(article about BTC winning the Supernova People's Choice Award & the BOTB)
... Break the Cycle changed the atmosphere entirely with their driving bass, moody melodies and fervent vocals. They pleased their fans with a sound that borrowed from Nine Inch Nails, A Perfect Circle and Duran Duran under Incubus-like vocals. Not only does this 5-piece band have an original sound, but also an impressive stage presence (white tees, jeans and dog tags were the dress code last night). Congrats to these boys for taking home $500 worth of selected Yamaha gear and 25 VIP advance screening passes to Paramount's "Without a Paddle" (oh yeah, Seth green baby...). ...

Bio
Break the Cycle is a Canadian band driven to become one of Canadas next biggest rock exports. Originally formed in Montreal, Break the Cycle is a name that represents a powerful and original collection of music 7 years in the making, all composed and recorded by band leader Maks K. BTCs unique sound, founded in hard rock, is not only powerful it is epic. It is a blend of intense yet distinct guitar work, catchy riffs, melodic and emotional vocals and clear influences in both electronic and classical music. As described by the head judge at the 2004 Supernova Battle of the Bands in Montreal where BTC took 1st place, it is a sound that borrowed from Nine Inch Nails, A Perfect Circle and Duran Duran under Incubus-like vocals.
When asked to explain the meaning behind the band name, Maks K answered: Break the Cycle is about many things. Its about hope, its about struggle; the English poet Samuel Johnson once said The chains of habit are too weak to be felt until they are too strong to be broken. Break the Cycle is about overcoming those struggles within you that feel insurmountable its about rising above yourself.
Break the Cycle is also a name that represents an ensemble of talented musicians that have taken this collection of music and created a powerful new live act. Not only does this 5-piece band have an original sound, but also an impressive stage presence, said the same Supernova judge. Currently, Break the Cycle is gearing up to take things to the next level. Armed with a demo collection of over 400 songs, the band is in the midst of relocating to Toronto where it will aggressively tour in support of its debut CD, expected for release in the late summer of 2007. BTCs live show, which showcases a commanding live presence as well as the bands creativity through coordinated outfits and pre-planned lighting, is not only one that you dont want to miss its one that you will leave you wanting to see it again.
BTCs roots begin when Maks and Chris became friends in high school in their hometown of Montreal. At the end of 1999, Chris began recording and producing Maks material. At the time, Maks was already a classically trained pianist, had drummed for various rock and jazz bands, was trained by a professional Broadway vocal coach and was teaching himself how to play guitar. Over the years, Chris and Maks recorded various types of music, formed a few different incarnations of the band and put together a couple of CDs. But more importantly, the two developed their vision for a type of music theyd always wanted to hear - music that would inspire, that would engulf the listener. And today, both proudly agree that they are ready to showcase that very sound to the world.
In 2004, the two decided to form a live band that could bring Maks music to the stage. Since then, BTC has had an array of musicians that has contributed to its live act. Yet the band only maintains three permanent members. Apart from being BTCs co-visionary, Chris is also the bands drummer. Break the Cycles bassist and only other permanent member, The Riggs, was the very first recruit in 2004, having known and played with Maks in their high school jazz band. BTCs live act also incorporates another guitarist and keyboardist, along with backup vocals in order to deliver the many intricate harmonies that are a distinct trait of BTCs sound.
Since the bands formation, it has played multiple shows, has won a Battle of the Bands, and has drawn a slew a positive praise online through Grageband.com, where it has won multiple awards, including the hard rock Song of the Day three times. The band also made it to the 3rd round (semi-finals) of the 2006 Montreal Emergenza Battle of the Bands.
Expect to see this driven set of individuals and their commanding sound turning heads and making waves over the next year. With the large number of rock styles today, BTC truly pulls a thread though them all, creating a powerfully melodic and emotional ride for the listener.
