"Indie Focus - Brandon Rashad"

Tell us about where you are from and how you got to this position today.
I am a Houston based singer/songwriter. I am 24 years young and have just released my first EP entitled “Love” and will soon release my next EP in August. I am an unsigned artist working full time and recording/performing on my free time whenever and wherever I can.

Tell us more about the current song you are promoting to everyone.
Addiction is a love song that I wrote to my partner, when I wrote it we just celebrated our one year anniversary so naturally I was excited. Addiction came together rather easily, everything kind of fell into place after I got the first verse out.

Tell us about one of the hardest challenges you had to face in the industry?
Because I am an independent artist and I’m essentially just starting out in this industry a lot of times it’s really hard for me to book shows because my following is still growing.

What was one of the biggest set backs in your career and how did you bounce back?
To date I have not had any major set backs in my career, any obstacle that I encounter has been relatively easy to overcome.

What are some things artists need to be careful of?
Not knowing the ins and outs of the music business. Especially for those, like myself, trying to start on your own. I am constantly researching, reading and asking questions to industry professionals so that I know what’s going on, what to expect and have a better idea of how to navigate my career.

What suggestions do you have for other artists like yourself?
My only suggestion would be to do your research. Know your information before you call to try and book a show. For example, it will not benefit you as an r&b singer to book a show that is primarily for a bluegrass crowd. Booking the right shows and being able to market yourself effectively is essential for your success as an independent artist.

What is one of your favorite ways to promote yourself and your music?
My personal favorite way is through my Twitter account because I get direct contact with fans of my music. They can tell me what they like, what they don’t like, and if they want to hear me cover a song all they need to do is ask and I’ll do it. I also enjoy using music blogs, they are the source that most people go straight to for new music and news. So if I’m able to be featured on a popular blog my fan base will benefit greatly.

Where can people visit you?
You can “like” me on Facebook at: www.facebook.com/brandosays. Once you “like” my page you have access to download my 4 original songs and you’ll be in touch with all of my updates for shows and new music. - WWS Magazine

Bio

I am an openly gay Houston based singer/songwriter. I've just released a single called "Sorry" - I'm told it reminds people of Ne-Yo or an old school Usher and has good R&B roots, but we hope you'll have a chance to decide for yourself. I've had a some successes recently, including:

- An interview with WWS online Magazine (July Issue)
- Playing for HEart & Soul Vol. 44, University of Houston's
- NAACP Talent Show, Cullen's LIVE! Music Showcase, and Urban Outfitters Open Mic - College Night.
- Internet radio airplay
