Bio

Bright Lightning landed in Sweden from the Southern California desert region in the summer of 1985 on the California State University of San Bernardino college exchange program. He met a girl and Swedish romance kept him in Sweden now going on 25 years. It is not a unique story but it his story.

During that first year, he worked at collage radio in Uppsala, where he also played in some bands. He started making contacts and being the “rubbad utter” (=Crazed Otter) he is, he worked like hell to try and get a record deal, which unfortunately always seemed to escape him.

After a few years and some experimentation and tired of band politics he had enough and stopped looking for a record deal. He devoted his time to working in the music industry yet did not stop writing songs though. He released a record on his own to celebrate his birthday and felt he finally got the record out that he had always dreamed about. But like potato chips, one is never enough…

In early 2006, Bright Lightning meets with Ill Wind Records. He plays them a single that he has recorded and they like it and agree to distribute it in Scandinavia. A spark is hit and the fire slowly starts to burn and Bright Lightning starts writing songs again..

In the hot Scandinavia summer of 2006, he gets a deal and spent two weeks recording at Seawolf studios on the island of Suomenlinna (Sveaborg) outside of Helsinki’s harbor.. This is the studio where Franz Ferdinand, The Bellrays, Mark Lanegan and Hanoi Rocks have recorded.

The musicians in the recording session were:
Sami “Kuoppis” Kuoppamaki - drums (Zook, f.d. Kingston Wall)
Petri Peevo - guitar, (The Flaming Sideburns)
Joakim Jähnke – bass
Lauri Murtomaa - guitar (Clifters).

Virpi Immonen who produced most of the album invited many guest to take part on some of the songs: Sammy Aaltonen and Elias Logren of Private Line, Marko Saaresto of Poets Of The Fall, Swedish guitarist Conny Bloom of Hanoi Rocks, Mathau Mikonoja formerly of Bloodpit, Milla Palovaara of Thee UltraBimboos/Shake, and the ever so talented Maria Hänninen who blew BL away with her natural Nashville-style backing vocals.

Then the company consolidates with another and decides to focus on another style of music and a few artists were let go including BL. A year of sorting out the purchase of the master back and finding Antto Tuomainen a young upcoming producer from Tampere Finland via a tip from the manager of the band Negative, the album was mixed June 2008. In addition, two new songs were recorded at The Farm in Bällinge with producer J. Green and mixed by Johan Prüts. That complimented and completed the album’s tracklisting.

The songs recorded in Sweden features some of the following musicians:
Tomas Hedquist – programming, acoustic guitar and great backing vocals on Lifetown
Gunnar Danielsson (from Rock Therapy) – electric guitars and backing vocals
Joakim Jähnke – Bass
Lars Tengroth – electric and acoustic guitars
J. Green – mandolin, dobro, Telecaster electric guitars and backing vocals
Fredrik Söderström – drums
Linda Malmström - backing vocals
Niklas Blank – Harmonica on Son (b-side to single)

It was a long road to now. The first single which is the title track of the album and features a duet with Marko Saaresto, (of Platinum Record selling Finnish rock band – Poets Of The Fall), it is to be released Aug 11.
Being a musician and working in the music industry can be a double edge sword. But Bright Lightning had to follow the dream and it is soon available who enjoy country rock with edge and a mixture melancholic-romanticism and biting lyrics. There is a free track about the record business available on his MySpace site entitled “We Read The Lefsetz Letters (Back Slappin’ Buddies)” which is available now.

Bright Lightning now lives in the countryside of Östuna, Sweden and he still loves to write songs and record them. He is part Swedish part American and part Finnish (by tattoo) and enjoys being with his family. He never quits being a fan…

• The new album TAKING A VACATION FROM ME will be released January 26th, 2009 on Playground Music Scandinavia and is licensed from his label Stormstreet Records.
