Bow Arrow is the solo project of New Zealander Matt Scheurich, a talented musician who has performed as part of a variety of progressive rock and electronic acts. S Of An Aftermath is his reflections on a traumatic episode in his life-it was created while he was recovering from being attacked by tribesmen in the jungles of Papua New Guinea. The heavily distorted vocals on these synth heavy tracks create an ambiguous tone that is at times disorientating but always intriguing. Back in June our friend Matthew Scheurich was shot with a bow and arrow while living in the Papua New Guinean jungle. The attack made international news headlines. He’s now back living in Auckland, New Zealand, recovering from his traumatic experience. In an email today he said, “chest pains flare up from time to time”, but that his “lung capacity feels much better now.” Since his near-death experience Matt has been working on a new musical project, to help him deal with post-traumatic stress disorder. He’s titled it Bow Arrow and it’s very different from his previous work as rapper MC Stormtroopa and in punk band Damsels. Bow Arrow is a very gloomy project, full of rich electronic textures and dark motifs. There’s a lot of pain and trauma in the lyrics, with thundery echoes surrounding his voice. It’s got a dark, witch-house sound, similar to Salem, Nite Jewel and Chelsea Wolfe.

Bow Arrow is the new project from Matt Scheurich and one literally close to his heart as it was just two months ago that Scheurich narrowly escaped with his life after being shot in the chest and stomach by arrows in a brutal attack in Papua New Guinea.

Previously known as MC Stormtroopa, Scheurich is back in NZ recuperating and has released an album under the good humoured moniker to help pass the time. A New Zealand man shot through the chest with a bow and arrow in a remote Papua New Guinean jungle is turning his harrowing near-death experience into music under the name Bow Arrow.

Matthew Scheurich, 28, pulled two arrows from his torso as he and his 29-year-old girlfriend fled for their lives from the village of Suabi after the June attack.

Medical staff found one arrow had passed through his ribs, under his liver, through the wall of his stomach and stopped just short of his aorta.

He spent two weeks in and out of Cairns Base Hospital. Papua New Guinean police earlier this month arrested and charged 19-year-old tribesman Francis Neobia with attempted murder over the attack.

Amid his recovery from the physical and emotional scars left by the attack, Mr Scheurich recorded a seven-track electronic album.

A statement on the Bow Arrow bandcamp page said S Of An Aftermath was conceived in the Papua New Guinean jungle and composed and recorded in Australia and New Zealand "in the houses of generous people who have been helping me out while I recover".

Some of the dark, electronic songs seem to reference the attack.

Lyrics from the opening track Message include: "Thinking about a funeral procession, what a way to die naked. Calling all dreams. Lying down with unbuttoned seams. Breasts open, heaving ribbons of red. Thoughts escaping from a rip in the head."

Matt Scheurich, the man who was shot at by a tribesman in Papua New Guinea earlier this year with a bow and arrow (see this story from two days ago) is still recovering from his injuries and has returned home to New Zealand to recoup. He’s currently living in Auckland and has been busying himself making music while still healing his wounds. As you will have read, Matt formerly performed under the pseudonym MC Stormtroopa, performing Star Wars themed rap songs; he was also in punk band Demsels.

He is calling his new musical project Bow Arrow – and it’s dark, sombre witch-house electronica.
