"Bridget is both a talented visual artist and a contemporary roots-pop singer-songwriter who is armed with a powerful voice and a compelling artistic vision. Her goal with her debut album, according to her website, was to perform a collection of uplifting, inspirational and socially conscious songs to counteract some of the doom and gloom of our current era. It’s not a Pollyannaish record by any means, and not all of the songs are about love, healing, and empowerment. For example, Bridget, who draws inspiration from her Mi’kmaq ancestry, wrote “A Canoe and a Ship” about the relationship between settlers and Indigenous people in Canada – but even that song is really a celebration of the strength and resilience of Indigenous people and an anthem of hope for a better outcome to come. It also happens to be bathed in an infectious electric guitar riff that’s distantly reminiscent of the one in Toto’s “Africa.” In fact, the production and instrumentation on this album are extremely diverse, thanks no doubt to producer/arranger Chris Birkett, who has worked with the ever-innovative Buffy Sainte-Marie. You can even hear Harpin’ Norm Lucien on harmonica in places". - Gordy the Moose
Overall Impression: Bridget Melody draws from indigenous Mi'kmaq roots to deliver a bright and bouncing slice of original Indie Folk celebrating "The Waters of Gaspe"! Timeless vocal tones soar above a colorful blend of plucked strings, playful accordion and thunderous drums as Bridget lovingly conveys an inviting image of the life and lore that permeates "The Waters of Gaspe
Strongest Point(s): There's a wonderful vibrancy to "The Waters of Gaspe" - from Bridget's vocal approach to the instrumentation that supports it! Bright and clear, Bridget's vocals brilliantly define the feel and flow of the song and gesture nicely towards highly celebrated eras of Folk artistry. The connection from the artist to the location brings the lyrics to full life as well, blending well with the instrumentals to communicate a sense of awe and excitement for the bay and its beneficiaries. Great instrumental performances throughout, and a well-selected blend of voices for the style - especially the interplay between harmonica and accordion!
Target Audience Appeal: Bridget Melody's sound and style stand to catch the attentions and win the affections of any fan of classic Folk feels - and the specific subject matter and lyrical passion on display in "The Waters of Gaspe" promise to intrigue listeners from a wide range of backgrounds, whether they've heard of the bay or not!
