Might As Well Be Guilty

Written By: Brad Fletcher

I was dousing my woes
at a watering hole
where I go to do soul searchin’.
There I asked some guy
if he knew why
men are poor at girl learnin’.
So for a shot and a beer
he was glad to hear
about my girlfriend back home
who’s always thinkin’
I’m lyin’ and cheatin’
every time I leave her alone.

What my new friend said
was way ahead
of anything I’d ever heard.
His advice about cheatin’
was worth repeatin’
for anyone willing to learn.
So I stood on my chair
and drank my beer
as I toasted the rowdy crowd.
It was a beautiful thing
as we began to sing
his words of wisdom out loud.

(chorus)
If I’m gonna take the heat for
the things I didn’t do
then I might as well be guilty
by makin’ those words come true.
So tonight I’m on a mission
to get the wrong things done
cuz I might as well be guilty
and have a little fun.

Well, my new friends advice
was enough to entice
the word to spread around.
By half past ten
we started again,
now with the whole dang town.
So I stood on my chair
and drank another beer
as I toasted the rowdy crowd.
It was a beautiful thing
as we began to sing
his words of wisdom out loud

(chorus)

The toastin’ and singin’
and too much drinkin’
lasted nearly all night long.
I don’t recall
who I slept with at all
or the words to my new song.
My stomach hurt
and my head was poundin’
as my heart was filled with shame.
I swore right then
to quit my drinkin’
and to never cheat again.

So I went to the bar
to pick up my car
and apologize to my friends.
But my mouth went ajar
when I saw from afar
it was too late to make amends.
My girl was there
doin' a shot and a beer
with the guy who started my mission.
The message was clear
as I could overhear
him teachin’ the very same lesson.

(bridge)
Now the two of them
are in Key West as he sings …

If you’re gonna take the heat for
the things he did to you
then you might as well be guilty
of doin’ the same things too.
So forever we’re on a mission
to get the wrong things done
cuz we might as well be guilty
and have a little fun.

Yeah, we might as well be guilty
and have a little … fun.

My Bye-Passed Heart

Written By: Brad Fletcher

The Chambers of my lonely heart
are filled with seeds of doubt.
How could your love reside in there
then suddenly move out?
My life before we ever met
was not just lived in vain.
It prepared me for the love you gave
But not for this much pain.

(chorus)
Like a boat without a rudder
or a bird without a song,
like a child without a mother
I'm lost now that you’re gone.
Like a surgical procedure
removing a vital part,
perhaps leaving me
was right for you
but it left a bye-passed heart.

The mystery which robs my sleep
and darkens all my days
is how two people meant to be
could go their separate ways.
It doesn’t seem at all quite right
our hearts would only pass,
we weren’t just ships crossing at night,
you vowed our love would last.

(chorus)

Time has passed but I still ask why
you moved on almost as though
your heart was blocked and said goodbye
while mine still said hello.
I hear you’re in a better place
while pursuing whatever you dream
but if you could look into my eyes
you’d see loss of self esteem.

(chorus)

Some of the things you said and did
were signs of a very lost soul.
I begged your forgiveness for
what I caused which took a toll.
But after all we both took the vow
“til death does us apart”.
So it’s your turn now to apologize for
bye-passing my broken heart.

(chorus)

Perhaps your leaving was right for you
but it left a bye-passed heart.

Beyond The Gates

Written By: Brad Fletcher

She missed a turn along the way
and lost her path in life.
I tried my best to help her
when her X chose another wife.
But the years of abuse and suffering
had already taken a toll,
so she ran off and got re-married
to drugs and alcohol.

(chorus)
… So I held her hand and said…

Beyond the gates
there’s a better place
awaiting those who choose
to face the lord
and accept his grace
so lay down your sword or lose.

Cheap wine as a second husband
of course eventually failed.
Spousal abuse and a felony
was enough to get her jailed.
The wages of war upon her body
were the same as for her soul.
She simply couldn’t neglect either one
without digging a deeper hole.

(chorus)

Her lonely days of prison life
were filled with discontent,
as she spent her time just thinking about
the wine and money she’d spent.
The dreams she chased so long ago
had really just been bait
to the sweet temptations of this world
and the things she loved to hate.

