Boxcar Figaro is an acoustic duo/trio specializing in original, songs that are catchy, interesting and solidly crafted and performed.

Biography

Victor DesRoches has been writing and performing songs for two decades. A West Coast native, he has lived in Alaska, Washington, Arizona, and many places in California. He has worked as a commercial fisherman, shipping and receiving clerk, security guard, electro-plater, welder, small engine mechanic, pipefitter, art instructor, newsletter editor, English teacher, graphic artist, writer, photographer and journalist (and worked in retail for one day). Along the way, he managed to earn a masters degree in creative writing and learned to play guitar. He combines those skills and experiences to write songs that are personal but accessible, often quirky, and in a strange way moving. His songs are built with catchy melodies that make them sound deceptively simple.

Garrett Jones plays lead guitar with a deft touch, finding just the right balance between tasty fills and the spaces each song needs to breathe. He also sings backing vocals.

Percussionist Sam Nassar keeps Boxcar Figaro on time and upbeat and adds backing vocals.

Living in the Snow

Living in the Snow - ©Victor DesRoches, Fresno, CA

I’ve got a glass globe on my desk
Tiny town inside
Someone gave it to me long ago
Turn it over and turn it back
And everyone in this town
Finds themselves living in the snow

Living in snow, living in the snow
Living in snow, living in the snow
Where a warm heart can slice
Through the ice
And let the beauty show
Of a world in white
Living in the snow

A friend of mine
Married an artist from Thailand
She’s been here about a year or so
She’s seen the deserts and seen the redwoods
But still she hasn’t seen
The beauty living in the snow

Living in snow, living in the snow
Living in snow, living in the snow
Where a warm heart can slice
Through the ice
And let the beauty show
Of a world in white
Living in the snow

Swirling flakes come twirling down
White covering up the brown
But under ice, love can be found, I know
Living in the snow

California dreaming of a Minnesota tan
I’ve got 800 miles to go
But when I reach Mankato
And finally take your hand
We’re going to be living in the snow

Living in snow, living in the snow
Living in snow, living in the snow
Where a warm heart can slice
Through the ice
And let the beauty show
Of a world in white
Living in the snow

Wooden Hands - (Pinocchio's Song)

Written By: Victor DesRoches

Wooden Hands (Pinocchio’s Song) - ©Victor DesRoches, Fresno, CA

With wooden hands I touched my father’s hands
After he cut me from a tree
On wooden feet I stood before him
In all sincerity
He only wanted his own children
But all he got was me

And in my heart of twisted grain,
I still feel his pain
How the longing of this life
Forced his hand to knife
Where dreams of blood and bone can be set free

With wooden eyes I don’t see clearly
Only shadows, shapes and blurs
And wooden lips make speaking awkward and confused
Especially with honest words
But wooden ears make up for everything
When I hear the song of birds

‘Cause in my heart of twisted grain
I become a tree again
And roots that ran so deep
Sing my pain to sleep
Where dreams of blood and bone can be set free

With wooden arms I’m reaching out to you
Though I don’t really understand
How to make it from the belly of this whale
Back to solid land
But in the darkness when you touch me
And take my wooden hands

This heart of twisted grain
Pumps love through wooden veins
And a puppet without strings
Becomes a boy (with wings)
Whose dreams of blood and bone can be set free.

Down You Go

Down You Go
©Victor DesRoches, Fresno, CA

Jump into the river with your pockets full of stones
Straight to the bottom, down you go
Try to ride a steer from your house into town
And while we’re laughing, down you go

Things out your way been getting pretty strange
Your friends and family are thinking you could use a change
Everybody’s worried about you, don’t you know
Watching, as down you go

Twenty years of hangovers must be getting old
Four ibuprofen, down you go
This paycheck’s bag of weed, waiting to get rolled
Then up in smoke and down you go

You think that you still got it in control
But you’ve been crapping out about every time you roll
Everybody’s worried about you, don’t you know
Watching as down you go

Down you go
And down you go
Free-fall’s something different than just going with the flow
Down you do
And down you go
It’s not the drop that gets you, it’s what you hit below

Take the curve at 60 when the size says 35
Over the guardrail, down you go
Try to fight the cops who are making sure you’re still alive
A busted nose and down you go

The judge is telling you that things have got to change
Your living situation’s just been rearranged
We’ll be breathing easier
For fifteen months or so
Down you go
We’ll be breathing easier
For fifteen months or so
Down you go
