The Brett Walberg Group is a 10 year old project that has shifted and altered through the time. As a native of Massachusetts, Brett worked both in the Boston and Providence scenes, performing and composing with some of the best and brightest. Currently the band is lead in two scenes, with two separate groupings of players, compositions, and playing styles. The connecting factor is the energy and sheer unadulterated creativity that is innate within each player. The BWG derives their unique sound from the whole of the jazz idiom as well as working a great deal with other mediums of creativity. There has been a large focus on the connection between visual art and jazz within the BWG, leading to projects such as "Conversations: An Art and Music Collective", "Jazz at the ARTery" and "Cinema by Sound". Each of these projects has had a motif within the visual art spectrum, such as abstract expressionism, photography, and videography. Each member of the band has spent time in many different outfits within the jazz spectrum, which lends itself to the highly creative and lucid style of the band. Each band member has committed themselves as students to the music as well as the overall energy that is provided through the music; a pillar in the foundation of BWG. Current members in the East Coast BWG are Brett Walberg on woodwinds/compositions, Matt Mahoney on Bass, Jeremy Quick on Guitar, and Jungho Kang. In the Midwest branch of the BWG, it is compiled of Jon Moss on Bass, and Mark Leveling on Drums. Notable former players are Michael Chasse, Justin Oliver, James Miranda, and Alexei Tsaginov, who all have both provided great depth and pedigree to the group. Currently the BWG is working on several records that will be due out during the next year, the soonest being early Spring.
