Biography

Brave Young Lion is an alternative/indie-rock quartet from Denton, TX who released their debut EP Same Old Game in the summer of 2013 & are close to releasing their newest EP 'Bleeding Knees' in late-summer of 2015.

"Bleeding Knees' was recorded at Redwood Studios in Denton. All songs were produced & engineered by Joey McClellan (of Midlake/Israel Nash) & McKenzie Smith (of Midlake/St. Vincent). Mastering done by Kim Rosen @ Knack Mastering in New York. The 1st single "Girls" was debuted on the Local Ticket (96.7FM in Dallas) on June 7th, & available everywhere online now.

Same Old Game was also recorded at Redwood - which Joey & McKenzie founded in 2012. Redwood has been responsible for a multitude of great local releases since it's inception including bands like: The Orbans, Sarah Jaffe, Seryn, Chambers, etc. It was engineered and mixed by the wonderful Jordan Martin, and mastered at Crystal Clear Sound in Dallas.

The single "122A" made its radio debut June 2nd, 2013 on The Local Edge with Mark--a weekly show on Dallas rock station KDGE 102.1 The Edge. The entirety of the EP was officially released on June 11th, 2013. Later in the year it was named to DJ Mark Schectman's Top 10 Local Album Releases of the Year. It came it at #6 and was the only EP on the list.

Within the 1st few weeks it received great press both locally & nationally:

-"Same Old Game is some of the sharpest local rock Ive heard recently. They roar out of the gate with the fantastic 122A, and proceed to maintain a breakneck pace over the next four tracks. Its fabulous, kinetic stuff, and will have you itching to see the band live." ---Preston Jones of the Ft. Worth Star-Telegram

-The entire album is an exemplary piece of quality craftsmanship that demonstrates the commitment and natural raw talent embodied by the band. Its hard to get more infectious than the hook-filled Same Old Game. If you haven't had a chance to bust out some dance moves in front of your bedroom mirror lately, here's your chance. A five minute listen to this album and you wont be able to do anything else."---Obscure Sound

-"The most powerful thing Same Old Game has going on, besides the excellent drumming and the versatility of the guitar players, is how it cannot be easily pigeonholed. The contents within the music won't confuse or anger but accommodate and please. It's tough to skirt the genre lines of rock music without falling into one completely. To do it on five songs and manage to sound unique on every one? That's walking on coals, and Brave Young Lion emerge with cool feet."--- The Equal Ground

-"There was an instant connection when listening to each track on this impressive little EP. This connection is really hard to find. But when you find it, or rather, it finds you, it really hits the spot."---We All Want Someone to Shout For

-The Indie-Verse, which is a radio-station/blog owned by CBS in Dallas selected Brave Young Lion as one of their new local favorites.

2014 found BYL's continued growth in the precision & energy of their live show, while also creating a song that is used as a weekly open for The Norm Hitzges Show on Sportsradio 1310 The Ticket. The ladder part of the year saw them bringing new material back to Redwood to track for an upcoming EP release during the first part of 2015. It's being produced by both Joey McClellan & McKenzie Smith with Smith also talking on mixing duties.

The BYL mission is to play energy-filled live shows that people walk away from telling their friends how much fun they had. "It is simply catchy rock and roll that will be stuck in your head the next morning"-Pegasus News

Major influences include: The Strokes, Vampire Weekend, The Killers, Arctic Monkeys, The Vaccines, and Kings of Leon.

122A

Written By: Rico Turrubiarte,Spencer Turrubiarte,Hunter Cannon,Brian Shovlin, Brian Shovlin

Everybody wants the answers. No one wants the truth.
If you're gonna ask these questions, what am I to you?
I've seen the other side dear. That's where skies are grey.
If you're gonna leave tomorrow, then I'll leave today.

But if you're gonna leave here I don't know what I can do about it
I cannot stay tomorrow night.
It has to end or make it right.

Everybody wants the reasons why they can't break free.
If you're gonna ask yourself that, what's on your TV?
I've seen the other side dear. There our shirts are grey.
If you're gonna leave tomorrow then I might just stay.

But if you're gonna leave here I don't know what I can do about it.
I cannot stay tomorrow night. It has to end or make it...

