"Brenda Vaughn receives international recognition"

Brenda Vaughn has received major kudos and many awards for her hard work and dedication. The Black Music Association Academy of America recognized Vaughn as “A Living Legend” at the 1997 Bay Area Black Music Awards in Oakland.

Vaughn performed with her first band in St. Louis and as lead singer for her uncle’s band. However, she soon returned to Oakland and starting her own entertainment career. Vaughn jammed with members of En Vogue, Toni! Tony! Toné!, Confunktion and Sheila E, and later Brenda went back to school, where she became a fixture with the Traveling Voices Choir at Merritt College. Under the direction of Jackie Hairston, Vaughn began to understand the stage and how to perform live. Blessed with a powerful voice that has a soulful R&B-, Gospel-type of sound, she soon became one of the most sought after female performers in the Bay Area and on the West Coast.

Vaughn released her first single on the Pashlo Label; it garnered rave reviews and opened many doors and opportunities for her. She received awards for “Best Entertainer” and “Best Recording Artist” from the Top Star Awards, and in December 1997, she was presented with a city of Oakland proclamation, which declared it Brenda Vaughn’s Day.

After landing a position as entertainer director for Geoffrey’s Inner Circle, Vaughn briefly stopped performing to focus on producing live shows for such groups as George Duke, Rachel Ferrell, Maxine Jones and Dawn Robinson of En Vogue, Tony! Toni! Toné!, Brian McKnight, The Motown Talent Search, Mint Condition, The Hawkins Family and The Gospel Brunch.

Now based in Tokyo, Vaughn has moved into the forefront of television commercials, coordinating major tours and numerous recordings. Since arriving in Japan, Vaughn has worked with Japan’s top recording artist Hirari Ken while coordinating singers for “MTV Unplugged” in New York. The visionary Vaughn also has written and performed on video games for Konami, Sega and Sony.

The Bay Area superstar has gone triple platinum, with two platinum awards for co-producing and working with Japan’s Ki/oon /Sony Music recording artist The Gospellers.

"Brenda Vaughn Brings Oakland Soul to the World"

Bay Area African American Women in Music: Brenda Vaughn Brings Oakland Soul to the World
By Lee HildebrandPosted June 22, 2015 12:24 pm
Brenda Vaughn didn’t know quite what to expect when in the late ‘80s her friend, the late Oakland soul singer Jacquii Marshall, recommended her for a gig at Eikokan, a nightclub in Osaka, Japan.

“It was very, very different,” she recalled last week to this writer. “It looked like I’d walked into the middle of an old Japanese movie.”

Vaughn went over so well at Eikokan that the club kept flying her in from Oakland for return engagements. She eventually settled in Tokyo and spent 13 years there performing in clubs, concerts and cutting records and commercial jingles.

She also began booking gigs for other African American singers living in Japan.

“There was work around the clock, especially for females,” said the Mississippi-born singer, now 56. “They don’t care if you’re big or small. They just care if you’re good.”

The petite vocalist was a popular attraction during the ‘80s at Dock of the Bay in Berkeley, Ivey’s in Oakland and other local African American venues.

Vaughn – who organized a hugely successful benefit at Geoffrey’s in January for ailing former Prince vocalist, Rosie Gaines – left Japan in 2011 following the devastating Tohoku earthquake and tsunami and nuclear power plant meltdowns that followed. She then began traveling throughout Asia and living out of a suitcase, most recently during the last six months of 2014 in Singapore, where she performed five nights a week at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel.

Just last week, Vaughn was in Macon, Georgia, where she was teaching voice, stage presence and other subjects to teenagers at the Otis Redding Music Camp.

Vaughn is back in Oakland this week organizing a show called “Women Who Jam! The Next Generation!” The show will be held Friday, June 26 at 7:30 p.m. at Geoffrey’s Inner Circle, 410 14th St. in Oakland. Through her Sistuh to Sistuh organization, Vaughn is co-producing the event with the San Francisco chapter of the National Association of Black Female Executives in Music & Entertainment (NABFEME).

