With a vibrant vintage sound that could easily have been heard at a 1930’s speakeasy or 1950’s jazz club, Boston-based vocalist Brandi Maxam prefers to blend classic sounds with distinctive freshness. Maxam’s voice ranges from light and rhythmic, to powerful and poignantly soulful – a perfect sound for a repertoire of sultry ballads (aka “torch songs”) and swinging up-tempo tunes.

Maxam is the first to admit, her unique vocal style is inspired by an extensive list of legendary greats.

“I definitely try to find a balance in my own style between the emotive, almost jagged, approach of Billie, and the sweet smooth energy of Ella,” she explains. “I also enjoy and borrow some of my style from modern singers of other genres, such as Mayra Andrade and even Freddie Mercury.”

So what’s Maxam’s plan for the future? Other than pleasing crowds of true jazz buffs, she hopes to acquaint a new generation to the genre.

“Maybe it's just wishful thinking, but I notice a lot of old-school jazz playing in businesses and commercials; even some 1920's styles finding their way into fashion,” she says. “I would really like to be a part of that movement if it's happening, and introduce my generation to a fresh take on that old music.”
