“Bruce was always an avant garde purveyor of the guitar—breaking down sonic walls with daredevil acumen—but on Heavy Mental, the sound is more guitar-centric jazz-rock fusion ala Terje Rypdal, Satch and Allan Holdsworth.... amazing fully formed fusion outing.”
- mwe3.com
“...torrents of white hot, blazing guitar shards that mix blues, rock, and fusion into one terrifying union.”
- seaoftranquility.org
...The jazz audience will find the jazz motifs unusual, and interesting. For a change of pace, give this gifted guitarist Bruce Arnold a listen, and discover some new guitar licks of an imaginative nature in GIVE 'EM SOME! Nice, solid, imaginative trio work.
- Lee Prosser, JazzReview.com
…Anyone with a taste for well-crafted music will groove with this - and agree with me when I declare it MOST HIGHLY RECOMMENDED... as well as the "PICK" of this issue for "most enjoyable music"!
— - Dick Metcalf, IMPROVIJAZZATION NATION
This music demonstrates something Schoenberg and his followers couldn’t have foreseen: that serialism has applications beyond the concert hall and may even be of use to a guitar power trio. - David R. Adler, AMG EXPERT REVIEW,
Guitar-led jazz trios rarely excite me, but Arnold manages to be technically brilliant and emotionally explosive all at once. Unlike guitar hero albums which seem to do things the other way around. Arnold imbues this set with introspective style.
— - Aiding & Abetting
…those who have even a passing acquaintance with jazz, fusion or balls-out progressive rock will love Give 'Em Some. (And, if you're simply one who likes to explore new styles, this might be a good gateway album to the frightening, dimly-lit world of experimental jazz ecstasy.) Get some.”?— - Jedd Beaudoin, Magazine F5 AltFlesh
"None of the music on this CD strikes the listener as routine, yet none of the music seems as though is is trying to sound different for difference's sake...This is a really strong CD that should win Bruce Arnold many fans once the word gets out.”? - The Sensible Sound
“... He holds the spotlight particularly well alone when he plays like a European in love with the serial music of the 1920's.” - The Boston Phoenix
“....Arnold is a remarkable guitarist with a powerful intellectual approach and a strong sense of possibility. much in the same vein as Bill Frisell. ”? - CMJ (College Music Journal)
“Jazzer Arnold mixes atmospherics and acoustics with a gentle yet complex melodic sense, pitching his tent on the common ground of Frisell, Scofield and Metheny.”?— - Guitar Player Magazine
“…an individual voice in modern music”? - Fuse Online
“Bruce Arnold is a guitarist in the straight lineage of Mick Goodrick. He plays a balanced game, sometimes rapid, not hesitating to lay down "piano" chords, equally at ease on the acoustic guitar as on the electric, always looking for the beauty of a full, round sound, and clean attacks.”? - Jazz Hot French Jazz Magazine
“Points go to Arnold for his accessible approach to twelve-tone technique.”? - Splendid E-zine On-line Review
”The recording and mixing by Systems Two of Brooklyn is nothing less than superb and show off Bruce Arnold's mastery of his instrument.”? - The Jazz Fan Attic On-line Review
“Mr. Arnold has produced a thought-provoking and stimulating piece of work….all making for close listening to the finely wrought compositions." - Jazztimes Magazine
“Frank Zappa said, "Jazz isn't dead, it just smells funny." Blue Eleven maintains that aromatic tradition.” - Modern Drummer Magazine
"...This is a really strong CD that should win Bruce Arnold many fans once the word gets out." - The Sensible Sound
“Both challenging and highly rewarding.” - Audio Magazine
“Finding an original spin in a world full of compositional cliches is no easy task, but guitarist Bruce Arnold takes an impressive shot on Blue Eleven his debut recording as a leader.” - Jazziz
