Biography

Brian Russell is a composer/writer/director based in Chicago. He started playing piano at age five, composing music at eight, and acting at twelve. By his late teens, he’d given up acting and moved into directing, working across the country as a music director and a stage director of plays, musicals and operas. For ten years he combined theater administration with his artistic work, serving as associate artistic director of Northlight Theatre from 1993-97 and producing artistic director of American Theater Company from 1997-2002. These days, he spends much of his time writing and composing and working as an artist-in-residence at The Breakthrough Group, a consulting firm that uses story and strategic conversation to build individual and organizational capabilities of our clients, mostly Fortune 500 companies. He also does some private voice and acting coaching and has served on the faculties of Loyola University Theatre Department, Playwrights Horizons Theatre School at New York University (where he received his training) and the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music. He also served for four years on the board of the League of Chicago Theatres; is a member of the Society of Stage Directors and Choreographers and the American Guild of Musical Artists; and serves as an on-site reporter for the National Endowment for the Arts.

Lyrics

The Night, My Baby, and Me

Written By: Brian Russell

Don’t need another scotch and soda
Don’t need another cigarette
I don’t a cabin by the ocean
Don’t need a mansion in the sky
I don’t need another dry martini
Don’t need another power lunch
I don’t need my fifteen minutes of fame now
Don’t need a record on the charts

I want a peaceful night
With the lights down low
And I’ll cuddle up tight
With this girl I know
I want an hour or two
Just my baby and me
We know what to do
With the night, my baby, and me

I don’t need a condo in a high-rise
Don’t need a doorman in the hall
I don’t need to have a lot of money
Cause money can’t buy me what I need at all
Don’t need a limo, don’t need a driver
I don’t need a private airplane
I don’t need to have a bunch of credit cards in my wallet
No thanks all the same

I want a peaceful night
With the lights down low
I’m gonna cuddle up tight
With this girl I know
I want an hour or three
Just my baby and me
It’s just gonna be
The night, my baby, and me

So you can keep your scotch and soda
Keep your mansions in the sky
You can keep your dry martini
Honey I don’t need to fly
And you can keep your high-rise condo
Keep that doorman in the hall
And you can keep that new hit single
I don’t need that stuff at all

I just want a peaceful night
With the lights turned down low
I’m gonna cuddle up tight
With this girl I know
I want an hour or four
With my baby and me
Listen I don’t need more
Than the night, my baby, and me
Oh, just the night, my baby, my baby and me
I just need the night, my loving baby, and me

Grandma Said

Written By: Music: Brian Russell Lyrics: Brian Russell, Gloria Almada, Melanie Bishop

If you were born to hang you’ll never drown
If you were born to hang you’ll never drown
If you were born a mime you ain’t never gonna be a clown
If you were born to hang you’ll never drown

If you were born with wings you’ll likely fly
If you were born with wings you’ll likely fly
If you were born to live forever then you probably ain’t never gonna die
If you were born with wings you’ll likely fly
If you were born to hang you’ll never drown

If you were born with gills you better learn how to swim
If you were born with gills you better learn how to swim
And if they called you Dan when you were born you ain’t likely to ever be called Jim
If you were born to hang you’ll never drown

If you were born with ears you’re meant to hear
If you were born with ears I hope you can hear
You know I just cannot wait until the next time you are near
If you were born with ears you’re meant to hear
If you were born to hang you’ll never drown

If you were born with eyes you’re meant to see
If you were born with eyes you’re meant to see
And if you do you’ll see that you and me were meant to be
If you were born with eyes you’re meant to see

I was born to be with you
Yeah, I was born to be with you I know
And I pray that you were born to be with me too
‘Cause I know that I was born to be with you

If you were born to hang you’ll never drown
If you were born to hang you’ll never drown my Grandma said
What must I do to make sure that you stick around
If you were born to hang you’ll never drown
If you were born to hang you’ll never drown

Sally and Me

Written By: Brian Russell

Now Sally lived outside of Lincoln, Nebraska
I met her on a business trip out in L.A.
We spent each minute we could every night I was out there
And I told her to call if she ever got out my way

She told me she was just looking for some fun
She told me she didn’t want to fall in love

Now Emily lived with her mother out in Seattle
We talked on the phone for hours at a time
Night after night after night we would lie in the darkness
Sharing our deepest desires over the line

I told her I was just looking for some fun
I told her I didn’t want to fall in love

Barbara from Boston her husband had moved out to Memphis
Her business brought her to Chicago once every month
I saw her a few times when she stayed at the Hilton
We’d spend Saturday night and then Sunday brunch

She knew I was looking for some fun
She knew I didn’t want to fall in love

I don’t want to lead you better not follow
I don’t want to follow you better not lead
I just want someone lying beside me
We’ll give each other some real good memories

Sally from Nebraska was coming through Chicago
She had a couple of hours to kill between flights
So I drove out to O’Hare to see her
I met her at security and said let’s go grab a bite

By the time we got to the car I could sense something changing
My hands were sweaty and my head feeling light
After we ate I said baby let’s go back to my place
And Sally has stayed right here with me since that night

Cause we were both just looking for some fun
Sally and me that night we fell in love

I don’t want to lead you better not follow
I don’t want to follow you better not lead
I just want you walking beside me
We’ll give each other a reason to believe

I don’t want to lead you better not follow
I don’t want to follow you better not lead
I just want Sally lying beside me
We give each other a reason to believe
