"New Brennagh Burns CD"

New Brennagh Burns CD

Singer/Songwriter Brennagh Burns's latest CD is called Raw and that describes the marvellous music on this disc to a T. Most of the songs feature only vocals, acoustic guitar and a djembe drum. As a result, the sound is as honest and real as you get.

This stripped down affair works well as it helps bring out Brennagh's outstanding, expressive vocals. She also blends in great guitar work and talented songwriting.

Chad Brown joins her on the aforementioned djembe (with Zander Lamothe filling in on a track) and Rob Lamothe adds his electric guitar on one tune as well.

"Dunnville’s Brennagh Burns has rare talent"

Dunnville’s Brennagh Burns has rare talent

Dunnville resident Brennagh Burns enjoys opportunities to connect with others through her music.

By Mike Burgess, Arts and Entertainment

It’s a rare gift when a singer can captivate an audience from the first note.

Dunnville’s Brennagh Burns clearly has that gift.

Also playing guitar, the commanding and articulate, yet soft, smoky-voiced self-taught blues/folk singer began writing her own songs at the young age of 14.

Toiling away quietly, she worked with Bob Doidge (U2, Gordon Lightfoot, Bob Dylan) at the famous Grant Avenue Studios in Hamilton at only 18 and finally released her first recording, an EP titled The Winter Project in early 2011 under the guidance of another Dunnville resident, sound engineer Rob Lamothe (River Dogs).

Not one to be picky when an opportunity arises, Burns will play any venue as long as there is somebody to listen to her work- the mark of a true artist who loves her craft.

She has brought her sweet voice and guitar prowess to local festivals, coffee houses, clubs, wineries and even bus stations; it matters not to this talented, bold woman of Irish descent. Sharing the billing with such notables as Derek Miller and Sara Harmer in the past has been a positive learning experience for Burns and can only benefit her going forward.

Never relaxing, she is always looking forward.

“My musical partner Brandon General and I have been working on a new duo project, “Say Goodnight, Gracie!” which has proven thus far to be a very fun and fruitful endeavor. We’re having a lot of fun writing together and allowing our styles of composition and song-craft to take both of us to completely new places creatively,” said Burns.

“I am also currently working on material for my new album, which I hope to release late next year. And of course, I will continue to play both solo and live shows with my other band, “Run For the Hills” with Cindy Dell along with a rotating group of amazing musicians including Duane Rutter, Les Smith, Matthew Ryan Woolley and Brandon General, to name a few.”

Admiring the work of such musical legends as Alanis Morissette, Harry Nilsson, John Lennon and Joni Mitchell, she looks at General as her main collaborator. “He has influenced me in so many ways.”

“He has introduced me to new music, new styles of playing, new and wonderful resources and people. He supports me in my solo career, whether it be running through the songs with me to strengthen them and tweak them, or standing up on stage behind me, adding his fabulous guitar flare on one of my songs.”

The employee of Flyers Café, a Dunnville entertainment venue itself, Burns also receives a lot of support from family, friends and employer and credits her mother’s sacrifices as a main reason for her success. “From the time I was a little girl, my mother, a single mother of two and one of the hardest working ladies I know… worked as hard as she could, made as many sacrifices as possible and at times probably outstretched herself beyond belief to ensure that I could follow my dreams; whether it was driving me from dance to swimming, volleyball, theatre or buying me guitars and strings to make sure that I was able to pursue my interests and passions; she did it.”

“She is amazing and the most incredible source of love and support there is.”

Asked by The Sachem what gives her the most satisfaction, the musician said, ”Knowing that I have connected with someone through my music in a very intimate way.”

“I love being able to perform and be completely lost in the moment; and know that someone out there is lost in that moment with me. It’s unbelievable… I love being able to express myself creatively, and share and learn through music.”
