"Brazos Valley Boys Continue to Have Ties to Jazz"

What do you say about a band that is so rich in history? You talk facts...
The BVB are one of the most recognized bands in country music history. Although the band's membership has changed through the years, the quality of music is still at the same high level. The band currently is a bit more hard-driving under Morey Sullivan's leadership than it was in earlier years when it had a sweeter more orchestra sound. Sullivan produces a more jazz feel. With Sullivan on bass, JD Walters/steel, Gary Sullivan/drums, Mike Moore/trumpet, Joe Settlemires/guitar, Roy Rosetta/piano and Kyle Dillingham/fiddle there's no doubt of their jazz influence. Sullivan said, We are still a country or western swing band. We play lots of jazz stuff but we also play classic country tunes and some contemporary country stuff by George Strait and Garth Brooks. We try to please the crowds. Hey we can even do some Son's of the Pioneers cowboy songs. We may be playing Miles Davis or Herbie Hancock but our roots are in country and western swing and always will be". - Tulsa World

"Brazos Valley Boys in Concert"

The Brazos Valley Boys are one of the premier western swing bands on the circuit today, with a decided jazz influence to their style. They also bring a fresh, contemporary and enthusiastic approach to this music we love.
The many years spent with superstar Hank Thompson have taught them how to work a crowd and to choose the correct songs to play. This night in KC the capacity crowd came to dance and they filled the floor all night long. Morey Sullivan , long-time band leader and bassist sang both country and swing standards. The band did some jumping instrumentals including, Sweet Georgia Brown and the Uncle Pin Head Blues. One moment they are playing a tune made famous by Eddy Arnold the next they are doing a jazz tune by KC great Charlie Parker. Primarily a western swing group they also changed the mood on this evening by doing contemporary country tunes by Alan Jackson, Keith Urban, George Strait and Garth Brooks. If you get a chance to hear this award winning band--take it--and enjoy!! - Kansas Western Swing News

Bio

The Brazos Valley Boys were created in 1946 by country music Hall of Fame legend Hank Thompson, in his hometown of Waco, Texas. Since their inception the Brazos Valley Boys (BVB) have defied musical convention. They have been trend-setters and that practice continues today with their dynamic, innovative style. The BVB incorporate the American musical art forms of country, jazz, Dixieland, blues and big-band swing to produce their own brand of western swing music: an energetic, eclectic style that has broad appeal. Their enthusiastic fan base attests to their popularity and musicianship.

Along the way the BVB have become one of the most honored bands in musical history. Honors include BILLBOARD MAGAZINE’S "Touring Band of the Year"---14 YEARS IN A ROW! In 2004 the Brazos Valley Boys were the FIRST BAND to ever be inducted, as a unit, into the WESTERN SWING MUSIC HALL OF FAME!

Some of the finest musicians and biggest names in western swing music have graced the stage and recording studio as Brazos Valley Boys. They have come from diverse musical backgrounds including jazz, country and the big swing bands and have brought their unique talents to the BVB sound. Today’s BVB continue that tradition with their own trademark contemporary sound and extraordinary talent.

"I've had the opportunity to hear the Brazos Valley Boys several times, and I've always come away impressed with a lot of things: the virtuosity of the members, their mastery of styles ranging from classic country to big-band pop, their uncluttered but creative arrangements, the infectious energy and fun they have together on stage. Western swing music may have been created more than 70 years ago, but there are still a few bands out there good enough to be doing exciting new things with it, while remaining true to its style and spirit. You can put the Brazos Valley Boys right at the top of that short but influential list. John Wooley, entertainment writer, Tulsa World

“I’ve always been proud that Brazos Valley Boys is synonymous with quality western swing music. That legacy is perpetuated today and will be into the future by Morey and the Brazos Valley Boys” Hank Thompson, Member Country Music Hall of Fame

“We love to play our music and we have a great time doing it and I think that’s evident to our audience. Our music has alot of energy and swings pretty hard. We've been told it's pretty hard to sit still when we play. Morey Sullivan, leader of the Brazos Valley Boys
