"BOWER bows down to the ‘Queen of the Weekend’ on new song"

Nightlife draws out a smorgasbord of wacky characters – from the withering wallflower to the “it’s all good” guy who clearly hasn’t showered in weeks to the bodacious queen who commands the room with a dip and a flourish. Bower should know. He drinks in the effervescent sparkle of bright neons that fall in delicate, sharp patterns across a dive bar’s various clientele, and the work soaks in every trace of it. His new song “Queen of the Weekend,” premiering today, celebrates the queen in all her magnificence. “On a Friday night she’s a perfect storm / Meets her fake friends down on the boulevard / Little white lines, dressed to the nines, better run and hide,” he struts.

There is a slumbering femme fatale way about her, and once dusk descends on town, the darkness is hers to consume. “Well if you’ve got a death wish tonight / You can look into her eyes / Take your best shot, play her favorite song / Be the one to charm the viper’s heart / Once you get a taste, you’re in the deep end / Bow down to the Queen of the Weekend,” Bower tosses up a fistful of cosmic glitter, swirling in funkadelic bursts upon a chewy pop backdrop. He continues to sketch out the full extent of her unexplainable hypnotism on everyone who crosses her spellbound path, “She don’t slow down but everybody stops for her Friday through the weekend turn into a blur / She never goes to sleep till the bees get back to work.”

On the song’s musical vivacity, he writes to B-Sides & Badlands over email: “[The song’s] chic temperament carries the type of fun energy I like to share in my music,” he says. Now in Los Angeles, a promising talent in his own right, Bower combs his jazz studies background to offer a stylized bite to his work. His tapestry is polished, yet it nods to a bygone era, tethered to the ’80s but pushing ever forward into a futuristic soundscape. "Noise Pop Review: Amy Shark, BOWER, MILCK at The Independent, 2/21/18"

Last night’s performances were raw, emotional, and beautiful. You know that feeling you get when someone chooses to open up to you, sharing a personal experience that may have hurt them deeply, but also helped shape them into who they are? All of the performers chose to open themselves up to a room full of strangers, connecting us to each other with emotive lyrics and personal stories of the human heart – both in their song lyrics, and in the backstories while introducing the next song.

BOWER started the night, building momentum as they performed. The band gelled together really nicely, and had awesome chemistry onstage. Their lead guitarist was phenomenal, playing with ease and quiet passion, but they all held their own and produced a great sound.

Bower introduced the next song by asking the audience if they had ever caught themselves thinking about an ex, and wishing that they were thinking about you too. While everyone in the room sighed with memories and nodded, Bower looked around, took a beat, and then said knowingly “It’s a trap!” We all laughed as he launched into his musical rendition of those conflicted feelings. - Spinning Platters (by Natalia Perez)

"You Won't Want To Sleep On Bower's New Single"

A year removed from his debut EP, Bower is showing more vibe with his new single Sleepers. Based in LA, he is a singer-songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist who has spent much of the last few years touring in notable indie-pop bands. Sidestepping into his own music has been seamless, and he looks forward to releasing more of it over a promising 2019.

His new single Sleepers is an ode to low-key lovers. The kind of lovers who elect “Netflix and Chill” over “Makeup and Frills”. It’s a laid back portrait of two night owls staying home, entangled on the couch in a dreamlike state. “I’ve always been a homebody and being with someone who shares that preference is such a dangerously sweet spot to be in.”, Bower explains. The song’s warm vocals lay on a bed of swaggy drums, deep bass, and jazzy guitar. The production and musicianship are gritty yet precise. Bower refers to this as “intentional imperfection”, and it gives the song a unique personality. The track is filled with tasty details for those close listeners, but the overall simplicity and smoothness are what really set the mood and make it a jam. It’s a song you’ll want to replay over and over; a lullaby that bumps.

"Bower - Sleepers"

Bower is actually called Trent Bower (surprise) and is a singer-songwriter from (surprise # 2) Los Angeles. He learned to play the drums at an early age, so it was only logical that he began jazz studies in New Orleans after school.

After Bower had already played tours with artists such as Taylor Swift, Vance Joy and James Young , he decided for a solo career. I think the right decision. Last year released his rather mixed debut EP Rookie Card , with which he accompanied Amy Shark . No plan who that should be.

This year starts quite exciting for the newcomer, as he releases his new single Sleepers .

The neo-soul groove, which reminds me of Tom Misch and cohorts, was particularly popular with Sleepers . The drums have a good punch and the jazz chords on the guitar make for a certain ease. Add to that the dreamy details on the Rhodes piano and the lightened vocals. Just a super relaxed song to hang out. Of course you can also cast a spell on it or do other things. "Andrew Chats with Bower"

Bower is the moniker of Trent Bower: singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. After playing in bands in New Orleans and Los Angeles and touring the country as a drummer and bassist for artists like Amy Shark, Vance Joy and Taylor Swift, Bower is embarking on a career as a solo artist. He released his first solo EP, “Rookie Card,” last month. I caught up with Trent during a break from a celebratory ski trip in a sleepy Colorado mountain town. Here’s what he had to say about his new EP, and the process of going solo:

Andrew: Why did you name your EP “Rookie Card?”

