"Am I Superman Yet?"

There is an abundance of radio-play songs with Superman in the title. Some have been bigger hits than others. “Superman” and all its connotations bring a great many devices, which can be parlayed, into various lyrical threads. “Am I Superman Yet” by Brad Street shoots straight from the hip making the direct relation to the spandex wearing crime fighter.

“Am I Superman yet? / Do you think I can fly? / Can I leap tall buildings in a single bound? / Can I look at you with my x-ray eyes?” (chorus)

The song takes on a jangley pseudo-rasta beat, which bounces nicely along. Its peppy flavor and catchy harmonized sing-a-long chorus creates a great party song and an all around stuck-in-your-head tune like a great commercial jingle. With clean guitar, organ, and drums sticking to their places the song is competently wrapped into place. The vocals fit in nicely to the groove with their own gritty presence.

The two sets of verse lyrics remind me of those of Bare Naked Ladies or Spin Doctors (also with a Superman song). They are straightforward, fun and tinged with some pop-culture references.

“I remember way back in the day everything was so cut and dry / All day long we'd play, and dream of how we'd set the world on fire / You were bound for fame greater than Madonna / Maybe be the best ballerina that the world had ever seen / I was gonna fly a fast jet-fighter / Maybe be a superhero like in cartoons and my dreams” (verse 1)

“Am I Superman Yet” is a fun song. It’s darn catchy and commercially viable. Some minor production tweaking could bring out all the clean sonic textures at work here, especially at the guitar solo area and the chorus harmonies. It’s not the greatest song you’ll ever hear but its strong enough to get the party started and offer you a good time three minute ride.

Having taken a listen to other tunes served up by Brad Street I’d say that there’s a lot to offer and it’s only a matter of time till its being served up in mass quantities.

Bio

Homegrown in Virginia Beach, Virginia, Brad currently performs 4 to 7 nights each week promoting his current "Live Acoustic" CD as well as the upcoming album "Stuck With Grey". Brad and his band have shared the stage with acts such as .38 Special, Trick Pony, and 80's rockers Modern English.

Since quitting the traditional "day job" in 2002 to pursue music full time, Brad has never looked back. Fueled with passion and energy, his live performances dare you to stay in your seat. Witty banter and self-deprecating humor between songs help define him as a true entertainer and not just another musician.

His all-request solo acoustic shows allow audiences to choose from a list of 200 cover songs from popular country, rock, alternative, reggae and rap artists. The original songs are as varied as the influences that inspired them. From country ballads to high energy punk rockers, the music crosses the lines and breaks the rules. Described by one fan as "Bruce Springsteen meets the Ramones", the songs are as thoughtful as they are energetic.
