"'Trial by Fire' review"

"A stunning debut from a very talented songwriter" - John Lay (former manager of Squeeze and Robyn Hitchcock)

"'Trial by Fire' review"

"For a first album, it's an impressive if overly ambitious effort. Fans of Radiohead and the Dave Matthews Band will feel an immediate connection in Rice's weathered (yet soulful) vocal and complex musical arrangements. His lyrics are skillfully woven images. A sample from "Vicious Life":

Even King Kong wasn't so strong
that he could take it for very long
because emotion in motion can be a deadly potion
when it's mixed all wrong ...

Rice's delivery of this lyrical structure puts him in the elite class of artists who can do the scatty-sounding thing without getting annoying. Already, he's won me over. " - Indie-music.com

"'Lonely Palace' single off 'Trial by Fire' review"

"Wow, the vocals are amazing on this song. Great bittersweet lyrics and small doses of falsetto quality vocal."...

Bio

Originally hailing from Boston, MA but, now based out of North Carolina, singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Brendan Rice creates an intimate sound that finds its way into your head and stays with you long after you've listened. Nowontour.com says, "It's his soulful sound, alluring lyrics, and melodious resonance that moved me...Rice's lyrical cry engulfs your emotions".

With a deep, resonant voice like Eddie Vedder’s and an intimate songwriting style like Elliott Smith’s, Hillsborough, North Carolina’s Brendan Rice bridges the gap between singer/songwriter territory and that of rock and roll. The dusty tracks off the LP Death of a Toy Soldier have the storytelling specificity of Bruce Springsteen’s acoustic folk, but the roots-rock edge of a band like Creedence Clearwater Revival. With blistering guitar solos that express the songwriter’s anxiety or anger and acoustic tracks that ache with romantic regret, Rice has created an intelligent, evocative collection of songs full of masculine vulnerability.

His debut EP, Trial by Fire, boasts a guest spot by Dana Colley of Morphine fame, who contributed baritone sax. Indie-music.com said, “Fans of Radiohead will feel an immediate connection in Rice's weathered (yet soulful) vocal and complex musical arrangements. His lyrics are skillfully woven images".

A multi-instrumentalist as well as a singer-songwriter, Rice also appears on over ten commercially released albums by other bands, including the Boston Award Winning Three Day Threshold. He has worked with an array of big time producers including Nick Peterson who was responsible for mixing Bon Iver's mega-breakthrough 'For Emma Forever Ago" and the legendary Brian Paulson who has produced artist such as Beck, Wilco, Polvo and the Rosebuds.
