Musician's passion drives him cross-country

The year 2006 is barely two months old. But, Brian Francis Baudoin has put thousands of miles on his truck since Jan. l.
Baudoin's 300 shows a year for the last six years can be hard on a vehicle. That time also can provide inspiration for a singer/ songwriter who makes his living as a one-man show
a man and his guitar.
"I was in Manhattan and ended up playing at a place called The Bitter End," said Baudoin, 30, of Broussard. "I keep asking people which way's south, because I was lost. I ended up in New Jersey.
"People said 'How far south do you want to go?' I i said 'South of I-10.' They
don't know what the hell I'm talking about. I said 'By the water.'
"They thought I meant the Atlantic. They'd tell me 'That's not south, that's east.' I'm like, 'No man, south of I10.' I ended up thinking about it the whole way back down. I wrote the song driving all the way from Manhattan to Lafayette."
The experience gave birth to South of I10, one of 30 original . songs in Baudoin's repertoire. Baudoin travels from Los Angeles to Nashville to New York playing his acoustic guitar and singing at clubs, bars, pubs, festivals, conventions, casinos and more.
He's recorded four CDs of originals about family, friends, influences and

life on the road. It's a challenging existence that manages to feed his wife and three children. It also allows him to work as a rare full-time musician among the thousands of South Louisiana artists who can only afford to do it part time.
Baudoin played road houses and bars in California and Tuscaloosa, Ala., last December. He admits he sometimes has to break out the tip jar in a roadside honky tonk for gas money to get back home.
But Baudoin adds the payoff goes way beyond money.
"I feel like it's a calling," Baudoin said.
"When you find something that you're good at and you keep getting better at and it touches people, it's not so much about me, but what other people are getting out of it.
"I have people come up to me and tell me that the songs moved them so much, they played them at their brother's funeral. I had people get married to some of the stuff I write.
"It's not on the big shot level, but the real level. I write about stuff that's pretty much going on in my life or that relates to what's going on at the time."
Baudoin is set to play Thursday at The Bunker in Breaux Bridge, returns Friday to Tequila Junction in Shreveport and entertains Saturday at a Mardi Gras party in Jefferson, Texas.
Brian Francis Baudoin performs for the crowd at Broussard's Bar and Grill recently. Baudoin puts on about 300 one-man shows - just him and his guitar - a year, traveling thousands of miles to reach his audiences. StacY Conradl Special to The