Among the artists slated to perform are singers Micheala Cheadle, Tamar Gillette, Ke’Shay and Milika Ubaka and the duo Mz SwitchedUp. Their performances will be critiqued by a panel including: vocalists Vaughn, Larry Batiste and Nona Brown, keyboardist Rodney Franklin and producer Jay King.

Tickets are $10 in advance from brownpapertickets.com/event/1620981, or $15 at the door.

Vaughn will leave Oakland next weekend for an extended engagement in Taiwan, then return to Oakland before going to Russia for three weeks.

“I’m really enjoying my life right now,” Vaughn said. “There are a lot of countries I still want to go to. I’m not chained to one particular place. I can get up and go anyplace. I like that freedom.”

"Brenda Vaughn Ready or Not Im falling in love Again"

Brenda Vaughn - Ready or not (I'm falling in love again)

Brenda Vaughn is a great singer from Oakland, California. She is also songwriter and music coordinator. She was born in 1958. She started singing at the age of 4. Later, she entered in the Gospel Jazz Choir of the Merrit College under the direction of Jackie Hairston. She started her professional career as a singer in several spots such as Dock of The Bay, Ivey’s In Jack London Square, Erles Solano Club, The Hyatt Regency and later Geoffrey’s Inner Circle.
When she became known in her area, the label Pashlo Records spotted her and signed with her. In the early 80s she released her first single entitled "Ready or not (I'm falling in love again) / Nature's calling".

I want to note that "Ready or not (I'm falling in love again)" is one of my favorite songs. This great song was written by Richard McGowan, Chris Burns and Brenda Vaughn. Arranged by Richard McGowan, Chris Burns and Vernon Black. Produced by Richard McGowan, Chris Burns and D.Denny.
Some of the musicians were Vernon Black on guitar, Richard McGowan on bass and Chris Burns on keyboards.

The flip side "Nature's calling" is a funky song. This single received great reviews and opened many performance opportunities.

Later Brenda discovered her talent on production. Brenda produced/co-produced/coordinated special events with so many major recording artists such as Cece Peniston, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, Ann Nesby, The BET Presents Motown Talent Search, Brian McKnight, Kashif and the love her life, “Sunday Gospel Brunch”! As a result, Brenda formed a production company called “Sistuh To Sistuh”. Brenda received awards for Best Entertainer and Best Recording Artist in the Bay from The Top Star Awards in The San Francisco Bay Area and was also presented with Oaklands proclamation Dec 12, 1997 this was declared Brenda Vaughn's Day! She started to travel all over Europe and Asia. For some reasons she moved from Oakland to Japan, where she gained big recognition and success. For those long time achievement, on April 2007, she was honored as “Living Legend Award” at Bay Area Black Music Awards. She also has received one triple platinum and two platinum awards for her coordinating work with Japan's Ki/oon /Sony Music recording artist The Gospellers. Finally, Brenda had a chance to perform at one of President Obama’s inauguration parties, as a background singer.
In 2010 she released a single CD entitled "The worst is over" on B.International Entertainment LLC. Her new full CD coming soon.

Brenda Vaughn – renowned singer, voce coach, manager and booking agent – is returning to Geoffrey’s Inner Circle after working for a number of years in Taiwan and Singapore and other cities in Europe and Asia.

She has returned home to direct and book musical entertainment at Geoffrey’s and take charge of initiatives to bring new life to Oakland’s music scene. “The addition of Ms. Vaughn to our team will ultimately be a benefit to the whole city of Oakland,” said Geoffrey Pete.

The first musical extravaganza, “My Sister’s Keeper,” will be held Saturday, Jan. 31 at Geoffrey’s – a tribute and fundraiser for Rosie Gaines, formerly of the Bay Area, who was recruited with Prince.

The event will feature R&B greats Dwayne Wiggins, Lady Bianca, Jeannie Tracy, Maxine Jones, Tara Kemp, Tony Dewayne, Charlene Moore, Derick Hughes and members of Rosie Gaines’ old band coming together.

