"Young Sandwich Musicians Collaborate for a Cause"

Posted on December 11, 2009.
By DAVID A. FONSECA

When Brian V. Sances of Sandwich heard the call for local musicians to lend their talents to the annual NOAH Pledge-A-Bed Telethon, supporting the NOAH Shelter in Hyannis, he knew he had two calls to make.

Mr. Sances, who provides lead guitar and vocals for the band TRIPL3CROWN, first called good friend and longtime collaborator Charles F. McElroy Jr. of Forestdale, commonly known to local hip-hop fans as Ceej.

His next call was to the telethon's entertainment committee, letting them know that if they wanted his contribution, they had it.

"How could I pass something like this up?" Mr. Sances asked.

He said he was motivated to lend his support to the telethon because of the path he has taken to becoming a thriving local musician.

Today, his life revolves around music. In addition to recording original material, TRIPL3CROWN is booked almost nightly at local venues. Along with his gig as a guitar instructor at Mode4Music Studios in Hyannis, Mr. Sances said he is able to make a living through music.

It wasn’t always this way, he explained.

"I couldn't be doing any of the things I'm doing now, playing in a band, teaching guitar lessons to young people, if I was still living the kind of lifestyle I did in my younger days," he said. "Not only would the opportunities have never been presented to me, they would have fallen apart."

Mr. Sances, 27, said he was able to escape the kind of unhealthy lifestyle that ensnares a lot of young people on Cape Cod mostly through the help of his faith, his girlfriend, his family, and his devotion to music.

He said every time he steps into a local bar to perform his music, he is reminded of how music is keeping him clean and sober, allowing him to be the person he wants to be.

That is why he said he feels obligated to use his music, his gift, to help others who have not been so fortunate.

Ceej, 25, said he instantly agreed to collaborate with Mr. Sances for the telethon.

"Right away, I said yes. I'm always down for any kind of musical collaboration with Brian," Ceej said.

As a musician, he said he is inspired by the hip-hop pioneers like KRS-ONE, Talib Kweli, and Mos Def, who helped establish the genre's socially conscious and intellectual roots.

"Hip-hop has a bad reputation among a lot of people. They think it's negative, demeaning, superficial...but it's not," he said.

What drew him to performing, he said, was hip-hop's ability to bring together a diverse audience, while spreading an uplifting message, without preaching.

The duo decided to rework the track "Judgement Day," which appears on Ceej's newest album "The Answer," for the telethon.

Mr. Sances put together an acoustic guitar version of the track's beat, which was composed by Falmouth DJ P-Dub, provided a guitar solo and added some additional lyrics.

Ceej's lyrics were inspired by a recent summer he spent in Brazil, where he observed the chasm between the "filthy rich and extremely poor."

The song is about the assumptions we make about those who end up living on streets and how they get there.

"You can get laid off, and not have any family or friends around to help you through; it could happen to anybody," he said. "And it's a quick transition."

The NOAH Shelter, Cape Cod's only emergency housing shelter, is a 60-bed facility in Hyannis that serves more than 500 homeless individuals each year.

The shelter's services include substance abuse counseling, mental health counseling, health care services, medical case management, legal clinics, housing search, HIV/AIDS prevention, educational services, and job search assistance.

The annual pledge-a-bed telethon will be televised on Wednesday, December 16, from 4 to 9 PM on local access Channels 13 or 17 from Provincetown to Bourne.

Callers can make individual donations to the shelter or sponsor a bed in the shelter for $45 a month.

Bio

At 28, Brian is releasing his first solo album August 26th 2010. Entitled "Here Today", it is a celebration of living life in the present moment, sharing it with those you love, and pursuing your calling. Not only did Brian write, produce, and record the songs on this album, he also played guitar, bass, organ, harmonica, auxiliary percussion, and provided vocals on all of the songs. He called upon 3 drummers and a few special guests to help him complete this vision, and after 6 months, it was finished. Brian plans to play as many shows as possible this fall to promote this new album, and share his music with the world.
