'City Lights' is the audio equivalent of a must see independent film. Part living room confession, part landscape journey, this LP is a throwback to hand-crafted albums you can listen through. A listen may elicit the honesty of Neil Young, the grace of Nick Drake or the craft of Elvis Costello.

Biography

Brett Bixby is an independent songwriter out of Long Beach, CA. His debut album 'City Lights' continues to garner fans of honest, unhurried music. As eardrums.blogspot.com says ... "I believe in this album and the words Brett Bixby sings." Bixby is known for turning a phrase in simple but unexpected ways and his past experience is a veritable wellspring of musical mischief. The title track sets the stage... "The holes among the truth are like the stars along the sky, they're easier to see without the city lights". The songs sound like polaroids decorated with the subtle touches of an inspired cast. From the string-laden latticework of ‘Fireside’ to the dream-stitched intimacy of ‘Spilling’, Bixby has hit an easy stride and the music is a reflection of a newfound ability to stretch into the places where acoustic guitars and keyboards co-mingle dissolve into melody wrapped vignettes.

Bixby honed his craft playing underground shows at a warehouse in Long Beach known as The Space. The artist-driven venue was a creative kiln that fired musical friendships that continue to evolve. Bixby is also a member of Rocco Deluca & The Burden and it was a capacity crowd night at The Space when the band was first 'discovered'. He has also collaborated with a wide range of folks including Molly Jenson, Buchanan, Chris Paul Overall and The Dibs.

City Lights

Written By: Brett Bixby

city lights

wake me up with a smile
haven’t had the head to be with someone for a while
see me off as i go
i’ll be coming back again further up the road

and i can see a hint of apprehension in your eyes
but don’t believe what history belies
the holes among the truth are like the stars along the sky
they’re easier to see without the city lights

all i offer is a sail that i can move
if i prevail upon a wind like yours i’d fill it up with you
where you take me i will go head the far horizon north
we can cast along the way until we rudder up the shore

and i can see a hint of apprehension in your eyes
but don’t believe what history belies
the holes among the truth are like the stars along the sky
they’re easier to see without the city lights

Lift

Written By: Brett Bixby

you’re a colorful bird
and sometimes it gets you into trouble
everyone heard
all the fingers came out by the dozen
to puncture your bubble

up into the atmosphere
chasing is the habit
all your life just to get to here
is this the way you thought you’d have it

it’s not like you’re needing someone to remind you
but somebody who’s free of the burdens of their past
i know you’re inclination is heavy on the wonder
but wonder only gets you as far as you can grasp

so reach into the not quite clear
the hole has crossed the rabbit this year
all your life just to get to here
is this the way you thought you’d have it

listen to someone worth repeating
and hold them in the palm of your head
lesson for all the self-defeating
the heavy you feel is the sound
of dragging your wings on the ground - lift them

Fireside

Written By: Brett Bixby

do you know where i can get me some momentum
i’ve been looking but there isn’t much to spare
i’ll be honest if you lend me your attention
we can figure out the details when we’re closer

somewhere we can both be right
somewhere where imagination grazes in the half-light
i’m enamored it’s december in your eyes so
warm me by your fireside
warm me by your fireside

we can listen to fallen branches
orchestrate the open sky
we can set out with even chances
burn our way from wood to white