(chorus)

And so my friend did suffer alot
‘til she finally accepted the Lord.
Only then could she finally understand
about layin’ down her sword.
Now she is free from all she’s done
and all the things she hates,
as she awakens every morning
just thinking beyond the gates.

(bridge)
Beyond the gates there’s a better place
awaiting those who choose
to face the Lord and accept his grace
so lay down your sword or lose.
Free yourself from all you’ve done
and all the things you hate
by waking bravely every morning
just thinking beyond the gates.

Without You Another Day

Written By: Brad Fletcher

I think about the life we had
while growing our family tree.
I think about the things we did
just the kids and you and me.
Our family was as beautiful
as any one could be.
I miss those days of memory makin’,
just the kids and you and me.

(chorus)
Who could have known
before God called you home
I’d ever be without you?
Who could have known
when you left for His throne
part of me would go there too?
Who could have known
this man of stone
would cry and hope and pray
for the strength and the courage
to stay in this world
without you another day?

I think about the life you had
always filled with joy and zest.
I think about the loving way
you brought out my very best.
Our kids are blessed to have a mom
who loves them eternally.
I miss those days of memory makin’
just the kids and you and me.

(chorus)

They say you’re in a better place
where everything is pure.
They say that I should trust the Lord
who’s undying love is sure.
They say I should be thankful for
my blessings however many.
But I must confess I’d trade my mess
for what you have already.

(chorus)

(bridge)
Who could have known
this man of stone
couldn’t live without you
… another day?

Toe Rings

Written By: Brad Fletcher

I spent most of my days
just searching for
clues about my life.
I had no idea
where I came from,
who’s my daddy or his wife.
I spent most of the money
I ever made
trying to find my family,
but the only ones found
above the ground
were my girlfriend and me.

(chorus)
She’s the one who taught me
much of what I know,
not to sweat the little things
which are out of my control.
She’s the one who said it’s wrong
to tell a little white lie,
and that there’s more to a person
than can be seen with a naked eye.
I thank her each and every day
for teaching me these things.
I love everything about this girl,
even her little toe rings.

Now I spend my waking hours
tryin’ to figure out our life.
I’ve no idea where we’re going
or if she’ll ever be my wife.
I spend most of my time
just thinking of rhymes
and things I’d like to say,
but the only words that come to mind
are will you love me too someday?

(chorus)

I’ve given up the days of looking
for things which can’t be found.
I’ve given up on searching my past
as though I was a bloodhound.
Instead my days are filled with thoughts
of how beautiful life will be
when the day finally comes
and she says yes
when I ask her to marry me.

(chorus)

(bridge)
Yes, I thank her each and every day
for teaching me these things,
about life and love and inner beauty
and even about …
... wedding toe rings.

My Smilin' Heart

Written By: Brad Fletcher

I moseyed on down
to the local playground
just to think about my life.
It’s been full of wild swings,
slides and other things
such as pain and too much strife.
My thoughts teeter totter
‘bout things they shouldn’t oughter
as I ponder a little while.
But when I think about you
and the things we love to do
my heart begins to smile.

(Chorus)
I’ve been searchin’ for that feelin’
that comes when my believin’
all my dreams are coming true.
I’ve been waitin’ for a while
for my heart to finally smile
like it does when I’m with you.
You’re everything I’ve wanted
and more than what I need
to make my life complete.
So keep on touchin’,
smilin’ and a rockin’
my heart with every beat.

The playground thing
has come and gone again
many times throughout the years.
It’s just a place to land
to put my feet into the sand
while I wipe away my tears.
My dreams and my prayer
all seem to disappear
every night when I’m alone.
But hope comes alive
and there’s sparkle in my eyes
when you call me on my telephone.

Chorus

They say that much of life
is like a merry-go-round
because we end right where we start.
Well that may be the case
but I have found my place
now that we are rarely apart.
My days are filled with joy
as we watch the girls and boys
having fun in playground sand,
as they swing and slide,
jump and twirl and glide
while we walk hand in hand.

Chorus (x2)
