"Weekend Jam Packed With Musical Offerings"

Thursday, August 16, 2007
Weekend jam-packed with musical offerings

If you want to hang with a Hudson Valley musician who is pretty dedicated to his craft, check out Tim Whalen.

I haven't run into him in a while, but for a while there we were crossing paths - at the High Falls Cafe, Mountain Jam and Jack and Luna's Cafe in Stone Ridge - during their jazz nights. Whalen is a drummer and his band is the North Country Boys.

He has described them as alt-country, which I would say is pretty accurate.

"We draw from a bunch of influences, traditional, blues, bluegrass, with a jam-band twist on it," said Whalen, a math teacher who lives in Stone Ridge. "We jam out that kind of stuff."

The North Country Boys are scheduled to perform Saturday night at the Rosendale Cafe. Now, I've seen them at the High Falls Cafe, and they fit that place like a glove.

The Rosendale Cafe seems like a good fit as well for a trio that can jam out hard on acoustic roots music.

"The North Country Boys, Jerry Marotta and Jill Stevenson"

Friday, May 18, 2007

The North Country Boys, Jerry Marotta and Jill Stevenson
Tonight, Friday, May 18, has got some good stuff happening on the local music front.

First off, let's look at the North Country Boys at the High Falls Cafe in where else, High Falls. These guys play alt-country, bluegrass, jamband-y kind of stuff. These guys play acoustic original and covers, with a very genuine approach, no bells and whistles and no gimmicks.

Just a straight-forward, hands-on approach to home-made music.

Their lead guitar player is one of the best I've scene and the drummer, Tim Whalen, teaches school in Stone Ridge and lives locally as well. Tim is one of those EXTREMELY enthusiastic music people, who seems to eat, breathe and drink music. He talks about his band, their music and their projects the way a diehard Yankee fan might talk about an opening day, grand slam home run that saves the day in the ninth inning.

I often see Tim out at area music events. He always has something new to talk about musically, be it a concert he has attended or a gig coming up or simply a great rehearsal the North Country Boys just underwent.

I strongly urge folks to go out, support local music and show the North Country Boys that their extremely focused musical efforts.

Bio

Broken Heart Messengers (formally The North Country Boys) play original Americana / Acoustic / Jamband music. Their style is classic and unpretentious, yet unique...a refreshing dose of pure talent, raw feeling, and honest emotion. Songwriter Rob Logsdon's lyrics are hauntingly personal yet undeniably universal. Their music moves your mind, your heart and your body. The Broken Heart Messengers evoke the spirit of Townes Van Zandt, Jerry Garcia, Hot Tuna, Django and Bill Monroe.