Bower: I’ve always played sports —I’m a huge basketball fan, and I wanted to incorporate those passions into my music. A rookie card is something that really valuable, because you don’t know at the time what this person is gonna end up being… if they end up being a legend, their rookie card is their most valuable card. So I thought it would be cool as if to say, “who knows what this will turn into?”

Andrew: The EP has a very California feel to it. How do you find the relationship between music and place coming out in your songwriting?

Bower: Every place I’ve lived has always offered me something new and always something amazing. When I was in New Orleans, I really ate it up, and I became obsessed with jazz and stuff like that… New Orleans still felt like home, even after a couple years in LA, but I knew LA was a place I wanted to be — I hadn’t set my roots yet. I started touring with Vance Joy and Taylor Swift within the first three months of moving to LA, so I was always on the road for the first year and a half that I lived there, and that was a world in itself. After a while, though, I realized: I want to do my own music. And if I don’t stop touring and dig in now, then it’ll never happen. It was really hard for me to give up the touring life, but in order to reach the place where I wanted to be, I had to. So in 2016, I said “this year, I’m staying in town, building my own network, and just writing to figure out what I wanted my project to sound like.” This is how I dug my roots into LA. I’ve always loved California —I’m a surfer, I like hot weather and being outdoors, so I always kind of wanted to end up there… it felt like an inevitable landing place. Culturally, I feel so at home here, and that was just so on my mind in the process of writing this EP, so it snuck its way into the music pretty hard.

Andrew: Speaking of Los Angeles, one of the catchiest songs on the record is “Rain in LA.” Can you tell me a little bit about where that song came from?

Bower: “Rain in LA” is about a girl that I met when I was touring with Vance Joy. During our show in Norfolk, VA, I was making eye contact with her in the crowd, and I could tell we sort of had a vibe. After the show, I actually ran into her at one the local bars, and we really hit it off and had this amazing connection — it turns out she was from Akron [Ohio], and had come out all the way to Virginia just to catch Vance Joy. Well, we exchanged contact info and started texting a lot. We would hang out in Ohio when I was passing through there on tour, and we started getting really close. We both had strong feelings for each other, but because I lived in L.A., and she lived in Ohio, it just wasn’t a practical relationship… I had to cut it off and kind of say, “let’s slow things down and keep it as friends,” and she agreed.

When I got back to LA in January of 2016, we had all this rain, which LA never gets. Having grown up in Miami where it rains all the time, I miss the rain when I’m in LA, and that cozy feeling of waking up in the morning and it’s raining outside, so you just sleep in…now having all this rain made me think of how much I’m usually missing the rain, which made me think about how much I was missing this girl.

It’s funny, that song actually started out as a total ballad. I recorded it as a demo with just guitar and vocals, and I really struggled with whether i want to record it as big as it is. Eventually I went to some of the musicians that I work with, and said “these are the songs with just guitar and vocals, let’s flesh them out with some instrumentation.” I did the drums, my friend Sam did the guitar, other friends were on bass and keys. We have a chemistry, having worked together in the past. I still felt it needed something extra, so I left it for a month, came back, and realized that what I needed was horns. I had a few friends from New Orleans that have a horn trio called The Naughty Professor, so when they came through L.A. on tour, I had them play on the track. Sam helped me write out the horn part, which they busted out over a couple days in the studio without ever having actually heard the song. Horns are so difficult go get sounding right, but these guys are so familiar with each other that it just worked.

Andrew: How is recording as a solo artist different from recording in a band?

Bower: I get the chance to try out a bunch of different things. A lot of people have been giving me feedback on what their favorite song is, and it’s so spread out. I like that, because all these songs really are unique. I wanted this EP to have a really consistent sound, but stylistically, I think all four songs are pretty drastically different. I wanted to spread it out and make it diverse because over the last six years, I’ve been doing different styles with so many different people. Now that I’m solo, the hardest part was choosing where I want to go stylistically.

Andrew: You refer in your press release to the importance of musicianship, and the value of playing an instrument. Could you talk about how that thought process went into the EP?

