"Univerity Of Texas CO-Op party : review of BREAK"

While at the University of Texas at Austin, I enjoyed a fortunate position of being able to mobilize about two hundred fifty musically progressively minded students to discover BREAK.

As a DJ and long-time fan of electronic music, I was enthralled to be able to share my passion for this music with a group of people who likely otherwise would not have been exposed to live electronic dance music.

With a thorough knowledge of the Central Texas dance music community, I knew that BREAK would be the perfect act to introduce live dance music to this group of people who love to let loose, but are more accustomed to seeing the drums/guitar/bass/vocal set-up at their live music experiences. Likewise, seasoned dance community aficionados are sure to be keen to BREAK’s refreshing analog addition to the classic DJ set.

This reasoning proved correct; BREAK kept the floor packed through their whole set, and interested many new ears, while keeping the veterans interested. Jesse Brede, BREAK’s DJ, played a refined set of danceable house tunes that featured melodies paralleling the baseline, which on many occasions approached the electro/break-beat arena. He played to the crowd, but kept it real, which was a difficult task for this floor.

eVL_e accompanied this set flawlessly with an improvised acoustic and digital percussion act. His offerings to the aural experience integrated so seamlessly into the main mix that they were discernable only if I watched him play. Even when Jesse played familiar tunes, the sum total of the two could easily pass for a b-side remix. I loved it when eVL_e added a couple extra off-beat kicks to transform a four-to-the-floor house tune into a dangerously funky break. Also great was when he augmented the otherwise undanceable sixteen measures of a track’s break, showcasing his drumming talents and at the same time keeping the room moving. Of importance is that eVL_e never played too much, which could easily ruin the overall experience.

Perspective added the finishing touch to the experience, sparsely adding his words when he saw appropriate. His melodic verbiage musically bridges the gap between MC and singer. Perspective commented observationally on what he experienced at the party and added his own unique words to help mold the night into what he envisioned it should be; he drew inspiration from the milieu, the music, and the dance floor, at the same time working to influence and unify these elements into the whole. It worked.

BREAK captivated the dance floor’s attention. Where as many party-goers can become bored with a DJ set, perhaps because they do not fully understand the technique, the familiar element of the drum kit and the presence of the MC keeps the casual punter interested and intrigued. And the loop-free environment guarantees a fresh and new sound each booking.

When I think of BREAK, I think of Greenskeepers and Uneaq, but instead of a performance from BREAK, you get a party.

Bio

"The concept of BREAK has been tested and refined in various incarnations over the the last 12+ years.

Flanked by touring musicians on turntables, drumset, synthesizer-driven melodies and thick basslines, BREAK is perhaps one of the U.S.'s most under-recognized yet highly heralded live electronic groups. They dont mind the pace of recognition, for them its all about the fans getting it.
Fame isn't their focus so its evident that they will continue to evolve and contribute an important chapter to the History of Live Progressive Music."

BREAK's drummer eVL_e has literally searched across the U.S. for the ideal performers to complete the vision of executing tasteful, live electronic music typically performed by only a deejay and turntables.
He provides the human element of the breakbeats, is known for machine-like live drum-and-bass athleticism ( avg 3-4 hour sets) and his touring credits speak volumes.
