"Making a Go-Go out of a Singing Career"

9-30-05
By Kevin Hopper

"Michael’s songwriting is succinct, sharp and superbly witty. Marked by delicious lines such as “I would risk a fake forever/for a few sweet tastes of buttercup,” or “The distance between you and me makes us look so put together/but I'd rather see your messy scars,” Michael has a way of building up a song, stopping on a dime, reversing directions and reinventing it, all within the actual song."

“I think I sounded pretty cute for a 10-year-old,” Los Angeles
singer-songwriter Brooke Michael recalled in a recent phone conversation. Michael explained that her first songs were written at the ripe ages of 8 and 9. At age 10, she actually laid these songs down on tape. “I remember thinking to myself, ‘I’m too young to be singing songs like this,’ Michael stated. “And once my mom started asking me to sing for other people, I decided to stop.” Michael didn’t start back up until age 20.
Though her prodigious tapes will likely never be heard, Michael’s
current work will suffice. Along the lines of a PJ Harvey or Tori Amos, the latter of whom she says was her “saving grace” early in her career, Michael’s songwriting is succinct, sharp and superbly witty. Marked by delicious lines such as “I would risk a fake forever/for a few sweet tastes of buttercup,” or “The distance between you and me makes us look so put together/but I'd rather see your messy scars,” Michael has a way of building up a song, stopping on a dime, reversing directions and reinventing it, all within the actual song.
“I respect (other artists) not by their records but by their live
performances,” Michael related. “My favorite moments are often mistakes.”
Michael is currently touring the Southwest, holding down irregular gigs as a performer in children’s theater and even more irregular gigs as a go-go dancer. “I’m a go-go dancer, first and foremost,” she claimed.
Michael will perform at RB Winning Coffee (111 Harvard SE) from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. tonight. Cover is free, coffee and go-go dancing isn’t.

"Pirate Cat Radio"

"Very honest. Very brutally honest. I bet you could write about bowel movements too and it would be insightful, a revelation unlike any before it. Critics would probably fall all over themselves exclaiming they didn't know what a sh*t was until you sang about yours." - Patrick Simms

"Worldfest 2005"

"If anybody is not completely moved by her music, I want you to lean over and check to see if you have a pulse."
- Billy Hulting

Bio

Brooke began writing music at the age of 8 in response to the hot six-grader living next door to her suburban home in Saint Louis, Missouri. Shortly thereafter, he moved, and the following years were spent focusing on dance, jazz, and theatre.

Cut to the turn of the millennium. She picked up music again playing bass, harmonizing, and (pole) dancing as part of two prominent San Francisco bands, performing at popular Bay Area venues and events such as the Exotic Erotic Ball at Cow Palace

Now based in Hollywood, Brooke enjoys touring the SW and NW as a solo artist, playing festivals such as ROCKRGRL and BAM, and returning to local venues like The Mint with her trio. Brooke can silence a room when she opens her mouth and stir it back up again with her poignant lyrics, tongue-in-cheek attitude, and her own personal blend of good-nature and sass.

Crowd favorites include that first song ever written about the boy next door, as well as the songs about her imperfections and the difficulty of not being Jewish...when your boyfriend is.

In other media, Brooke has performed her tunes on both KCSN’s “Tied to the Tracks” with Larry Wines and in the upcoming feature “The Inevitable Undoing of Jay Brooks”.

She can also be found sharing her theatrical flair and love for standards while singing with a jazz quartet and taking advantage of her guitar-less hands by coercing a patron or two into doing a little two-step.