Bower: I had a trio for a while called “The Rusty Boys.” We were a local LA band who would do old school funk and rock n roll covers — three-hour-long gigs, four times a month. After a while, we became such a tight unit… I really wanted to capture that on the EP. I love electronic music, but I felt that for this EP, I wanted to play to my strengths. I started out as a drummer, and I played drums in this band with other really good musicians. I thought “this already sounds good, so why not?” You’re hearing less and less of that these days, so I thought it would be good to go away from the grain for a bit. With “Rookie Card,” there are modern elements, but I wanted it to have a timeless feel. In the future, I definitely see myself going more in the electronic direction, maybe going more minimal, playing around with that ethereal production… but for this one, I wanted to go to my roots, and set a precedent for myself as a solo artist. Also, I didn’t have a producer, so I had to do it on my own… I wanted to make something that sounded like me.

Andrew: What instruments do you play and when did you start playing them?

Bower: I started off on drums when I was 10 or 11. My dad played, so he put me on to them once I could reach the pedals! I did concert band at school… I added the guitar in 9th grade. I didn’t dive too heavily into it because I was focusing on drums, but I knew I wanted to write music on guitar. When i graduated high school, I realized I want to sing and play guitar, so I formed a reggae band with a few friends. Once I was in college and I was getting into jazz, funk & jamming, I wanted to get back to the drums, so I dispersed that band and moved to New Orleans for grad school — and dived into the drums there.

I also had to learn piano for part of my grad school curriculum. I knew how it worked, but hadn’t put the time in to master it before. Then when I got the gig playing bass with Vance Joy, I hadn’t actually played bass in a band before, so I had to learn… I had three months to master it before heading out on tour, so that was pretty intense. That tour took me away from the drums, and I was nervous that once I got back to the drums I’d have forgotten them. But really, it made me so well-rounded. I’m not “Trent Bower: drummer,” I’m “Trent Bower: artist/musician.” I didn’t want to brand myself as just a drummer guy. So after that tour, I decided I wanted to get back to songwriting. I’ve got all this music I want to get out….when i got back to LA, I just started writing.

Andrew: Is there any artist you listened to growing up and thought, “I’ve gotta become a musician?”

Bower: Oh yeah, totally. For me, music has been this whole lifelong journey, I’ve always been so obsessed with it. Every four or five years, I hit a new phase, where i’m inspired by different artists. The Beach Boys and The Beatles were the first things I gravitated to, cause they were CDs from my dad’s collection…I think everyone gets into the parents their music like before they find stuff on their own. In 3rd and 4th Grade, it was Will Smith, Backstreet Boys, *NSYNC, Britney Spears, Biggie, Puff Daddy…I grew up in Miami, where rap and pop were everywhere. I actually played “All My Life” by K-Ci & Jojo for my girlfriend in the 4th grade talent show… she was so embarrassed.

In middle school, it was all about punk rock. Green Day, Blink-182, Sum 41… growing up and starting to play in bands, guys like Travis Barker really inspired me. Once I got to high school, I started getting into ska and reggae… once I discovered Sublime, that took over. I learned to play guitar and sing because of Bradley Nowell. I would go home every day and play Sublime songs. He and i have a similar range, so I felt comfortable singing his songs —I felt like my voice identified with his melodies.In college, I started getting into funk and jam bands like Snarky Puppy, and neo-soul like Erykah Badu and D’Angelo…that’s when I started to do funk & jazz.

For this EP, I felt like I was drawing on every influence from my whole life. This was the first time I took a really holistic approach… I started out just making something that I wanted to hear. I was really digging the new Haim record when it came out, and I definitely finagled a bit of their style into the record… I connect to everything now, in a weird way. Sometimes I wish I was a little more specific, but now I find myself liking at least something about everything I listen to—which isn’t a bad problem to have, I guess. - Renaissance People Music


Rookie Card (EP) 2018



Bower is a singer-songwriter/producer based in Los Angeles, CA. Born and raised in Miami, he was constantly surrounded by tropical rhythms and dance music. Naturally, he gravitated towards the drums at an early age but would go on to learn guitar, bass, and piano. Growing up, he filled most of his time with music and surfing. Before moving to L.A., he spent three years studying Jazz in New Orleans. 

During his first few years in LA, Bower toured as a musician with notable pop and indie artists such as Taylor Swift, Vance Joy, Amy Shark, and Jaymes Young before sidestepping into his original project. In 2018, he released his debut EP, Rookie Card and supported Amy Shark on the California leg of her World Tour. 2019 followed with new singles Sleepers and Won’t Be Long as well as shows in NYC and Miami. In early 2020 Bower headlined his first international show in Melbourne, AUS and put out his single Queen of the Weekend. He spent the rest of the year behind the scenes writing and producing his next EP. Now he’s back with a new single, Phantom Feelings, and more on the way.

Having relentlessly explored different styles and philosophies, Bower is proving to be one of LA's most capable up and coming artists. He's a multi-instrumentalist and producer obsessed with weaving pieces of the old into the new. Elements from each chapter of his musical journey combine to create something that is unique yet familiar, classic yet current.
