Bio

Born 21.10.1978 in Hornindal, Sogn og Fjordane, Norway.
Educated at Ole Bull Academy and Rauland Academy (MA in Traditional Arts).
In addition to a solid musical education, she was born into a family that has nurtured traditional music and has brought many musicians into the world, and she has played the fiddle from the age of nine. The heritage given by her family, through each generation, goes back to her great-great-grandmother, who would hum dances and tunes. These were, over the years, transferred to the fiddle, and Britt Pernille has a consciousness regarding the protection of this treasure for posterity. This is unique material which has not previously been written down.

The Hardanger fiddle is her main instrument, and her first solo album came out in January 2008, which was very well received. The Oslo newspapers gave it five out of six, and Oppland Arbeiderblad wrote: “Frøholm plays the instrument with natural authority, joy and with a great sense of nuances. Each stroke is as charged with a long line of fiddle playing in her backbone. … Frøholm is an eminent and versatile musician…”
VG: “Cheeky, fresh and irresistible.”
Dagbladet: “A gate to the universe of the Hardanger fiddle.”
Aftenposten: “…rich in nuance and with a presence in the execution”
Sunnmørsposten: “Forceful… Stimulating…”

The need to explore the characteristic sound of the Hardanger fiddle led to an MA, and later on to a cooperation with the contemporary composer Therese Birkelund. Birkelund has written especially for the musician and her Hardanger fiddle, and exciting music will come of this on a CD later this year.

This spring another surprise will come from this versatile musician. A CD with the group LukcyLoop. They describe their music as “free improvisation”.

“For allje dei (“For all those”) is Britt Pernille Frøholm’s debut album and contains Hardanger fiddle music with a special focus on Hornindal in the Nordfjord region. Hornindal has rich folk music traditions, and is a rural district that has fostered strong, individual artists who all have contributed to the creation of a very unique style of music.

For allje dei contains a selection of this music, with dances and song tunes, mainly executed as solos on the Hardanger fiddle, but also with some dances played together with Irene Tillung on the accordion.

For allje dei is an album with great variety, ranging from energetic dances, to tender and fragile song tunes, contrasted by explosive and feisty duets with the accordion. We are also treated to some previously unknown dances from Hornindal, published for the first time on CD.
This album brings you brilliant Hardanger fiddle playing from one of the most unique folk musicians in the country.
Audun Strype’s delicate production enhances the details both in the playing and in the Hardanger fiddle itself, and shows to the full how dynamic and rich in nuances the folk music from Nordfjord is.

For allje dei displays a musician with great range and ability to convey personal stories through the music, and you can now take part in it. We wish you a pleasant listening experience!
