Bio

Brett Segal, home-grown in South Florida, is truly a musician’s musician.  Born in Miami, Florida, Brett was raised in a family of musicians.  His mother, acclaimed folk artist, Ellen Bukstel, began teaching him music from an early age.  He eventually grew to fit his natural musical abilities when he decided to become a drummer.  Influenced by artists, such as the Dave Matthews Band and Rush, at the age of seventeen, he went on a fast track to becoming a professional performing and studio drummer.  He began reading a writing music a soon as he started music.  Directly out of high school, he attended the Studio Jazz Program at Florida International University.  There, he met like-minded musicians as he came into his own unique style of drumming.  He quickly gravitated toward drummers such as Gavin Harrison, Marco Minneman, Dave Weckl, Dennis Chanbers and Carter Beauford.  Brett found he had a searing interest and an uncanny knack for hearing and comprehending complex rhythms. He teamed up with Alex Prisc, to form Nigh Horizon (formerly known as Fractal), a Progressive Rock band prides that itself on integrated songs that combine meaningful lyrics with interesting rhythms, odd time feels, and complex, yet seamless arrangements that easily stand in today’s commercial music world.  After a while, Brett began to take interest in recording his drumming and the music of his projects.  As a means to-an-ends, he learned the ins and outs of sound recording and studio/live sound engineering.  He never realized where that would lead.  After learning to use his mothers old recording gear by recording several demo recordings for Nigh Horizon, he learned that he had another talent – music production.  Soon after, Brett opened the Shack in the Back Productions – a full-service recording studio where he acts as the Chief Engineer and Producer.  In addition to being the resident studio drummer at “The Shack,” he produces and engineers demos and albums of any style.  Brett has particularly made a name for himself in the folk community.  His productions have been played on radio stations across the globe.  Brett's song productions have won countless competitions and have been given accolades from artists such as Michael Bolton, Run DMC, Peter, Paul and Mary and many more.  Brett has proved to be one of the most multi-dimensional up-and-comers on the music scene today.  He combines his expert knowledge of music and drumming with his keen insights into the production and engineering world to make creative music that is beautiful, meaningful and marketable.
