"Valley Country: Bree Stevens"

Zack Quaintance
The Monitor

BREE STEVENS She's young and inexperienced, but she's insanely talented

Bree Stevens walked off the stage, unable to breathe.

She had just opened the Bay Stage at the South Padre International Music Festival. Stevens, a 17-year-old singer living in Brownsville, says she played the whole set on adrenaline.

And even though she gasped for air afterward, she says the experience was the most fun she has ever had.

Started her band in 2006, when she moved to the Valley
Hometown: Stillwater, Okla.
Current town: Brownsville
Upcoming show: Nov. 29th at the Pharr Christmas Tree Lighting
Sounds like: Jewel + Dolly Parton
Influences: Dolly Parton, Reba, Rascal Flats and Jewel

Cowboy cred: 3 cowboy hats

How does a Valley crowd differ from a regular country crowd? A lot different. Playing here, even compared to Laredo, is different. There, they're a lot more wild, loud. I think they listen to country more than people do down here. The percentage is higher. They actually know the songs.

As a country musician, how do you relate to Tejano music? Being from Oklahoma, I've never really listened to it. I moved down here four and a half years ago. I don't speak much Spanish. I don't listen to it much. I really don't know.

What's your dream gig? I would love to perform with Dolly Parton. I think she's so much fun. It could be anywhere.

Where do you expect country music to take you? To Nashville hopefully. I'm taking it one step at a time.

"Local Talent Kicks Off South Padre International Music Festival"

October 31, 2008 -
by CARL PHILLIPS / Maggie Denney, Island Breeze

South Padre International Music Festival began on Friday afternoon with up and coming country artist Bree Stevens of Brownsville.

She's only 17 years old, but already, Stevens, of Brownsville, has been singing and performing country music for more than a decade. "It's a passion," says Bree, "I've always known this is what I wanted to do."

So at age 15, with the support of her family, she started her own band, playing local bars and festivals in the Valley and gaining valuable experience.

On Friday, the hard work paid off when Bree took the stage at Louie's Backyard, the first artist to play in this year's showcase.

"I was having dinner at Chili's with my best friend when my mom called to tell me I would be playing at the festival with Willie Nelson," says Bree, "I never thought this would happen, playing with Willie. I've listened to him my whole life."

She admits it's also somewhat intimidating. This is the biggest venue she's ever played so the band picked the songs they were most comfortable with. While Bree has an extensive play list of cover tunes, she is also a songwriter and guitarist. Original songs like "Til You Come Home" and "I'm Through With You" rival anything heard in Nashville today.

Bree taught herself how to play the guitar because as she put it, "I hate the piano," which was her first instrument. "I would listen to country music singers up there on stage playing the guitar and just loved the way it sounded and I told my mom, that's what I want to play."

The high school junior is contemplating life after graduation, unsure if she will go to college or straight to Music Row. "I'd like to go to the Blair School of Music at Vanderbilt, but if I don't get in there, who knows? I may just go straight to Nashville, attend community college there and keep working on my music." - The Brownsville Herald

Bree is working on her songwriting and cummulating music for her first CD.

Bree Stevens is a Country Singer/Songwriter from South Texas. This blond haired, green eyed, Southern Belle will knock your socks off with her voice. She has taken the Texas music scene by storm. The girls got some serious pipes! She may be young but she can hold her own on stage! Some have compared her to Carrie Underwood, Allison Kraus, and Martina McBride. She's young like Taylor Swift with a little bit of Miranda Lambert sassy thrown in. She's played in bars, fairs & festivals all over Texas & Oklahoma.
At the age of 18, her sweet soft high range and brassy belting alto voice is top notch. She has amazing vocal & breath control and can hold a note forever and a day. She can go from sweet and soft innocence to balls out rockin' it. It's amazing how much sound comes out of her small, five foot two frame. She has outstanding clarity on the high notes, a growl in her chest voice, and this little note flip she does within a line or at the end of a line of song that is unique only to her.
The Monitor/Festiva (McAllen, Texas) recently said of Bree ........she's insanely talented. The Brownsville Herald said she's "something to hear." Bree covered the front page of The Island Breeze. They stated that "her original tunes rival anything heard in Nashville today." She very well may be the Rio Grande Valley s next county music star.
Bree recalls, the hardest part of putting a band together was getting really good musicians to take me, a 15 year old (at the time), seriously. Some dismissed me before they even heard me sing or heard what I had to say because of my age. It was really frustrating! But patience paid off. Since October of 2006 Bree has had her own band that travels Central and South Texas.
It's not just homework that keeps this teenager on the move. Recently, she finished recording some of her original music in demo format in a local studio. And at the beginning of October, Bree played at the Convention Center on South Padre Island for Bike Fest 08 where she met Nashville Triple Platinum Artist, Henry Paul of BlackHawk. On Halloween, Bree kicked off the South Padre Island International Music Festival on the Bay Stage where she met Willie's daughter, Paula Nelson. Shortly after that, Bree received a message from Paula's manager asking if she was available on Valentine's Day to open for Paula. Bree recorded Devoted in Nashville with Grammy Nominated Producer, Michael Bush. Bree just returned from doing gigs in Oklahoma City. She and Texas Music Artist, Granger Smith will share the stage in November at a local fundraiser.
