"Brett Miller: “Something Beautiful” – an absolute pop powerhouse!"

South Florida native and NYU Songwriting Masters graduate Brett Miller is set to release his debut EP in May 2017. In 2014, after completing his undergrad in vocal performance at Rollins College, Brett went on to pursue a Masters in Songwriting at NYU, under scholarship. Brett collaborated with fellow student and songwriter, Austin Zudeck and partner, Justin Thunstrom, who co-wrote “Something Beautiful”, the first track from the EP, which he also produced. Brett Miller has played over 1000 shows since the age of 16, including most notably, The Studio at Webster Hall, The Parkside Lounge, Provincetown Playhouse, Redeye Grill and Mastro’s Steakhouse.

Brett Miller makes music the way it should be made…to last a lifetime. Embrace is an appropriate word for this track; Miller is constantly reaching out for someone, seeking to close the gap and provoke an impassioned connection, and that longing is evident throughout, aesthetically.

It multiplies the dimension of his art to the point of reaching dazzling tones to soul-searching ranges. While his excursion into this mainstream acoustic pop arrangement exhibits his star power, he reduces and understates the stunning impact of his timbre just enough in exchange for authenticity.

While his voice is far and away one of the purest and most refined in recent memory, Miller never exerts himself to showcase it above all else, staying inside a balanced sonic atmosphere that allows the song to breathe and grow just as much as his voice does.

At its very best and sharpest, “Something Beautiful”, is a poignant and vocally rich survey of turbulent emotions, instinctively producing the same brand of pop soul that many greats before him have used to explode onto the pop scene.

It displays an intuitive understanding of feeling and what it’s like to yearn for ‘something beautiful’ regardless of whether it is on a personal or collective level. Miller’s particular variation of this aesthetic is striking and soothing, and when he is most in tune with his skill set, he is totally enchanting.

“Something Beautiful” is a great listen on because it’s a succinct summation of Miller’s agenda, and the subtlety of his timbre, falsetto and his tonality are stunning. The song is expressive and built for easy listening.

Brett Miller has the voice of an absolute powerhouse, and he knows just how to use it. His debut connects his feelings with his mood, and when it plateaus it peels back the emotional state to the visceral, and it explores further down inside. Miller’s introspection goes as deep as the soul will allow. - JamSphere

"Lighting up the Night for 4/20"

On April 20, four bands and musicians with NYU roots will take the stage at the classically grungy-but-not-too-grungy, cheap-but-not-too-cheap Bowery Electric in the East Village for the thematically appropriate showcase Joint Jams. The show was organized by headliner and NYU Songwriting Master’s program graduate Brett Miller, who booked a careful selection of colleagues and classmates.
Tiger + Man

This Brooklyn-based electro-acoustic duo first met at NYU in 2012 when Steinhardt alum Tiger Darrow was working on her bachelor’s degree in theory and composition and Steinhardt alum Andrew Orkin was finishing up his master’s in film scoring. Their debut self-titled EP was released in 2015 and embodies more than just this dreamy pair’s sound. Five artists from around the world created artwork inspired by the EP, in addition to three music videos that were released ranging from avant-garde performance art to stop-motion animation. With both electronic and acoustic elements driving the album, Tiger + Man combines human introspection with something galactic and other-worldly. Their performance is sure to be a hit, and fans of this duo must be delightfully curious to hear the set and see how they will recreate their signature sound.

Brett Miller
A recent graduate of NYU’s Songwriting Master’s program, Brett Miller is ready to headline next week with a brand new EP’s worth of music to debut. The actual album won’t drop until May, but his newly released single “Something Beautiful” is available on Soundcloud and YouTube. In an interview, Miller said that he is excited to be playing with his new band and to get out from behind his longtime preferred instrument — the ivory keys. He is devoted to his audience and while he is an accomplished pianist, he wants to bring a different kind of freedom and level of performance to his set. A lifelong performer, Miller has honed his musicality and confidence on stage and he’s ready to introduce his new solo career to NYC. He may not have many songs out yet, but “Something Beautiful” represents a mature and soulful optimism delivered with elegant simplicity from someone who occupies the roles of both career musician and emerging artist.
“This evening isn’t really about making a lot of money. It’s just about introducing myself to the audience and New York,” Miller said. “It’s for me an introduction to know that this is happening. I’m just excited for 4/20, you know what I mean?” - Washington Square News

"Brett Miller Talks New Single, and EP Release Set For May 2017"

‘Seizing the opportunity’ has always been the motto for Brett Miller. In 2014, after completing his undergrad in vocal performance at Rollins College, Miller went on to pursue a Masters in Songwriting at NYU, under scholarship. At a young age, he experienced an overload of big artists growing up that would ultimately shape his musical perception, thanks to the support of his parents. During his collegiate years, Brett would be out playing shows both as a solo artist and as a member of several bands, finding his comfort on the stage. Having now played over 1000 shows since the age of 16, Miller is set to release his debut EP in May 2017, leading off with his first single “Something Beautiful”.

Tell us about your most recent single, “Something Beautiful”! What went into the making of this work? It’s been a long time coming for releasing this tune! My co-writer/producer of the track, Austin Zudeck, and I wanted to capture that good feeling and essence of the title. We had just met and shook hands for the first time before proceeding to sit down, talk it out, and write the first draft of the song in full, with nothing but an idea for the title that I jotted down the night before. From that point, we made a good quality demo, and started showing some people, getting their feedback and feeling delighted with the responses. Months later, I decided that I wanted to release SB. I reached out to Austin and his partner, Justin Thunstrom, to produce this track and to help emulate that sound for the rest of the songs on the EP. From then till now, we’ve done some amazing work! I’m so stoked to begin this releasing season with the EP title track, “Something Beautiful!”

What is your main goal for this upcoming debut EP release? To formally introduce myself. I’ve been holding on to this music and a lot of my artistry until the moment that seems appropriate. This EP represents all my time writing, rehearsing, and preparing myself for the road ahead. All I want is to have this music hit you in a place you didn’t expect. Empower you as human being to handle anything in this world. And of course, to unite us all under the same idea that collaboration is the key to accomplishing anything.

What is your favorite part about this work? Do you have any favorite songs (if you had to choose)? The variety. Yes, there are feel-good, uplifiting and empowering songs, but then there are songs that contain real life scenarios that bring a sense of real darkness that we all face, in songs like “Eye to Eye” and “Second Nature”. This EP spreads out far and wide, but it all comes back to a sense of empowerment, to see the way out of darkness, and create the ideal picture for yourself and the ones you love. It’s an amazing feeling when you just get that.

What would you say was the most challenging part of putting together this EP? Finding the balance in the writing. I do my best to represent superior musicianship in singing, playing, and writing. Particularly with writing for a specific project like an EP, there has to be a balance in the songs as whole, which can get rather complicated. I wanted to find cohesiveness with these songs, and that would reflect in the lyrics, and sometimes in whether or not the song itself was a fit. It was tough, but I couldn’t be happier with the outcome.

Besides the release, what is next for you in 2017? Just more music and shows. Staying local in NYC, and solidifying myself as a member of the original music community. Hitting all the popular venues, and meeting all the local talents. Very excited! Thanks for joining in.