Nooo when I say that you're leaving and you said whyyyy
cuz I want you to stay.
And you said nooo cuz I've been here forever and I said whyyyy can't I wait here all day?

When you said....

Whoa ooh ooh ooh oh o whoa oh oh... Whoa ooh ooh oh whoah oh oh oh! (x3)

Ebbs & Flows

That is just the way it goes
You like the ebbs, I like the flows
There is a point where we disagree
You got to shop a pedigree

You wanted it but you let it go so you'll never know, no you'll never know (never know)
Anything that the future holds, that future holds, that the future hold (future holds)
Everything in the palm of your hand, everything that you used to know (used to know)
Everything that you wish you did not know...

Wait, if you wait, if you wait for too long
I'll be gone and you'll know that it's over
I disagree but the life that you lead is a waste of my time so I'm gone

That is just the way it seems
You got the hopes, I got the dreams
There is a place where we used to meet
Now it's just a legacy

You wanted it but you let it go so you'll never know, no you'll never know (never know)
Anything that the future held, that the future held, that the future held (future held)
Everything in the palm of your hand, everything that you used to know (used to know)
Everything that you wish you would have done...

Wait, if you wait, if you wait for too long...
I'll be gone and the fight will be over
You disagree but the life that you lead is a waste of my time
so I'm gone

Wait, if you wait, if you wait for too long...
I'll be wrong and the fight will be over
You disagree and you'll try to compete
For the sake of your voice make it wait

Bodies/Hours

Written By: Rico Turrubiarte,Spencer Turrubiarte,Brian Shovlin,Hunter Cannon, Hunter Cannon

Tae kwon do, the pain in your hands
Elevator songs make her dance
I sleep all day and wake up to friends
It's gonna hurt but I can't resist

We're walking together but we'll end up a part
Laredo bus stop...Elm, Oak, or Bernard

We don't know where we are going so we don't know what we've been missing (x2)

There I sit just like a fool
I read your blog then walked to school
You moved away to just escape
from all of that relation decay

We're piecing together all the bodies and hours
There's a note on the fridge and the za is devour

We don't know where we are going so we don't know what we've been missing (X2)

Bodies/Hours
Cities/Towers
Vases/Flowers
Heroes/Cowards
Sweet and then sour
Weakness/Power
We are just slaves to the bodies and hours.

(repeat)

Walking together but we'll end up apart at a Laredo bus stop...Elm, Oak, or Bernard.
We're piecing together all the bodies and the hours
There's a note on the fridge and the za is devoured.

Same Old Game

I'm not the same boy that you used to know
everybody talks about us like I shouldn't go
oh but I know now that it's all the same
everything that you will try will be erased

whew ew ew ew....ew ew ew ew
whew ew ew ew...ew ew ew ew

I used to hope that I wouldn't wake
I thought that in the future people knew their stuff
oh but I know now that it's all the same
any decade that you might have ever came

whew ew ew ew....ew ew ew ew
whew ew ew ew...ew ew ew ew
and now I know we can't be changed cuz in the end we're all the same

I used to think that everything was good
I never thought that evil lived in my neighborhood
until I met you that's when it changed
everything that you try will be erased

whew ew ew ew....ew ew ew ew
whew ew ew ew...ew ew ew ew
and now I know we can't be changed cuz in the end we're all the same
and all you dooooo is just complain but in the end we're all the same.

Hold on, hold on...This might be the end
Taiwan Gucci bags, umbrellas, and St. John's t-shirts
You, You're like the wave cuz your friends are thugs and shooting drugs up in to their veins
You're hooking up with all those scrubs, their memberships to country clubs
What is it that your father does?
Perpetuate nomadic love.

Doze off! It is mid-semester and weekends, weaken.
Wake up! There's no Gatorade and your bed is, empty.

You're used to the pain
cuz the guys you thought were nice and stuff are acting insane
You're hooking up will all those scrubs, their memberships to country clubs
What was it that your father does?

You're hooking up with all those scrubs
Their memberships to country clubs
What was it that your father does? Perpetuate nomadic love.

Perpetuate nomadic love
Perpetuate nomadic love
Perpetuate nomadic love
Perpetuate nomadic looovvveeee
