Brian Katz

Brian Katz

BandFolkSinger/Songwriter

Dynamo indie folk songs to set your soul ablaze. Brian Katz's songs are energetic, passionate, and skillful with soaring harmonies and deft guitar work. His music is reminiscent of current artists such as Fleet Foxes, Bon iver and Mumford & Sons.

Biography

In the valleys of Honduras Brian Katz honed his craft, spending hours secluded with his guitar. The result was a set of songs, a desire to share them, and some recordings that would evolve into the San Pedro Sula Sessions EP released in July 2012.

The music was described by Matthew Coleman of Music Court Blog as, "brusque and delicate, almost Hemingway-esque. It mixes the midwestern Americana branded by Tom Petty and Neil Young, with modern Dylan-inspired folk created by bands like the Fleet Foxes."

As a multi-instrumentalist and singer, the entirety of the project was written and performed by Brian while in Honduras. His music featured fingerstyle guitar work and flowing harmonies. "Katz’s vocal is certainly Neil Young-like. His voice can get up there and it rises in the verse skillfully and melodically". Interwoven into the music are complex rhythms, deep bass, and swirling synthesizers.

A demo from these sessions was submitted to the judges at the International Songwriting Competition. They deemed the track, "There Have Been Times" one of the strongest entries of 2011 in the folk category and a semi-finalist.

After two years of teaching abroad in Central America, Brian recently moved to Toronto, Ontario where he will perform his music and begin work on a full-length album currently titled, "Spark".

Lost Between the Lines

Written By: Brian Katz

Lost Between the Lines
There came letter just last week,
It said you were around by St. Martin’s Creek,
And I went to the sea,
To feel the wind behind my back,
Riding the waves while the thunder cracked.

Sometimes I get lost between the lines,
Not holding on or following the signs,
I never listened to the stars,
Nor travelled very far,
I never tried too hard,
To know you.

Word came around years ago,
That Martha was taken by the undertow,
And I went to the sea,
To listen to the sound of rain,
Against my boat off the coasts of Spain.

Sometimes I get lost between the lines,
Not holding on or following the signs,
I never listened to the stars,
Nor travelled very far,
I never tried too hard,
To know you.

Her daddy said we wouldn’t marry,
That all was said and done,
So I took the morning ferry,
With a bottle of wine and my fifty-one,
Oh, I, dreamed of sailing around the world…

So I will leave you all alone,
Don’t you call,
There’s nobody home.
