"SOTD #105 // Brothertiger: ‘Feel’"

Every so often a track completely blindsides you and takes you by surprise in the best way possible. I know absolutely nothing about Brothertiger other than the fact he is called John Jago and lives in Athens, Ohio. He announced himself to me as this mysterious entity cloaked by this absolutely luscious gem of a track.

The track in question, ‘Feel’, grabs you from the very off. Synth arrays cascade into pulsing drums and dreamy sporadic guitar strums. Building up to the chilled out and airy vocals, it is definitely reminiscent of Spain’s new golden boys of dance Delorean. Chilled out dance seems to be the ‘in thing’ at the moment, but Brothertiger ushers in a different level of quality – something that seems as genuine as it does substantial. Who knows what Brothertiger will create in future endeavours but, for now, I’m quite content to ignore all those other bands following the trend and get my fill with ‘Feel’. - Line of Best Fit

"PREMIERE: Brothertiger - Evening Glow"

John Jagos of Brothertiger just shot me his spanking new jam, Evening Glow. This track is absolutely luminous, with a soaring 80’s sound. Give me a perm and a studded blazer with shoulder pads, and this song and dare me not to show off my Molly Ringwald dance moves. - Heavy//Percussion

"Running Scared"

Heartily enjoying the codeine casiotone and burnt bedroom boogie of Athens, Ohio’s Brothertiger today. “You’re Afraid”, lifted from his currently available Vision Tunnels EP is a neat little work-out in foaming drowned dance-pop euphoria that stacks ebullient layers of sticky synth high on top of insistent drum snaps and squelchy, bass perviness in a way that brings to mind the sun-stricken house explorations of Chaz Bundick ‘s L E S S I N S.

"Brothertiger "Evening Glow (Keep Shelly In Athens Remix)""

Chillwave has become, with good reason, a term that makes some of us cringe, but this remix of Ohio-based Brothertiger (pictured above) from Grecian duo Keep Shelly In Athens shows that there are definitely redeeming qualities to the array of blissful, bedroomy sounds often associated with the genre. Not that this remix is straight-up chillwave—sure, its got a lo-fi arpeggio intro, completely reverb-washed vocals, and layers of distant pads, but about halfway through the track, something sinister takes over. A dark, distorted bassline begins to peek through the layers of reverb and delay, pulsing along at a slow chug until, just beyond the three-minute mark, the noisy bassline and steady beat completely take over. A small army of evil, fast-moving synths eventually join this sludgy procession, capping off this remix in a much different place than where it began. - XLR8R

"Brothertiger: Vision Tunnels"

John Jagos began recording under the name Brothertiger in Toledo, Ohio during the summer of 2009. He began recording electronic music in 2006 as Monoteque, an experimental project characterized by tribal beats and pulsing synthesizers.

Influenced heavily by the electronic sound of Brian Eno and M83, along with the experimental characteristics of Animal Collective, Caribou, and Yeasayer, Jagos recorded many tracks throughout the final half of 2009. After he released the Apache Feathers EP on the Modicum of Silence net-label, he soon began work on Vision Tunnels, a full-length album that aims to combine his influences together and proclaim his idea of a “summer soundtrack.”

Drawing heavily upon cassette-esque drum tracks and dream-like synths, Brothertiger combines the ethereal style of 80s new wave with the modern electro-dance sound. Like new acts like Washed Out and Toro Y Moi, Brothertiger seems to have melded them both together to capture the “carefree and woozy feelings of summer ease.” - Inverted Audio

"Stream: BROTHERTIGER, "Lovers" MP3"

Prepare yourself for chillwave. The lo-fi wash of synths by leading aritsts like Delorean, Toro Y Moi and BROTHERTIGER, recorded on the same audible level of their airy vocals, has spawned it’s own sub-genre of pop, and here we introduce it to you as if it were the second coming of Tom’s Shoes. Prefacing chillwave with such grandeur adds fuel to the fire of sensationalism, not like we’re mad, just pointing out the facts.

The Ohio bred BROTHERTIGER, based in Brooklyn joins the fray of lounge friendly sounds that transport you to a sandy shore on any coastline where there is sun and fun to be had. If you hate reading, we can just let his picture above explain “Lovers” from his Vision Tunnels EP.
