"Breaking Through EP Review...."

Jacksonville has an abundance of local talent. It’s almost an embarrassment of riches for a town of less than 1.5 million people to be the home of Molly Hatchet, Yellowcard, Shinedown and of course Skynard. Amongst these giants are your friends and neighbors. People like In Whispers and Manna Zen and Kicking Lassie. Bands that sweat on the stages at Jackrabbits and Brewster’s. Through the persistence of Jason the bass player I was given the Breaking Through EP called “The Scarlett Letter”. These guys aren’t strangers to me. In fact, at one of our(X1029…Jacksonville’s New Rock Alternative) free shows Breaking Through opened for Chevelle. I remember seeing the members of the band getting ready for the show and feeling like I was wearing way too little eye liner. Once they took the stage you could feel the energy and the appreciation the 904 audience had for BT…That’s what I call them now. My first impression of “The Scarlett Letter” is raw. Not raw as in undercooked or raw is war. But, Raw as in real… Raw as in exposed nerve. Raw like Brent from Shinedown the first time he sang fly from the inside. What this band lacks in polish they more than make up for with passion, fire and good old fashion Duval guts. Andrew Alexander from AB leaves it all on the track and makes you feel what he is feeling. My favorite track is #6 “Still Alive” where the boys channel their inner Neil Young and murder their demons with acoustic guitars. The mainstream says that “Rock is dead.” I say fuck that. Rock is alive and it lives in the bold new city in the south. If Breaking Through continues to put forth this type of effort then Breaking Though is exactly what they’ll do.
