PT traveling man unveils lessons on CD
Music sifts through world of articicial looks for genuine meaning in life
By Evan Cael
Peninsula Daily News, March 27th 2006

PORT LUDLOW - At the tender age of 20, Brett Pemberton has battled his demons and emerged with a CD that documents his struggles.
Living in milan, Italy, in the fall of 2005, working as a model surrounded by similarly chiseled faces, Pemberton returned to his roots in the North Olympic Peninsula with an inspired mission and cleansed awareness.
"I came back with a paradigm shift," Pemberton said.
"It took the most superficial environment in the world for me to prioritize my life. Modeling is money. It's fun, but it's not a passion."
Holes up for writing
Upon his return to Washington, Pemberton holed himself in a home near Fort Worden State Park for two months while he was house-sitting, turning it into a make-shift recording studio; there he proceeded to cut his first full lenth album known as, "The House of Deceit and Lies."
On the 12-track CD, Pemberton sings and plays all the instruments - guitar, bass, and drums, with some background vocal help on one of the tracks from his friend, Ashley Danielek.
The songs came out of an explosion of journal writing, filling up 80 pages with themes on independence and home, inspired by his time in Italy.
Although his trip abroad served to connect him with other models, agents and fashion industry moguls, Pemberton said he grew tired of his vacant starring cohorts whose conversations were limited to hair styles and clothing.
"Everybody has that experience that flips you and gives you a 180," Pemberton said.
"My choice was to make an album. This is a life-changing experience documented on CD."
Although this album is Pemberton's first solo endeavor, he's been playing music since age eight, and tinkering with recording equipment since age nine.
Most recently, Pemberton was highlighted on a television show this month called "Seattle Stars," a singing competition broadcast on KIRO TV.
Out of 1,000 auditioners, Pemberton made it to the third round, but then went up against a seasoned gospel singer.
"I felt great about it," said Pemberton. "But it was intimidating going up againsts a 40 year-old gospel master."
Pemberton will continue to pursue his passion for music and quest for personal and musical independence.
"I have to be an independent artist, but I'm also searching for the holy grail at the same time," he said.
"The House of Deceit and Lies" is available at Quimper Sound Music and Tapes, 901 Water St. in Port Townsend; Pemberton is self-distributing them as well. He can be reached at pembertonbrett@hotmail.com.
"It's a marvel to be from a small town and see things happening for me," said Pemberton."It brings me hope." - Peninsula Daily News

"Musician finds niche in Pop and Rock"

Musician finds niche with pop and rock
Brett Pemberton's "The House of Deceit and Lies" to debut at Peninsula College.

by ASHLEY ODEN
Staff writer

He grew up in the small city of Port Townsend, but Brett Pemberton always had big dreams. He will celebrate the debut release of his album, "The House of Deceit and Lies," at a Peninsula College noon concert, March 22.

The concert is an opportunity for college students to get up and perform what they have been working on as well as meet Pemberton and listen to his latest music.

"My music is introspective and experimental pop rock," he said. "The genre is not as important as the song itself though."
"The house of Deceit and Lies" is his first solo CD released.

"The most interesting part about completely doing it myself is promoting me and only me, " he said. "When major industry people take interest in you it is a huge blessing."

In the past, he has led his own bands and was the drummer for The Hollow Points, signed by Disaster Records.

In addition to music, Pemberton has also tried his hand at modeling and acting. He has worked with Heffner Model Management and Future Models, has starred in multiple commercials and appeared as an extra in the movie, "Snow Falling on Cedars."

He performed in this year's "Seattle Stars," a local voice competition that will air at 9 p.m. March 16 on KIRO News Channel 7.

Pemberton attributes his ambition and success to his parents.

"They have been immeasurably supportive," he said.
His future plans are simple. "I want to be satisfied with what I have because I have been so blessed with my career."

And of course, he plans to write, record and release more music.

"IMPRESARIO TURNS UP THE VOLUME IN PT"

July 8th, 2005 issue, Peninsula Daily News, Olympic Peninsula newspaper. By Nick Koveshnikov: Musician, recording technician prepares to release original CD. PORT TOWNSEND: In a town where open mic events, spontaneous street performances and backyard get-togethers define the music scene, multi-instrumentalists like BRETT PEMBERTON stand out for their sound and promotional strategy. After establishing himself playing drums for popular local alternative band The Hollowpoints (Disaster Records) and guitar/vocals for Waiting for the Sun, PEMBERTON, 19, is going solo. And with 200 orders for his upcoming debut release, “The House of Deceit and Lies, he has proven that he knows how to market himself. That quality, together with Pemberton's musical abilities, sets him apart from the rest of the Port Townsend music scene. Port Townsend’s music scene is pretty vibrant, but a lot of folks don’t promote themselves as well, said Steve Wilmart, owner of Port Townsend music store Quimper Sound Music and Tapes, 901 Water St. where the new release is anticipated on shelves on Monday. “When Brett’s putting on a show, you can be sure that the house is going to be full. On his CD, Pemberton sings and plays all the instruments: bass, drums and guitar. He wrote lyrics to the 12 tracks. “It’s a therapy album,?Pemberton said. “It’s about love, spiritual progress. It’s poetic rock and not rock. It’s a combination of cliche statements, most of it is pretty poppy. My heart is into simple stuff. Career starts early His career began early. “I built my first amplifier at the age of 8,he said, and then described the ensuing process. “You ruin a lot of stereo equipment and you make it work." By the age of 9, Pemberton had his first recording experience with two tape recorders and various instruments. At the age of 14, he set up a recording studio in his family’s garage and recorded his friends until his equipment was stolen. His father replaced the stolen gear about a year ago, buying a fully equipped studio from a friend. Since then, Pemberton has set up a temporary studio in a friend’s home south of Fort Worden and recorded at least five Port Townsend youth bands and several musicians. he is a true Port Townsend impresario. The real mover and shaker, said Michael Townsend, an employee at Quimper Sound Music and Tapes. Pemberton has been around Port Townsend’s music scene since he was 10. “The scene is so cool and so small,?he said, “and it kind of only exists because all of the kids love it so much and try to keep it alive." Besides recording his own material, Pemberton helps capture the sound of his peers. He agreed to record Port Townsend punk band The Nihilists in exchange for a day of pulling weeds around the house. Other bands, like the Trophy Wives and the Inkreats, walked away from his studio with demos, recorded at reduced price, Pemberton said. Music Community “The benefit that he adds to the Port Townsend music community "he energizes what sometimes could be a sleepy scene," said Wilmart. “Sometimes people have ideas, but Brett pretty much does everything he talks about. “I think that it’s good for other kids to see that you can be heard. - Peninsula Daily News,