Others on the star-studded program include Melvin Carter from Atlanta, Curtis Ohlsom, Wilton Raab, members of Grand Central Station and other Bay Area musicians. Tentatively scheduled to appear are Rosie Gaines and Otis Redding 111.

“The Jan 31 event is not only a tribute but kicks off efforts to establish a foundation for musicians in the Bay Area so that we can lend a hand to each other,” Vaughn said. “ I want to make this project a vehicle so that a musician who is experiencing difficulties can get help with PG&E bills, food or for other emergencies. It’s a way we can help each other. “

In addition, Pete wants to reinstate programs that involve youth in music and in the music scene.

“ We are going to work to reinstate the mandatory playing of instrument by all students of the public school system, in co-ordination with the Oakland Symphony and the collective of musicians through out the city,” said Pete, adding that he would like to see the city contribute funds to subsidize musicians who perform at Oakland venues.

A birthday celebration for Brenda Vaughn will be held on Thursday, Jan. 8 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Geoffrey’s.
Geoffrey’s Inner Circle is located at410 14th St. in Oakland. For more information on the Jan. 31, go to www.geoffreysinnercircle.com/ - Post News Group

"Soul Singers Aid of Rosie Gaines with Benefit"

Soul Singers Come to the Aid of Rosie Gaines with Benefit, Jan. 31
By Lee HildebrandPosted January 26, 2015 4:58 pm
Oakland soul singer Brenda Vaughn began planning a fundraiser benefit for her friend, singer and keyboardist Rosie Gaines, who has gone through periods of homelessness and was hospitalized for most of last year.

The benefit, “I Am My Sister’s Keeper,” is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 31, 8 p.m. at Geoffrey’s Inner Circle, 410 14th Street in Oakland. It will feature a star-studded lineup of performers, including Lenny Williams, D’Wayne Wiggins of Tony Toni Tone, Wilton Rabb of Graham Central Station, Tuck and Patti, Tony Dwayne and Levi Seacer.

While in Singapore for an engagement at the Ritz Carlton Hotel, Vaughn received reports from back home about the plight of her friend, each one more alarming than the last.

Gaines, who is best known for her duet with Prince on his 1993 hit “Diamonds and Pearls,” had spent much of her time in and out of the hospital after her legs had become swollen and seriously infected since she stopped taking her insulin.

Gaines, according to Vaughn, is now living in a homeless shelter in Richmond, where staff is making sure she takes her medication.

“I knew she was in trouble for over a year,” said Vaughn, while sitting in her office at Geoffrey’s Inner Circle in Oakland.

Gaines – from Pittsburg, CA – had been a popular attraction at such local venues as Earle’s Solano Club, Yoshi’s and the Great American Music Hall prior to joining Prince’s New Power Generation in 1989.

“I was thinking I’d send $300 or something to help out, but it just kept coming back to me. Once I found out she had nowhere to stay, I felt like I was supposed to do something bigger,” said Vaughn.

Vaughn began orchestrating the benefit in November while in Singapore and reached out to several Bay Area entertainers, asking them to part in the event. In December, at the end of her long-term contract with the hotel, Vaughn flew home to recruit more participants and put the final touches on the benefit.

Other performing vocalists include Vaughn, Tiffany Austin, Faye Carol, Melvin Carter, Darlene Coleman, La Toya Gaines, Nikita Germaine, Derick Hughes, Tara Kemp, Lady Bianca, Charlene Moore, Terrie Odabi, Otis Redding III and former En Vogue member Maxine Jones.

Vaughn said Gaines is expected to attend.

“Her legs have been getting better,” said La Toya, 37. “Since she has diabetes, it’s going to take a long time for them to heal. If she stops taking her medicine and her legs get re-infected, they’re going to end up having to amputate them. We’re trying to avoid that at all costs.”

Proceeds from the benefit will go towards housing where Gaines’ only child, La Toya, can help her 54-year-old mother get back on her feet, physically and mentally, and provide other living necessities.

Prince, according to a very reliable source, “is absolutely helping.” - Post News Group
