opening concerts in the New England area for major artists as well as starting my recording career.
