Bio

Broadfoot is a band based on the Far North Coast of NSW with members from Mullumbimby, Byron Bay and Murwillumbah. They would have to be one of the busiest bands on the North Coast - often gigging three times a week. In August 2010 Broadfoot won the North Coast Entertainment Industry Association award (NCEIA Dolphin Award) for best funk song (The Timeless Groove), were also nominated as finalists for best emerging talent and have been invited to perform at this year’s award ceremony. Broadfoot were due to take part in the inaugural Nimbin Music Festival as part of the award for winning the funk category but after teething problems the Festival has been slated for 2011. Broadfoot enjoyed a fantastic response to their festival debut at Kirra Surfstock November 2010, loving the huge sound on that joyous afternoon, and even transient listeners at nearby bus stops and in passing cars found it impossible not to groove along.

Broadfoot offer every crowd music that they love to dance to - something that audiences all over the North Coast can attest to, from the Hotel Brunswick to Lennox Hotel to the Great Northern in Byron. Broadfoot's music is deeply rooted in superb musicianship - the interplay between band members as well as improvising - a rare feature in music of today, one of Broadfoot's strengths.

Broadfoot are inspired by an enormous range of music, musicians and music styles - from classic 50's, 60's and 70's rock to blues music, reggae, jazz, soul, disco, funk, country, folk, classical, just about any style. They defy easy classification but one thing is universally agreed on – the music is brilliant!

In terms of lineup, Broadfoot is Matt Cleary and John Moodie on electric guitars, Cliff Fletcher on bass and drummer Trent Morgan (who at time simultaneously plays harmonica). All four members share lead vocals, with true harmonies a feature of their live sound. The choice of instruments used by Broadfoot says a lot about the music. Classic electric guitars, Strats, Flying V's, Explorers, Firebirds, Fender jazz bass, vintage Marshall amp, vintage Ampeg bass amp and vintage drums of differing makes including Gretsch, Ludwig, Slingerland, Rogers and Trixon. This is music performed passionately and with purpose, designed to bring smiles to the faces of the audience and the musicians. When Broadfoot play it is time to let your hair down and enjoy yourself.

Broadfoot have been together for more than four years, gigging incessantly, predominantly around their local area in nearly all available venues, from local markets to the iconic large North Coast hotels. In the past couple of years Broadfoot have completed whirlwind Summer tours to Sydney and the Blue Mountains where they have been welcomed back to each venue they’ve played. Highlights this year included a Saturday afternoon gig at Sydney's Opera Bar and headlining Blackheath's Fine Food and Wine Festival. Broadfoot performed live in the studio on Bay FM in February 2010, playing five songs and were interviewed about their background, maintaining admirable composure amidst the morning’s frequently updated tsunami warnings for the East coast of Australia. Broadfoot returned to the Bay FM studios in March 2011 performing songs from the “Straight Between Us” album as well as being freshly interviewed. In May 2011 Broadfoot became the first non-acoustic act to broadcast live from the ABC Radio North Coast studio, playing two songs as well as being interviewed about subjects such as the music scene on the North Coast amongst other topics about the band. Trent on behalf of the band has twice had a guest programming spot on Nimbin Radio NIMFM’s Sidetracks programme.

The band revels in the spectrum of opportunities abounding on the Far North Coast music scene, their CV sparkling with gigs that city bands can only dream about including headlining Nimbin’s Aquarius Foundation Benefit in 2010 and the Movember Foundation “Morning Of The Mo” afterparty at Byron’s Great Northern Hotel.

Broadfoot have recorded two albums, with material being written and recorded towards a third at present. Exposure on JJJ’s Unearthed site has led to some interesting opportunities, including providing music for a segment for marine awareness group Our Blue Backyard, and the invitation to appear in July’s “Off The Record” compilation CD. The band has been getting busier every year and is now performing over 100 gigs per year. This means that the band is tight and extremely adaptable to an audience's requirements. Their ever expanding range of vibrant original material can be complemented when required by a dip into the band’s heady reservoir of covers where the diverse and interesting selection reflects the musical tastes and influences of the different band members.

Motivated by a shared and consuming love of playing music anywhere, any time, Broadfoot are a refreshingly unpretentious and professional unit, impressing many venues by making the behind the scenes as
