"Brett Bixby - City Lights"

Brett Bixby is an independent songwriter from Long Beach, CA, who just has released his debut album "City lights" on his own label. Indie? Well, he is in the right use of the word, - as in "unsigned/independent from labels", but his music does not sound "indie-pop" or "alternative" in any way.

So how does it sound? It sounds good. Not "cool", and not like something that we haven't heard before, - but it sounds really good. And it sounds honest and beautiful, just like the press-release says. I believe in this album and in the words Brett Bixby sings.

Bixby has a very refreshing and soothing voice, and his songs are most often lead by his vocals and an acoustic guitar. His lyrics are sometimes very good, with words and sentences that remain in your thoughts after the albums finished. He sounds like a male Joni Mitchell, and his music also reminds me of Josh Rouse, Elliot Smith and maybe also Nick Drake. This album is warm and intimate, and the perfect companion for a rainy day or a dark evening with candlelights. My favourites on the album is "hindsight" (the chorus...mmmm...), the title track "city lights" and the fantastic "matador".

Album: Brett Bixby 'City Lights' (2006) independent

Brett Bixby is an independent songwriter out of Long Beach, CA. His debut album 'City Lights' continues to garner fans of honest, unhurried music. As says ... "I believe in this album and the words Brett Bixby sings." Bixby is known for turning a phrase in simple but unexpected ways and his past experience is a veritable wellspring of musical mischief. The title track sets the stage... "The holes among the truth are like the stars along the sky, they're easier to see without the city lights". The songs sound like polaroids decorated with the subtle touches of an inspired cast. From the string-laden latticework of ‘Fireside’ to the dream-stitched intimacy of ‘Spilling’, Bixby has hit an easy stride and the music is a reflection of a newfound ability to stretch into the places where acoustic guitars and keyboards co-mingle dissolve into melody wrapped vignettes.

Bixby honed his craft playing underground shows at a warehouse in Long Beach known as The Space. The artist-driven venue was a creative kiln that fired musical friendships that continue to evolve. Bixby is also a member of Rocco Deluca & The Burden and it was a capacity crowd night at The Space when the band was first 'discovered'. He has also collaborated with a wide range of folks including Molly Jenson, Buchanan, Chris Paul Overall and The Dibs.
