Old Dirt Road

Written By: Brian R Smalley

Old Dirt Road

I grew up on an old dirt road
In a little brown house my grandpa owned
That’s where my parents would fuss and fight
When dad was late on Friday nights.
I’d sit with him in that old Ford Truck.
He’d tell me how that road had changed.
Families left and folks moved in
He said nothing ever stayed the same.
he said that, “memories and the emotions they hold
Can make you weep or be a strong hold.
Whatever I do or where ever I go
I’ll always feel at home on this old dirt road.”

There was a girl who lived two houses up.
I’d tap on her window and wake her up.
And we’d walk past the maples and jump the stone wall
sit in the meadow and look at stars while we talked.
One day she packed up and she moved out;
I ain’t never seen her since.
I wonder sometimes if she ever thinks
About that dirt road and the things that we said.
She told me, “Growing up in a house that’s so cold
Makes me fierce, makes me bold,
And there’s one thing for sure I know,
I don’t want to grow old on this old dirt road.”

Then I got restless waiting on dreams.
There’s so much to see when you’re seventeen.
You ain’t at ease with what you have.
I turn my back and packed my bags.

The years rolled by I was grown an gone;
Ma called and said, “Your dads almost gone,
And your old man’s lungs are giving up
From fixing breaks on trailer trucks.”
So I went back to see him one last time.
I wheeled him out down by the road.
The folks driving by I didn’t recognize;
My old dirt road is dry old bones.
My memories just need a tombstone
Cause there’s nothing left but the afterglow.
My childhood is overthrown;
You can’t get back to that old dirt road.

Bringing Me Back to You

Bringing Me Back to You

I’m in bed but my mind’s a tire spinning on lose dirt.
Come 5 a.m. I gotta get up from this bed an get to work.
I need my sleep cause there’s so much that I’ve got to do,
But my mind keeps bringing me back to you.

Yesterday the boss called me into his office to talk.
He said, “Son I’ve been noticing a lack of focus on the job.”
I shrugged my shoulders cause I’ve just got one excuse:
My mind keeps bringing me back to you.

You’re on my mind all the time darling what can I do?
You haunt my thoughts, can’t turn you off,
And I guess that it’s true
My mind keeps bringing me back to you.

You’re a final exam. You’re a little white lie.
On Monday morning you’re plans on Friday night.
You’re everything a man can’t get off his mind.
You’re a catchy song. You’re waiting in line.

After work last night I was on my drive home,
I don’t remember seeing one signpost on the road.
Didn’t know I drove right by my house ‘til yours came into view.
My mind keeps bringing me back to you.

You’re on my mind all the time darling what can I do?
You haunt my thoughts, can’t turn you off,
And I guess that it’s true
My mind keeps bringing me back to you.
My mind keeps bringing me back to you.

One Step Behind

Written By: Brian R Smalley

Do do do do
Do do do do
Do do do do do

She set her mind and she set out after him
A shadow at his heel
She’s a soldier to conquer her loneliness
Win his love, and prevail
But another’s heart is a warrior
It’s Cunning, sly, and wild
Limped through the battle and lost the day
Still one step behind

Do do do do
Do do do do
(Do do do do do) still one step behind

chase your security through the wilderness
Tracking down success
Oh when you catch it, it’s a slippery snake And it
wraps right around your wrist
The beast is your master when you master it
It Overpowers your mind
You caught your dream now you gotta live with it
Still one step behind

Do do do do
Do do do do
(Do do do do do) still one step behind

One step behind, one step behind
A wet rock on the raging riverside
Slip, trip, stumble, slide

Do do do do
Do do do do
(Do do do do do) still one step behind

She set her mind and she set out after him
A shadow at his heel
She’s a soldier to conquer her loneliness
Win his love, and prevail
The beast is your master when you master it
It Overpowers your mind
You caught your dream now you gotta live with it
Still one step behind
