Bio

Established in the summer of 2011, Broken Umbrella Academy focuses on beautiful vocal harmonies, and unique arrangements. Traditional in its instrumentation, Broken Umbrella Academy has progressed from an all acoustic line up to including electronic instrumentation in its arrangements. After playing live for several years and touring with the band Kabomba, Matt Schuster (vocals and guitar) decided to branch into the world of progressive folk music teaming up with Casi Moss (vocals, synthesizer, and alternate percussion) who had been playing for a couple of years in The Jenna Tellyas as a vocalist and percussionist.

Over the summer of 2011, they gathered Talley Barnes (trombone and drums) from Kabomba! and Shannon O'Shea (vocals and piano) from the Texas State University School of Music as well. After posting an add on Craigslist and a same day response, Josh Weber (cello, bass, and vocals) joined the band from Texas State music program. Broken Umbrella Academy has teamed with Jason Wilkinson, San Marcos favorite and full time percussionist for Ashleigh Stone, and is currently playing alternate percussion with the band.

Broken Umbrella Academy's acoustic lineup, has since branched out to include electric guitar, bass and synthesizer. With delicately woven poetry and dynamic arrangements, Broken Umbrella Academy moves the audience to dance and tears with beautiful melodies while exploring lyrically notions of love, freedom and death in a modern world. The audience will go from dancing the Tango to silence listening to elegies on love.

Soon after getting together, Broken Umbrella Academy recorded it's first three demo tracks: Wrecking Ball, Taste the Clouds, and Witchcraft Woman. All these tracks were immediately available for free download. It was amazing to see such a positive response for such a young group.

From the simplicity of a piano or guitar to the full impact of an orchestra, Broken Umbrella Academy knows how to push the dynamic range of a song to its peaks, while keeping it intimate. After booking it's first show in September 2011 at the Triple Crown in San Marcos, Broken Umbrella Academy has played on air at KTSW studios, going to Austin, College Station, and Houston visiting all over the state of Texas.

Broken Umbrella Academy is working on its first studio album. No release dates have been planned.
